Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna be taking a look at etrailer line of trailer hub and drum assemblies. These are designed to work with 3,500 lb axles and offer a 10" diameter. They're available in the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern with and without the easy lube hubs, the 5 on 4-3/4" bolt pattern with and without easy lube hubs, and the 5 on 5" bolt pattern. This hub and drum kit is designed to work with electric brakes. It's gonna give us the outer surface just like the brakes on a car. The shoes expand outward grabbing ahold of the drum, slowing it down through friction. To do that, it's gonna use a magnet.

You can see this machined surface that we've got here. It just floats along that surface until it's energized. When it's energized, it sticks, and that moves our lever arm on our brakes, expanding them out. You can see the quality in construction here. When deciding on the right hub, there's no huge differences in them. Basically, the only way you're really gonna be able to tell a good hub, like what we've got here, from a poor quality hub is just in the way it looks.

Their holes like we talked about aren't gonna be clean. The machined surfaces aren't gonna be as nice, and there's likely gonna be overcast on these outside edges. You can see they just didn't take the time to really get it perfect.Regardless of which bolt pattern choose, you're gonna have everything you need in the hub kit to get it put together. You can see we're gonna have brand new lug nuts. We won't have to worry if we've got some that are worn out or stripped.

No issues there. We've got new bearings we'll be able to put in. We're also gonna have a new seal. Once we get our inner bearing put in place, we're gonna have our new seal to go right down in there, keep everything in. That seals right around the spindle, keeps our grease from coming out of the back side there. There is a messy part of the job involved, and that's packing the bearings.

We recommend, if you're going to be doing a marine application, using a marine grade grease, or for non-marine applications, just a high temp. This is an LMX red. It's available on our website. There's several strategies to packing bearings. There are bearing packers available, which we do have on our website as well. I prefer just an old fashioned style. I'm just gonna take some grease, spread it around on my hand there. You'll see the bearing tapers. I like to go on the larger side here, and I'm gonna use that gap to scoop up grease. There it goes in there. Right in that gap. But if we continue to do that, the slight pressure we create on our hand will force that grease up between each of these rollers. I'm getting some to start to come out of there, so you can see it. You see right here on the top Got those little grease droplets poking through, that's where we'll know our bearing has been packed. Then we'll just turn it a little bit, continue doing that. We wanna see those start to come up all the way around the bearing. That means we've got our bearing full packed full of grease. Inner bearing's gonna be the same way. Just gonna take a little less grease because it's a little bit smaller. We'll place our outer bearing right inside the back of the hub. We'll make sure it seats in there properly. We've got our seal that's included with the kit. That's designed to fit down inside. It's kind of a pressure fit, so you will have to knock it in. We recommend using part number PTW83020. It's a seal, race, bearing driver. It's gonna help to give you a nice contact point on the back of that seal as you drive it in place. If you don't have one of these handy or if you didn't order one, you can use a 4x4 block. That's pretty common, too. Just place it on there and gently tap it down into place. The key to it is just to get it started squarely initially. You can see we're in all the way around there. Now we'll just drive it down so it's flush. You'll hear it come to a stopping point. You can see that's gonna go just inside that lip a little bit. That'll be perfect for us. We'll have to wait to put on the outside until we get it on our spindle.Something I like to do is take grease and pack it in the hub while we still have it off of the trailer. If you're using the easy lube style, then you're not gonna have to worry about doing this. You can fill it up with the grease gun after you have it on the trailer, but for the non-easy lube style, we wanna get this full so we don't have any room for moisture to get in there, which is what caused the rust on those spindles to start with. Nice and full of grease all the way around. We'll get it slid onto our spindle.Let's just get that slid on. You wanna try to keep it centered over the spindle so we don't have too much grease that we push out this way. Now, we'll place our outer bearing in. We want the taper to face in towards the hub. Get that seated in there. Then we need to replace the bearing that we removed. Then we can replace the washer. Some people call it a bushing. Put our nut back on. We'll run that down. You'll feel it begin to get tight. You see there's a little bit of resistance in our hub there. I like to just make sure that we get it fully compressed. Then what we'll do is back that off just a little bit. Wanna make sure that our hub spins pretty freely, but also you should be able to pull out and in on it and not feel any movement. We don't want any what they call end play. We don't want this to move in and out at all. Then we wanna take our cotter pin, slide that back through, and then just bend those back over. Just like that. We've got our dust cap that we can put in place. Depending on your axle, these may be a little bit different. For the standard style, you're just gonna have a solid dust cap. For these easy lube style, you have a little bit different cap that's gonna have a plug in it so you can access the grease cert. It's gonna be just like our seal. We wanna get it on. We wanna get it squarely in position, and then just tap it in a little bit at a time. We'll tap all the way around that edge until it seats all the way in and against our hub. Sometimes this cap is gonna deform. It's just part of it to get it seated in there properly.Just to make sure that our new brake assembly's gonna work out properly with our hub assembly, you can hook your vehicle up to your truck, whatever you're gonna be pulling with or if you have a trailer tester you can use that. You just want to move it. You can see we've got free movement now. Go ahead and turn the brakes on. And you see that's gonna lock up, stop our brakes from moving. That means we've got a good working system. This is gonna work well together. As we start applying our brakes during use, it's gonna automatically adjust to the proper tension for us.Now, you wanna head over to the other side of the trailer and get your hub installed there in the exact same way. Once we have both of our hubs installed, we can put our tire back on, and we'll secure that in place with the new provided lug nuts. When installing your lug nuts, you want the tapered side to face towards your wheel. Then we'll snug them up and torque them down. With everything working properly, that's gonna complete our installation of the etrailer self-adjusting 10" electric trailer brake kit.

