Question:
I have a 2008 Forest River Flagstaff MAC 208. Wheel hub is stamped: AL-KO 8440 MAX.DIA. 7.060 IN 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern. Hub inside depth is 2 3/4, Bearings are L44649. I tried using a set of 7 inc hubs stamped BD-54522 AXLETEK JD 1E06 S. with a 2 ¼ inside depth. This did not fit and It does not cover the brake pads I purchased from you Part Number: AKEBRK-2. I also did not have enough thread at the end of my spindle to thread the castle nut against the outer bearing to put in the cotter pin. When I tried to overtighten the spindle nut to maybe make everything seat better and gain some room, I ended up destroying the rear seal and still couldnt get enough room for the Cotter pin. It felt like the race in the inner and the outer was not spaced correctly for my axle and spindles thread positioning. Obviously, I didntt have the correct Hub. On your website, I see that you recommend for those with my type of camper the following drums- Part Number: AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K. I’m just afraid that if I order these, I’m going to run into the same issue. I think the inside depth of those drums are only slightly larger 2 7/16 inside diameter vs the 2 3/4 of my original hubs. Any recommendations or assistance so that I can get the right part and get my project and would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Kevin; I agree and would say that the # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K will give you the same result. Unfortunately, this seems to be a classic case of AL-KO parts not matching industry standards. AL-KO is no longer around, and many of their axles/spindles/hubs didn't match up with other brands.
You might be able to find some old AL-KO parts out there but we don't carry them anymore. The best solution I can offer is complete axle replacement. Since none of our 2k axles have a brake flange the universal Timbren Axle-Less # ASR2000S02 is the only option in this capacity. The spindle actually has a 3,500 lb bearing combination so you would need # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K for a hub/drum and # AKEBRK-35-SA for brakes.
Since this is a pretty bit investment it is worth looking around to see if you can find a standard 2k axle with a brake flange that matches your current axle length. If you have any additional questions feel free to reach out in the comments below.

Thanks for the help. Since the camper is only 1,100 lbs dry (we removed the propane tank, heater, and some shelving) we are comfortable with eliminating the brakes. If we transitioned to a hub without a drum for brakes what hub assembly options do we have? I can upload a picture of the spindle again if needed. The spindle length for the drum to fit on is 4" with the last 3/4'' being threaded.
