Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

E-Z Lube-Compatible Assembly for Simple Lubrication

The grease cap on this hub-and-drum assembly is specially designed to work with your Dexter E-Z Lube axle to make lubricating bearings quick and easy. Just remove the plug on the grease cap, attach a grease gun to the zerk fitting on the end of the spindle, and inject the grease. It will flow easily to both inner and outer bearings. Not only does this make lubricating the bearings easy, but it also helps to prevent corrosion of the hub. This is because you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I received within 4 days the wheel hub (with bearings and seal) together with backing plates that contained brake shoes and braking magnets. They installed perfectly on my Coleman popup trailer. Prices were reasonable. In fact the electric backing plate assemblies cost less than a previously purchased set of braking magnets. Thanks for helping me get on the road again! Keith 571732

I now have 9780+ miles on this item. I am going to replace the bearings. They still roll but one is getting a tick. About to go out. I guess I'd rather change them now as opposed to a 1000 miles from home. 492986

Seems to be very good quality. These hubs/drums fit the Dexter axle of my pop up camper perfectly. I like that they came with races, bearings and seals. The races were already properly installed. 500651

I just now completed changing out and adding the new hubs and brakes on my trailer. The only issue or difficulty was my error in ordering the correct hubs/brake drums. The return was properly handled and the new parts arrived in a timely manner. All I have left to check on is the functionality once install my brake controller in my truck. I would make additional purchases from etrailer. 582298

E trailer did a fantastic job. Before order: Technical support / help was excellent. Goal, conversion of a 1998 Floe snowmobile trailer from surge to electric brakes. Problem, due to time and corrosion, I could only supply partial part numbers, spindle diameter. etrailer did a fantastic job, researching, and getting me the correct part numbers, so I could order. Julie did a great job. She was very timely, communicated clearly and honestly, and just “kept me in the loop”. I received the order came on the projected date, complete and undamaged. Excellent. I would highly recommend etrailer, for your part needs. 439117

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Recommended Replacements for Dexter 8-257 Trailer Hubs
  • An 8-257 hub is a 5 on 4-1/2 hub for 2,000 pound axles. They fit onto a BTR spindle which uses # L44649 for both the inner and outer bearings which have an inner diameter of 1.063 inches. If any of this doesn't match what you have let me know. If you just need the idler hubs and not the hub and drum assemblies we have # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K that are for E-Z Lube spindles. Or use # AKIHUB-545-2-LF-2K for standard spindles. If your spindles have a zerk fitting on the end of them then...

  • Parts Needed to Add Electric Drum Brakes to Trailer
  • The linked article gives you a recap of what is needed to add brakes to a trailer. Since your trailer's 2200-lb axle already has brake flanges installed, adding brakes to it will require you to select left- and right-hand brake assemblies and hubs/drums to replace your idler hubs. The new hubs have to use the same inner and outer bearing as your old hubs to ensure they will fit on your existing spindles. Check the mounting bolt pattern on the flanges to ensure they match the 4-bolt pattern...

  • Complete Electric Brake Installation for 2,000 lb Trailer Axle
  • With the axle measurement and the bearing number, I can confirm that you have 2,000 lb capacity axles on your trailers. You will want to get the Brake Mounting Flange, # 4-34, to weld onto each side of each axle. With that flange in place, you will want to mount the 7 inch Electric Trailer Brake Assembly # AKEBRK-2L on the left side of the axle and the # AKEBRK-2R on the right side of the axle. These are nearly identical parts, but installing on the correct side is very important....

  • Why Dont 2,000 Lb Trailer Axles Comes with a Brake Mounting Flange
  • A 2,000 lb trailer axle like the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam part # T20BTR-7258 is not going to come equipped from the manufacturer with a brake mounting flange because of the weight of the trailer it is designed to be used on. However, most qualified welders can add the brake mounting flange part # 4-34 for a very small fee. The Dexter Trailer Axle has a 2,000 lb weight capacity, 58" spring center, and 72" hub face length. It uses a L44649 bearing on both the inner and outer seats. Once...

  • How to Determine Weight Rating of Dexter Trailer Axle
  • The Dexter axle code P29 refers to the plant where it was made, plant 29, but this does not include capacity information. If you can find the complete serial number for the axle we can contact Dexter to find out more about it, particularly its weight rating. The 7 x 1-3/4-inch hydraulic brakes we offer, all shown on the linked page, are typically intended for axles rated for 2500-lbs, such as left- and right-hand brake kit # 23-398-399 from Dexter. • Replacement Hubs for Boat Trailer with L44549 Inner and Outer Bearings
  • I'm guessing you actually have bearings # L44649 and you either mistyped or the bearing number is difficult to read. Having # L44649 as both the inner and outer is a very popular combination on 2,000 pound axles. If you need to verify to be sure this is what you have measure the inner diameter of the bearings with a digital caliper, like part # PTW80157. It should meaure 1.063 inches. I've also done some research and found that bearing L44549 has the same dimensions as # L44649 so it...

  • Yes, the Electric Trailer Brake Kit, # AKEBRK-2, the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K, and the EZ Lube Spindle, # R104BTREZ, will work together. The brake mounting flange that you will want for this setup is part # 4-34 which should be welded to the end of the axle tube just behind the spindle. • Switching from Hydraulic Coupler to Standard Coupler to Add Electric Brakes on Jayco Popup
  • Since the coupler moved back and forth to actuate the hydraulic brakes, you will want to either weld the two portions of the actuator together or bolt the two pieces together. The Kenda # AM3H460 would work for your trailer and has a load range E capacity of 1,650 lbs. at 90 psi. There really isn't an advantage going to a 5 lug hub.
