E-Z Lube-Compatible Assembly for Simple Lubrication

The grease cap on this hub-and-drum assembly is specially designed to work with your Dexter E-Z Lube axle to make lubricating bearings quick and easy. Just remove the plug on the grease cap, attach a grease gun to the zerk fitting on the end of the spindle, and inject the grease. It will flow easily to both inner and outer bearings. Not only does this make lubricating the bearings easy, but it also helps to prevent corrosion of the hub. This is because you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - 84546UC3-EZ Review

Today we're going to review part number 84546UC3-EZ. This is the Dexter trailer hub and drum assembly for 3,500 lb EZ lube axles with the 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now this trailer hub and drum assembly is designed to fit on axles that have electric brakes. The drum would fit over the brake assembly on the axle. It does include everything showing here, the bearings, the races which are pre-installed in the hub, the grease seal, the grease cap and the lug nuts. Now this is designed for an EX lube axle, and what the EZ lube design is, it makes lubricating the bearings very simple. Basically, when this is slid over the hub and it's tightened down, and then you put the dust cap on basically what you can do is you can actually grease your bearings without having to remove the whole hub and drum assembly.

Basically you just remove this rubber plug that's in this center cap and you would have access to the zerk fitting. It would be on the end of the spindle of the axle and then you could put your grease kit on that and grease your bearings without having to disassemble the whole hub. Again, the application on this is most 3,500 lb EZ lube axles with electric breaks, it even includes the Dexter axles. The drum dimension; this is measured by the diameter, which would be 10 inches, this is the diameter, and then the width, which would be this measurement right here is 2 1/4 inches wide. I just want to show you that basically that measurement would also be, you can see 10 inches, and then just to drop it down and if we put the measurement on it this way you can see right at 2 1/4 inches wide. Basically, that would be the measurement also of the brake assembly that would be on your trailer axle.

So if you have brakes that are 10 in by 2 1/4, that's when it's meaning that this drum would fit over it. The bolt pattern again is 5, as you can see the 5 lugs, 4 1/2 in. The wheel studs they use are 1/2 in diameter. The weight capacity is 1,750 lbs. When you use this on one side, and another one on the other side, that would get you your 3,500 lb capacity. Now, the bearings that are included; the inner bearing right here, which would be L68149 that would go, and again the pre-installed race is right in there so that inner bearing would go right in like that.

Then with your bearing installed, you put your grease seal right in there, it's a double lipped grease seal. The outer bearing, which is part number L44649, that would just drop in again the pre-installed race that's already in the hub and drum. One everything is tightened down, you can put this included center cap. Again, this is a EZ lube center cap, I just want to show you how you can remove that. There's a rubber plug right in here, so if you just pull that rubber plug right out, and with it on there you can see that you'll have access to Zerk fitting, and when you're done greasing it, you put that plug back in to protect it. Then it also comes with the five 1/2 in lug nuts that are that are used to, when you're ready to put your wheels and tires on to your hub and drum.

Then you can just use these lug nuts to tighten it down. That should do it on the review on part number 84546UC3-EZ, it's the Dexter trailer hub and drum assembly for 3,500 lb EZ lube axles. .

Excellent quality product. I feel much more confident towing my '99 trailer with new Dexter hub and drum assemblies all around. ...and because I did the job myself, I know what to do if anything goes wrong on the road. I saved "the best" old hub and bearings as a spare just in case. I really liked the fact that you get manufacturer quality parts that are all meant to fit together, and include new lug nuts. One small issue was encountered when installing the outside bearing on one of the spindles: the bearing got stuck on the spindle as it was going in. The solution was to use high grit (3000) sand paper on the spindle right at the lip which was causing the bearing to get stuck. After sanding and thorough cleaning it was easy peasy! Hub&drum assembly: ~$55; confidence on the road: priceless. (yeah, :~$55 is not an emoticon -lol) 408601

I bought 4 of these to replace all my brake system parts. They came with the races installed and were very easy to assemble and install. Nuts come with them. BE SURE TO SAVE YOUR GREASE CAPS FOR THE ONES THAT CAME MINE ARE JUNK AND DO NOT FIT. Time will tell the quality but at this time I have told my friends to buy these for the price is right. 222611

