E-Z Lube-Compatible Assembly for Simple Lubrication

The grease cap on this hub-and-drum assembly is specially designed to work with your Dexter E-Z Lube axle to make lubricating bearings quick and easy. Just remove the plug on the grease cap, attach a grease gun to the zerk fitting on the end of the spindle, and inject the grease. It will flow easily to both inner and outer bearings. Not only does this make lubricating the bearings easy, but it also helps to prevent corrosion of the hub. This is because you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for TruRyde Electric Brake Assembly Installation

Today were going to install part number TRBK10E01 from TruRyde. This is their Electric Trailer Brake for Left Hand Side. Were going to start off our install with the idler hub already removed from the trailer. This trailer previously did not have brakes so were going to add brakes to the trailer. Now if we add brakes to this trailer axle due to the fact that it has a brake flange already installed located here. The brake is very to install, Ill just make sure the mag is pointing at the bottom.

Now the studs are already built into the backing plate so all weve got to do is add lock washers and nuts. Lock washers will be 5-8 and the nuts will be part number 6-17. With our brake assembly installed on the axle now well go ahead and install the hub. Were using part number 84546UC3-EZ. First off, well apply a little bit of grease to the inside of the races and the bearings.

Then well go ahead and assemble the back bearing and seal. Then well do the same thing for the front bearing and race and apply a little bit of grease. Well go ahead and install the hub. Well add the washer and a nut and tighten it down as needed to make sure we have enough free play in the hub. Then well use a grease gun to fill up our hub.

When we fill up a hub it will also pack the bearings at the same time because the grease has to go through the bearings to get through the hub to the other side. With the hub packed, well go ahead and double check the adjustment for the hub then well go ahead and install the locking cage for the nut. Then well go ahead and install the dust cover. With our hub fully installed well go back to the backing plate and what well do is go ahead and adjust it now. Well take the adjuster and tighten up the drum until it stops moving then well back it off 10 clicks.

We should have a slight dragging on the hub when were done. Now we can go ahead and start hooking for wires for the backing plate. Now we ran the length of the wire from one side to the other and then up to the top. Were using part number 12-2-1. Now on the hub were working on well go ahead and cut the wire in half and make our connections. When we connect our wires from the backing plate to our new wire in a gray cable, it doesnt matter which wire goes to where, as long as you make sure that one of the wires in the gray cable goes ground and everyone goes to brake controller outlet. Theres a variety of ways in making a connection series, you can use wire nuts or a crimp style connector. For our connections made at the left side, well repeat the same process for the right hand side. With that that will cover the installation of part number TRBK10E01.

Fast shipping and top quality parts! Last summer I replaced all four brakes, hubs and bearing sets on my camper with these identical parts, but over-torqued one bearing and experienced an outer bearing failure on one spindle - almost lost the wheel. This unit is the same as I used previously and will replace the hub that was damaged by the bearing failure. I'm just waiting for warmer weather to install it - I won't be as aggressive on tightening the bearing this time. 116262

We have a tightening method that works pretty well for us. We tighten the nut, while turning the hub. As soon as we feel some resistance on the hub turning we stop. Then we back the nut off 1 notch on the castle nut, and secure with the pin or tang washer. Backing off that one notch allows enough breathing room for when the internals and grease warm up and expand a little. Ideally you want about .001 to .007 inches of room and backing off one notch usually falls within that range.

I ordered a complete electric brake setup for my 6x12 Haulmark trailer and Timbren springs for my Chevy Silverado 1500. Etrailer is great to work with and at this point I have no reason to buy from anyone else!! The brakes are all Dexter parts which is what I wanted. They were very easy to install on the trailer with a bit of help from the etrailer video. The brakes work great and give me a much better feeling about stopping the trailer in a emergency situation and is much easier on my truck brakes. The Timbren springs springs were easy to install after I realized that the installation is not correct for a 2004 Silverado but could be right for a 2011. The springs work very well as long as I have a fair amount of weight on the truck or pulling a trailer with at least 200lbs of tongue wt. When the truck only has 3 or 400 lbs in it which is normal with a cap and bed slide, it rides quite a bit rougher than without the Timbrens. I think air bags would have been a better decision with varying weight loads 47572

