E-Z Lube-Compatible Hub for Simple Lubrication

The grease cap on this hub-and-drum assembly is specially designed to work with your Dexter E-Z Lube axle to make lubricating bearings quick and easy. Just remove the plug on the grease cap, attach a grease gun to the zerk fitting on the end of the spindle, and inject the grease. It will flow easily to both inner and outer bearings. Not only does this make lubricating the bearings easy, but it also helps to prevent corrosion of the hub. This is because you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Replacement Trailer Hub/Drum for Dexter 8-257
Hey Nolan, Dexter still makes the 8-257 hub like with the part # 8-257-5UC3-EZ that you referenced. This is a 2,000 lb axle hub/drum with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Are your brake assemblies in good shape still?

  • Can Trailer Hub and Drum # 8-257-5UC3-EZ be Used with 14 Inch Wheels on a 2K Flexride Torsion Axle
You can use hub and drum assembly # 8-257-5UC3-EZ with a 14 inch wheel. However since there will be more force with the larger wheel when it is spinning you will not get the optimum braking performance. All the hubs that have the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and fit 2,000 pound axles will all say 10 to 13 inch wheels but you can use a 14 inch. Just be aware that the braking performance will not be ideal. The brakes that are compatible with this hub and drum are # 23-47 for the left side and...

  • Why Can't 13 Inch Wheels Fit Trailer Hubs Designed for 12 Inch Wheels
The issue with using a 13 inch wheel on the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 2,000-lb E-Z Lube Axles # 8-257-5UC3-EZ, which you correctly noted is for 8 inch to 12 inch wheels, is that hubs of that size do not have a large enough flange diameter in order to to provide the necessary side-to-side support for a larger 13 inch wheel. Technically it may fit but it would not be recommended. The best option is to go with smaller 12 inch wheels and tires. For a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern,...

  • Can 7 Inch Electric Trailer Brakes Be Used on a 3500 Pound Trailer Axle
With the right size hub and drum assembly you could technically use 7 inch brakes on anything. The problem is that 7 inch brakes are rated too low for a 3500 pound axle. They are only rated up to 2500 pounds. The other issue is that the hub/drums that are associated with 7 inch brakes are not likely going to fit the spindles on a 3500 pound axle because the bearings will not be the right size. On 3500 pound axles you will use 10 x 2-1/4 inch brakes. I have included a link to all of the...

  • What Is The Smallest Wheel Size Compatible With 3500lb Axle Hub and Drum Assemblies?
I have another wheel size that will work, but there are not any hub and drum assemblies for your 3500lb axle that will work with 10" wheels. For 3500lb axles you need 10" braking assemblies # AKEBRK-35-SA and 10" hub and drum assemblies # AKHD-550-35-EZ-K. The smallest wheels that will fit with these are 13" in diameter, though all of our 13" tires have a load rating under 1750lbs each so you will need to step up to 14" wheels and tires unless you can find a suitable 13" tire. I recommend...

  • Brake Drum for a Reliable 2,700 Pound Trailer Axle
If the spindles on your Reliable 2,700 pound axle are straight (same diameter in both bearing locations) then that indicates that it uses L44649 inner and outer bearings but if the spindles are tapered (inner bearing surface diameter is larger than the outer bearing surface diameter) then it will use L68111 for the inner bearing and L44649 for the outer. If you pull a hub off and find that both bearings are L44649 you can use # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K if there are grease fittings at the ends...

  • Do Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 2,000 lb Axles Fit Same Wheel Sizes
You are correct that these two hub and drums are exactly the same but one has a standard grease cap and the other has an E-Z Lube grease cap for E-Z Lube spindles, so both will fit 12" to 15" wheels. The correct one for you will simply depend on if you have an E-Z Lube axle or not: - Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 2,000 lb E-Z Lube Axles # 8-257-5UC3-EZ - Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 2,000 lb Axles # 8-257-5UC3

  • Parts Needed to Add Electric Brakes to a Dexter Torflex #9 Axle?
Most 7 inch hub drums aren't compatible with 14 inch wheels, but the Dexter # 8-257-5UC3-EZ is an exception because it will adequately support the wheel. This hub uses the L44649 inner and outer bearing which is compatible with the spindles on your Torflex # 9 axle beam. The bearings, races, grease seal, grease cap and lug nuts are included. The hub/drums are sold individually. You'll also need a left hand brake assembly, like # 23-47 and a right hand like # 23-48. The assemblies have...