Seems to fit correctly. The old drum had an inspection hole on the face, for checking pad thickness. This drum doesn't have the inspection hole. The instructions list a washer between the castle nut and the bearing, no washer was provided, I used the old one. The drum brakes need to be beded in (really abused) before they will start to work. I took the trailer out at freeway speeds and manually applied full brakes for a "2 count" ~100 times. After a even few more miles, and two 100 mile tows, the brakes started to work better. 513080

Fast shipping and top quality parts! Last summer I replaced all four brakes, hubs and bearing sets on my camper with these identical parts, but over-torqued one bearing and experienced an outer bearing failure on one spindle - almost lost the wheel. This unit is the same as I used previously and will replace the hub that was damaged by the bearing failure. I'm just waiting for warmer weather to install it - I won't be as aggressive on tightening the bearing this time. 116262

We have a tightening method that works pretty well for us. We tighten the nut, while turning the hub. As soon as we feel some resistance on the hub turning we stop. Then we back the nut off 1 notch on the castle nut, and secure with the pin or tang washer. Backing off that one notch allows enough breathing room for when the internals and grease warm up and expand a little. Ideally you want about .001 to .007 inches of room and backing off one notch usually falls within that range.

Bought four of these Dexter Hub and Drum Assembly. First off 1 box was different from the rest and that box included all that is pictured. The other three were missing new spindle nuts and nut locking clips. The three different boxes also had grease seals that were the wrong size (you could push them in the hub by hand, no hammer needed). The three different one had lug nuts that were really tight in the socket. Tried to replace on a Monday evening and had to miss work on Tuesday to chase down new seals from a real auto parts store (don't bother with the big chain parts stores). Not real happy with this purchase. 568910

As a consumer in todays age, I look for service but also price adjusting when possible based on competition. Not the first time I ordered from Etrailer but I did find other competitors with lower pricing on the items I purchased. Comical to see that not appropriate for review is indicating anything contrary to excellent. Thus it is that pictures shown of damaged boxes may not reveal how the end product is used or affected but it is also part of the process of ordering in the future. If asking for tips only or how to give rave reviews when the overall needs to be conveyed, then why offer it as an alternative to begin with? 553105

Great Price on a new brake drum for my Casita. Included everything - bearings, seals, dust cap, retainer, axle nut and lug nuts. Did not include the washer, but that's no big deal (I have a few extra!). Arrived much faster than expected, too. Got my Casita back on the road after a bearing failure that scored the inside of the hub. Great price and good service from etrailer! I must also mention that etrailer has so much good INFORMATION and tutorials as well. There might be other online sites that have it for a penny cheaper, but they don't have the information you need to get the job done right. Thanks again etrailer! 510558

Got this with a 10 inch trailer brake. Everything was as expected. I had to buy a couple nylock nuts from Menards. They are 7/16 by 40 pitch. Which is a fine thread. 220256

I switched from idler hubs to these electronic braking hubs, I'm happy with the end result. They seem to generate a considerable amount of heat, not sure if this is due to the auto adjusting feature creating a slight drag or just from break in...I would say it has gotten better over the year I have had them installed. One negative item, 1 hub seems to be machines incorrectly for the grease cap, the only way I can keep it in is with duct tape...otherwise the cap starts working it's way out of the hub, I replaced the cap thinking it was bad, new one does the same thing. 402110

Nothing was done about the grease caps and I was finely sent 4 plastic adjusted plugs, which I returned so they could see the poor quality for themselves. Service left me sour. order the right parts and double check to be sure and return any junk. Service rating POOR. 222618

We have been going camping out West snd Southwest for five years now. Pulling 2003 Jayco 12 Sd popup behind 2006 Chevrolet Express 2500. A lot of mountains. Big Mountains. I noticed that the hydraulic brakes on the camper didn't work properly. I have tried to adjust them multiple times but it didn't help. I decided to replace them with electric brakes . It looked like etrailer had exactly what I needed. I ordered the electric brakes assembly first and then hub and drum assembly. Had to take some measures for the brake plate mounting and also get part numbers of the old bearings in the hub. All parts arrived two days after order was placed. Amazing. All the parts were there. . I am not the greatest mechanic but I was able to install them fairly quickly. Installation videos on etrailer website and YouTube were very helpful. We just went on our first camping trip this year. Only two hours drive. It seems that everything works fine I can feel that new brakes actually work. Thanks to Nicole at etrailer for helping me with this order. 528695