Got this with a 10 inch trailer brake. Everything was as expected. I had to buy a couple nylock nuts from Menards. They are 7/16 by 40 pitch. Which is a fine thread. 220256

Excellent quality product. I feel much more confident towing my '99 trailer with new Dexter hub and drum assemblies all around. ...and because I did the job myself, I know what to do if anything goes wrong on the road. I saved "the best" old hub and bearings as a spare just in case. I really liked the fact that you get manufacturer quality parts that are all meant to fit together, and include new lug nuts. One small issue was encountered when installing the outside bearing on one of the spindles: the bearing got stuck on the spindle as it was going in. The solution was to use high grit (3000) sand paper on the spindle right at the lip which was causing the bearing to get stuck. After sanding and thorough cleaning it was easy peasy! Hub&drum assembly: ~$55; confidence on the road: priceless. (yeah, :~$55 is not an emoticon -lol) 408601

Does not come with D washers mine were worn off to the parts store for $1.72 it comes with everything else including the big backing nut and retainer why not the washers and one of the caps were bent had to reuse old one. I also ordered the etrailer self/auto adjusting brakes the videos that are on the web site say to manually do the first adjustment. You can not do this due to a bracket in front of the star wheel. The person I ordered them from said to drive at 20mph then stop and start about 10 to 15 times. I found in the q and a on the web site to just drive and brake and they will adjust. I have a gain adjustment on my truck so where do I start? How about including the proper instructions with the brakes. You also have to reuse or buy new mounting nuts and lock washers 7/16x20. Shipping was very fast. Regards, Bob K 406696

When I decided to add brakes to my cargo trailer, I immediately went to etrailer.com. Their printed and video instructions make selecting all the proper bits and pieces, they also showed the installation procedures step-by-step. The quality of the pieces is great and everything fit together perfectly. With this installation, I now feel a lot more comfortable towing my bikes and gear to races. Braking distance is much improved in emergency stops, and it is also a lot better on the long downhills in the mountain here in the West. The only hitch in the whole installation was making the initial adjustment to the auto-adjust brakes. The video made it look a lot easier than it was, but that could also because I was working in a very small and cramped space. Overall, five stars and a hearty recommendation! 364597

Everything arrived in good shape. Haven't installed do to weather. Was missing one plastic wire fastener on one of the breaks. On rechecking the web page I see that the nuts to secure the break to the trailer were to be purchased separately, had I noticed that I would have included it with my order. No problem was able to purchase 8 nuts and washers for $2.00 at a local nut and bolt dealer. Appreciate your help with my purchase and will deal with you when I need more items for my utility trailers or camping trailer. 178223

I bought 4 of these to replace all my brake system parts. They came with the races installed and were very easy to assemble and install. Nuts come with them. BE SURE TO SAVE YOUR GREASE CAPS FOR THE ONES THAT CAME MINE ARE JUNK AND DO NOT FIT. Time will tell the quality but at this time I have told my friends to buy these for the price is right. There is not a place to Review the ETrailer service. I had to send several emails to get any help. Nothing was done about the grease caps and I was finely sent 4 plastic adjusted plugs, which I returned so they could see the poor quality for themselves. Service left me sour. order the right parts and double check to be sure and return any junk. Service rating POOR. 222618

installed brakes on my 97 Rogue boat trailer. E-Trailer had everything I needed for the job. Trailer already had the 4-hole mounting plate for the backing plate. It was all bolt on, brakes work great. I have bought quite a few items from them over the past few years, including an axle assy with brakes for another boat trailer, 2 brake controllers and also a trailer hitch for our older Lexus suv. I am very satisfied with there service and quality of there merchandise. 276795

Bought new Dexter brakes and drums to replace the original brakes on my 1995 Haulmark car trailer. The original drums and magnets were badly worn, and I wanted to replace them before going to the car cruise in Ocean City. I received an email from etrailer.com within hours of placing the order, stating that the order has shipped! The absolute best customer service I ever had. The parts arrived within days, and the packaging was superb. Thank you etrailer! 435608