Our racing season almost came to a quick halt when my Haulmark trailer had a bearing explode, taking out the hub. I found e-trailer by accident and ordered a complete hub and bearing kit. The price was amazing, the quality was amazing and to top it off the company upgraded the shipping and I had it in two days! I am impressed with not only the quality but all the information on the website to include the videos and tech tips. Because of the experience, I have decided to add new bearings and hubs all the way around. Well done!! Off to the drags that I did not think we would be attending this weekend! etrailer makes it easy. Only problem was the nuts to attach the brakes to the flange weren't included, and it's an unusual size, requiring trips to two hardware stores to find 8 nuts that matched. After that, it was a breeze. 357380

Product was spot on and everything fit as stated. No issues with the products at all. One small issue is that the shipping department put four of theses and two hubs in one box without protecting the threads. I believe the box just couldn't handle the weight. Two studs were damaged but etrailer responded quickly and replaced the damaged parts. 274989

Great product! Easy to put on and set up! Everything fit how it was supposed to! Only issue was one of the brake assemblies came apart during transit, not etrailers fault! In a few minutes had it back together 325942

I ordered these hubs/drums as a pair, they included the bearings, races, seals, lug nuts and dust caps. They had a painted coating on the outside to prevent corrosion and they bolted right up. I would recommend. 279380

I selected 3-5 day shipping and got in in 2. Drums are on my trailer and working well. It took me a long time to figure out that my drums needed to be replaced as I had one drum that locked up and others didn't activate. Turns out the surface on drum for magnet was grooved so couldn't break well. Make sure you check that if you are having trouble with your breaks. 391554

Normally I buy Dexter parts for my trailer which have always been of high quality. This product was disappointing to say the least. The mounting studs on the backing plate were not seated and the bearings appear to be of poor quality. Really wish I had invested more and stuck with Dexter. 371075

I ordered a brake assembly and hub assembly. They arrived earlier than expected but there was a big hole worn in the side of the box. All parts were present and in good condition. Installation was no problem. I will shop etrailer again. 539108

Susan was very patient on the phone and made sure I ordered exactly what I needed. She actually waited patiently while I pounded out the bearings to get the serial numbers. She made sure the new bearing and brakes fit the before I ordered them. I installed the drum brakes easily and have since driven about 2000 miles on the trailer without issue. I would absolutely order from etrailer again. Thank you again, EXCELLENT customer service! 529313

Ask the Experts about this etrailer Trailer Hubs and Drums
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Replacement Hub/Drum Assembly Needed for a Dexter 8-147 Assembly
  • Your drum/hub that is the Dexter 8-147 part number should have an inner bearing # LM48548, an outer bearing # L44649, and a grease seal # 58846. If this is the case then we do have some hub/drum assemblies that would work great for your application. The hub/drum assembly that I recommend using is the part # AKHD-545-35-K which is compatible with 3,500 lb axles and has the bearings and seal that fit your spindle. It fits 10" brake assemblies so you will want to verify that on your end. This...

  • Changing from 10 x 1-3/4
  • I do have an option for you but we no longer carry 10 x 1-3/4" brake assemblies. I recommend upgrading to 10 x 2-1/4" brakes as this is the more common size for 3,500 lb axles and will provide greater stopping power. For a set of 10 x 2-1/4" brakes, I recommend taking a look at the Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-35-SA. These brakes are self-adjusting and use a 4 bolt brake mounting flange which is what should be equipped on your AL-KO axles. If you have a different brake mounting...

  • Replacement Hubs and Brake Assemblies for Dexter Mobile Home Axle and 8-147 Hubs
  • Based on the information you gave, although I can't help with the axle (other than to state it is a 3,500 lbs axle). Dexter mobile home axles were designed for one time use and weren't really documented for replacement parts, but because you have the hub number I can still give you the info you need for new drums and brakes. Your current Dexter hub 8-147 I was able to look up and it has an inner bearing # LM48548, an outer bearing # L44649, and a grease seal # 58846. Based on this information...

  • Parts Needed to Add Brakes to a Tandem 3,500 lb Axle Trailer to Tow with a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • It sounds like you currently have a wheel hub that has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern (taken from the far end of one bolt to the center of one directly across from it) and that you already have a brake mounting flange on two 3,500 lb axles. If this is the case then I recommend using the electric brake kit # AKEBRK-35-SA along with the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-K. Electric brakes are the easiest to install and maintain so these will work out great for you. Just make sure...

  • Adding Electric Drum Brakes to Carry-On Trailer
  • Based on my research, it looks like your Carry-On 6X8GW2KPT Trailer has a 3,500 pound axle. If this is correct, you will need hub-and-drum and brake assemblies that are compatible with this axle. To upgrade your idler hubs to hub-and-drum assemblies, you will also need to find assemblies that are compatible with the trailer spindle. The numbers stamped into your trailer's existing bearings and seals will help you determine this. If you cannot find the numbers, you can also measure the...

  • How To Measure A Trailer Spindle To Find Replacement Hubs And Bearings
  • To make sure you find the right replacement hubs you can do a couple of things. First check out the bearing and see if you can find the numbers for the bearings either etched or stamped on the side of the bearing. If you can not find the numbers you will need to measure the spindle. I have attached a drawing that shows where you need to measure the spindle to find the right replacements. The drawing also shows where to measure for a seal as well. You will also need to measure the inside...

  • Replacement Drum Assemblies for AL-KO 8490 Hubs
  • According to my research, AL-KO 8490 references an AL-KO hub for 3,500 lb axles with a 10 x 2-1/4" drum and a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. For a drum assembly that will work with these hubs I recommend taking a look at the Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-35-SA for self-adjust or part # AKEBRK-35 for manual adjust. If you would also like to replace the hub then as long as your existing AL-KO hub uses an L68149 inner bearing and an L44649 outer bearing, the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly...