I purchased a used cargo trailer. We used it in October to go to Colorado on a hunt. We had a horrible time with the brakes failing. I tore it down this Spring and found there were no brakes on the front axle. I started checking around locally and could not find the parts I needed. I found etrailer online and took a chance and ordered(something Idon’t do shop online)the parts I was sure I needed. The parts arrived Tuesday and I installed them today. Everything was just as advertised and the fit was exact. Now I just need to get two new tires and wheels and the trailer will be ready for our trip to Colorado this year. Thanks E-Trailer. I am very happy with the products I purchased and the service I've received from etrailer. I jump for joy when I see the "made in america" label on products. At first I was just going to buy wheel bearings but when I saw how reasonable it was to put a set of brakes on my 5 X 8 covered trailer that I use to carry my motorcycle (Harley Bagger) I couldn't resist. Since the initial purchase I have made other purchases from etrailer with the same excellent customer service and product quality. You get what you pay for! Thank you etrailer. PS: I love the instructional videos also. 39526

I built a utility trailer with my son from a 10K weigh capacity boat trailer and wanted to finish it properly. Bearings, hubs and drums arent an area to skimp on when building a trailer but where does a person find the RIGHT replacement parts. My local hardware and big box stores offer off brand replacement parts but of what quality and I'm still guessing as to proper replacement. I called etrailer and boy am I glad I had a micrometer handy. Their customer service walked me through all measurements and I'm assured the best quality products that will stand the test of time. I am grateful for their expertise and assured of quality. Thank you 726069

etrailer came through!! UPS lost my package. etrailer immediately shipped out my order for a second time, putting a rush on it. I got it right away. Just in time for my trip. On another note. I purchased the same item at my local auto parts store knowing I had to have it before my trip. They were 40% more expensive than etrailer, for a lesser quality product. Needless to say, etrailer rushed that order...I returned the product to my local auto parts store. Thank you etrailer!! 714527

So long as a hub uses the correct bearings that match the dimensions of the spindle that is on the axle there is no worry about using two different brands of products, such as a Dexter hub on a Lippert axle. • Recommended Electric Brake Assemblies for 8-247 Dexter Hub and Drum Assembly
Based on my research, it looks like the 8-247 hub assemblies on your trailer refer to a Dexter 3,500 pound hub and drum like # 84546UC3-EZ. These hubs feature a 10 inch drum diameter and are 2-1/4 inches wide. With this in mind, the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-468-469 that you were looking at will fit these drums and work great. These are 10 inch x 2-1/4 inch electric brake assemblies that will automatically adjust for optimum performance and braking power. Both...

  • Replacement Dexter Hub for 2007 Casita Freedom Deluxe Camper Hub K08-247-94
You can select a suitable replacement hub for your Casita Freedom Deluxe camper by matching up the existing hub's bolt pattern, axle capacity and bearing set. If your original hub has a 5-on-4-1/2-inch bolt pattern, is fitted to a 3500-lb axle and uses inner bearing 68149 and outer bearing 44649 then the 10 x 2-1/4-inch Dexter part # 84546UC3-EZ is a correct replacement. My contact at Dexter confirmed hub K08-247-94 has these attributes.

  • Is Mobile 1 Synthetic Tube Grease Good for Trailer Bearings
That is a good question. I suppose it depends on how it is formulated and what its ratings are. Take a look at the FAQ article I have linked that covers everything you ever wanted to know about grease but were afraid to ask. The first part covers what the various letter ratings mean. Ideally you want something that is GC-LB rated. The FAQ also discusses choosing the best grease for an application and a compatibility chart. But when in doubt, clean it out. Meaning that if you are not...

  • Which Axle of Tandem Axle Trailer Usually has Brakes Installed on It
The rule of thumb is that you want to put the brakes on the axle that is going to see more weight. For boat trailers where the motors (most of the weight) are at the rear of the trailer you will see the rear axle with the brakes. For utility trailers where most of the weight is in front of the axles the front axle is used. I attached a couple help artilces on adding brakes to trailer axles for you to check out as well.