Great help from Jennifer on etrailer. I chose the actual Dexter Hub and brakes. These are really top quality. I expressed concern regarding Chinese bearings as that has been a problem from other vendors. I was assured that while these were from China, they have supplied these for years with virtually no problems. Upon arrival, which was extremely fast(!!), I examined the bearings immediately. They do look and feel great and are a recognizable brand. The bearings that I had received from a competitor were pure junk! I will update later after a year or so of use. So far, I would recommend etrailer to everybody. 285616

Ordered online and etrailer responded within minutes to let me know the part I ordered was not in stock, but they had another brand of the same part available, which I agreed and with paid 3-5 shipping received package in 2 business days. Installed the same night and all went well. Thanks etrailer for excellent customer service. Will definitely look to you first for additional needs for our trailers. 258998

I am very happy with the products I purchased and the service I've received from etrailer. I jump for joy when I see the "made in america" label on products. At first I was just going to buy wheel bearings but when I saw how reasonable it was to put a set of brakes on my 5 X 8 covered trailer that I use to carry my motorcycle (Harley Bagger) I couldn't resist. Since the initial purchase I have made other purchases from etrailer with the same excellent customer service and product quality. You get what you pay for! Thank you etrailer. PS: I love the instructional videos also. 39526

I switched from idler hubs to these electronic braking hubs, I'm happy with the end result. They seem to generate a considerable amount of heat, not sure if this is due to the auto adjusting feature creating a slight drag or just from break in...I would say it has gotten better over the year I have had them installed. One negative item, 1 hub seems to be machines incorrectly for the grease cap, the only way I can keep it in is with duct tape...otherwise the cap starts working it's way out of the hub, I replaced the cap thinking it was bad, new one does the same thing. 402110

I have ordered products before and service has been great. I like that a name of contact person is given, makes and online experience much better. This past order was for drums and bearings for my boat trailer. As usual they came earlier than I expected. Everything was there. Only one complaint was that one of the drums had a considerable amount of surface rust. I was able to remove it with emery cloth and every thing else seemed OK. Perhaps the person picking parts from storage should be given better instructions as to how to inspect the product before delivery. 220505

Service was good and shipment was rite on time. One of the grease seals was bent in the shipment but I think it will work time will only tell. I was hoping that Dexter being made in America that they would use American made bearing also, they don't . The only other thing was I Thought I was getting bearing buddies but after looking back at the description I see that it wasn't , that is my mistake for not knowing better. I would have saved 18 dollars being I used my old grease caps instead. But over all I will use this company again great service. Keep up the great 451291

Product is everything you see and more. Everything fit just like it came off the axle. The numbers in the ETrailer on line catalog and the numbers on the old parts were the same. The brake backing plates and brake assemblies saved hours of frustrating work to put together. An hours work with a coffee break I was done. ETrailer has good instruction and helpful videos to go with these products. Thanks The shipping order arrived within the time ETrailer said it would. 184095

This seems like a good product and it was definitely a good price. Everything went together fine. Only problem was that I was missing the lug nuts on one of the drums. The packaging was a little suspect as well but it didn't affect this product. (Two 30 lb drums in a cardboard box playing pinball with two backing plate assemblies half way across the country) I got everything I needed and didn't spend a small fortune...good enough. 91660

Great price, fast ship. Ordered on Sat. Night and received on Tues. morning. Product is great quality. Only suggestion I would make is that they should include nuts for the backing plates. ( I ordered those as well) Anyone that is ordering these is usually replacing old rusty ones and can't reuse the old nuts. Other than that misunderstanding everything was great. Would definitely order from etrailer.com again. 29515

Received all the parts to rebuild my travel trailer brakes in a short time. Everything from lug nuts, heat shrink splices, drums, bearings, seals, brake backing plates with complete brake assemblies. All in two boxes, albeit two heavy boxes... Total rebuild time from bare axles to tires on and torqued, about 2.5-3 hours. Everything I needed was there. Thanks to Sam G. for the great customer service. 339817

Overall , no complaints about the product for the price . Nice hubs but a bit cheap on the bearings . Everything fit fine and works as it should . My only and biggest complaint is the packaging - products this heavy need to be wrapped in cardboard before boxing - the box was severely damaged in transit and I had to replace 3 of the new lug nuts . Otherwise, great service and price can't be beat . 99559

Good price and great hardware. I replaced the cheaper bearings with ones from the local auto parts store for an additional $15.00 per hub, but having good bearings to match the quality of the hubs was important. I used these with the TruRyde Electric Brake Assemblies. Went on easy and with the help of the videos on etrailer.com, I felt very confident that the job was done right. 135579

Arrived as advertised. Put these on my travel trailer in no time. Just pack the bearings and bolt them on. The lug nuts didn't work with my wheel, as it needs a deeper/longer nut to stick out far enough to get a socket on it, as the lugs are recessed in the wheel. Unlike the picture, a second dust cap without the rubber insert to get to the zerk fitting was included as well. 181783

Excellent quality and direct fit. Ordering complete backing plates made the install very easy by removing the four bolts on the back of the old plate and installing the new plate. Used a little brake cleaner on the drum and assembled the bearings; and the install was complete. E-Z lube the axle and bearing and done. Couldn't of been a better install and replacement. 26128

I have an '06 Dively car trailer and bought the 10" electric brake assembly 23-26, 23-27/Hub drum assembly 84546U3-EZ/ and Hopkins 12 volt battery. The parts came quick (as promised), they were packed well, very good quality. Everything bolted on with no problems. Mike from customer service was very helpful. I would highly recommend! I had replaced all four of the hubs on my travel trailer and one blew out on a recent trip from Orlando back to Miami Florida. They were all inspected and had the proper amount of grease before the road trip. I was disappointed since they were new and had few miles on them. It may have been defective since the other three are still in tact at this time. 276363

I know that the parts are heavy but the packing of the first order sucked. I didn't see the wires were just about severed during shipment because it looked like they were just thrown in the box. The second order when I received it, the drum was about ready to fall out of the box. However, the salesperson was helpful, and knowledge of product was great. 211847

Just recently started using "etrailer" and have found it to be the best "one stop shop" for all things trailer related. My latest order was a hub and drum kit to carry as a spare. This product is just a Dexter part. They are what was already on my trailer. The real great thing was the etrailer experience. One of the easiest orders I have ever placed as a "do it yourselfer" The service and advice was first rate and my order was shipped fast and arrived complete. I'm very glad I found etrailer.com to get these parts. 162926

As other reviewers the packing shipping was a little lacking. It probably did some bouncing around. The hub arrived with rust. I has to contact Dexter and send a picture to make sure that it was not an issue. They okayed it because it did not get into the race. Bearings seemed to be on the cheep side. Guess you get what you pay for.... 156233

Very pleased with the product. the fit was perfect. what you get for the money is amazing. the only slight drawback is that the bearings don't have any brand or part numbers on them, which leads me to think they may be of lesser quality. Again, what you get for the money is well worth it! 43885

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Recommended Trailer Wheel Bearing Grease for Dexter Axles
  • Usually when you replace parts that get lubricated, you clean all of the existing grease first before adding any new grease, just in case there is a compatibility issue. Since you are using Dexter axles and replacing components with Dexter parts, the grease will be compatible. For wheel bearing grease, use LubriMatic Disc/Drum Brake and Wheel Bearing Grease, # L11465, or # L11380. This is a polyurea-based grease that is compatible with most grease formulas of the same or similar chemical...

Since the figure you came up with doesn't match any of the 5-bolt bolt patterns I am going to need to to recheck your bolt pattern. For further info on this check out the FAQ article I attached on this. Next thing you will need to know is what spindle you have on your trailer. In order to do that...

  • How to Select New Brakes and Hubs for a Load Rite Boat Trailer
  • The 2,600 lb axles on your Load Rite boat trailer are likely de-rated 3,500 lb axles, so you should have no problem using 3,500 lb brakes and drums. The important factor to consider in this situation is that the brakes match the brake mounting flange on your axle and that the hubs/drums match your spindles.