  • How to Select Replacement Hub with Bearings, Races and Seals
We have a wide range of trailer hubs so we can get you all set. Our hubs include bearings, races and seals. The way to select a replacement hub is to match up the bearings to the original hub. A new hub must use the same bearings as the old one in order to fit properly on your spindles. I linked our main page for trailer hubs (both idler hubs without brakes and hub/drums for drum brakes) and all you need to do is click on your inner and outer bearing part numbers to then see all hubs...

  • How to Grease an EZ Lube Spindle Hub on Trailer
Here's how to grease everything upon initial installation. First, grease your bearings and spindle by hand or with a bearing packer like part # L70025. If you are going to do it by hand, start with a gob of grease in your palm and then press the bearing into the grease with some force. Next, insert your bearings and grease seal in the hub and mount your hub on your spindle. You should slowly pump grease into the spindle. As you are pumping the grease into the spindle, occasionally...

  • Can Dexter E-Z Lube Hub and Drum Assembly Work with Lippert SuperLube Axle
As long as the SuperLube spindles on your trailer use the # L68149 inner bearing and # L44649 outer bearing, the Dexter E-Z Lube Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 84546UC3-EZ will work perfectly. The only thing different about the SuperLube spindles when compared to a standard unit is that it features a built-in zerk fitting to allow for easy lubrication without having to remove the entire hub assembly. The Dexter E-Z Lube spindles use this same design. The Dexter hub that you purchased simply...

  • Can I Replace Standard Spindles with EZ-Lube Spindles Without Replacing the Entire Axle Assembly
You can cut off the old spindle and have an EZ-Lube spindle welded on your current axle. I would recommend using the same size spindle, just the EZ-Lube version, as your trailer originally came with. That being said, new hub assemblies and bearings should be hand greased when first installed. You have to get a good coating on all the bearings first, then you can use an EZ-Lube spindle to fill up assembly and do the packing for you. You will still have to perform regular maintenance....

  • How to Pick Out Replacement Hubs for a Haulmark Low Hauler
In order to pick out the correct hub assembly for a trailer you are going to need know a few key pieces of information. The first thing you will need to know is the bolt pattern of your hubs. This is so you get a hub that is compatible with your wheels. I attached an FAQ article on determining bolt pattern for you to check out. Next thing you will need to know is what spindle you have on your trailer. In order to do that you can either get the inner and outer bearing numbers from a hub...

  • Should Trailer Brakes be Put On the Front or Rear Axle of a Tandem Axle Trailer
You would put the brakes on the forward axle of a tandem axle trailer and not the rear axle if you had to choose one axle. If you are referring to the video, that particular trailer did not have brake mounting flanges on the forward axle or it could be the one we worked on that only needed new parts on the rear axle. Either way traditionally you would put the brakes on the forward axle.

  • How to Select New Brakes and Hubs for a Load Rite Boat Trailer
The 2,600 lb axles on your Load Rite boat trailer are likely de-rated 3,500 lb axles, so you should have no problem using 3,500 lb brakes and drums. The important factor to consider in this situation is that the brakes match the brake mounting flange on your axle and that the hubs/drums match your spindles. Almost all 3,500 lb brake assemblies require a 4-bolt brake mounting flange. The bolt holes on the brake mounting flange should be 2-7/8 inches apart on center. If your brake mounting...

  • Dust Caps Keep Falling Out
I recommend measuring the hub bore of the dust cap, or grease cap, seat to make sure you have the correct dust cap for your hub. The dust cap should be a few thousandths of an inch larger than the hub bore. I have attached a diagram showing where to measure the hub bore for you. You will also want to ensure that the dust cap is fully seated in the hub bore. The cap used by the # 84546UC3-EZ hub and drum you ordered measures 1.986 inches. The replacement cap with that measurement for...

  • Trailer Hub Replacement for Dexter Hub 8-247
For an exact hub replacement that matches what you sent in a picture of you'd want the part # 84546UC3-EZ. The bearings this takes are # L44649 and # L68149. Since this is for an emergency scenario where you would be on the side of the road the hub replacement would be the way go instead of trying do a bearing swap which would require reinstalling a seal and greasing the hub. Ideal scenario is that you'd have the hub packed with grease and ready to go in case of emergency. For grease...
