E-Z Lube-Compatible Assembly for Simple Lubrication

The grease cap on this hub is specially designed to work with your Dexter E-Z Lube axle to make lubricating bearings quick and easy. Just remove the plug on the grease cap, attach a grease gun to the zerk fitting on the end of the spindle, and inject the grease. It will flow easily to both inner and outer bearings. Not only does this make lubricating the bearings easy, but it also helps to prevent corrosion of the hub. This is because you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub - AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the trailer idler hub assembly for 2,000 pound E-Z Lube axles with the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now this trailer hub assembly is designed to fit E-Z Lube idler axles. Now the E-Z Lube axles are the ones that will have a grease Zerk fitting on the end of the spindle. Allows you to grease the bearings without having to remove the whole complete hub assembly. Does come with this E-Z Lube compatible grease cap that makes lubricating your bearings very fast and easy. When this is installed on your hub, all you need to do is just remove this rubber plug in the middle.

That'll give you access to that Zerk fitting on the E-Z Lube spindle. Take your grease gun, put it on to the spindle, and then pump your grease into the bearings. Just by doing that, you don't have to disassemble the hub to gain access to grease your bearings. Now this part will include everything shown here on the table. It includes the idler hub assembly and it includes the bearing races. They are pre-installed from ...

When you receive this, you'll get the bearing races pre-installed. As you can see right here, here's your outer bearing race installed. Right here is your inner bearing race all installed. Comes with both the inner and outer bearing. Comes with the grease seal, the zinc-plated E-Z Lube grease cap with the rubber plug, and then the 5 1/2 inch lug nuts. This hub is a sturdy iron construction, finished with a nice zinc-enriched paint finish.

It is certified by U.S. SAE standards and CSA, which are the Canadian standards. The application for this is a 2,000 pound E-Z Lube trailer axles with the BT8 spindles. Now this is compatible with axles from most manufacturers, including Dexter, Lippert, and AL-KO. The hub flange diameter, which is measured edge-to-edge right here on the hub, this diameter is 6-1/2 inches, so because of that measurement, it does usually use ...

It works with the 13 inch to 15 inch size wheels. The bolt pattern on this is a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The wheel stud size is 1/2 inch by 20. The weight capacity on this is 1,000 pounds per hub, so when this is matched with a hub on the other side of the axle, it'll meet your 2,000 pound maximum axle rating. These parts, I'm going to show you how they install in the hub here. Basically, on this part number, they actually use the same bearing for both inner and outer. It's the same part number. We'll start with the inner bearing. It's part number L44649, has an inside diameter right here of 1.063. You go to the inner bearing race and your bearing will fit right in there. To hold that in, you'd use the grease seal. This has an overall diameter of 1.987. That would be put right there and then tapped into place to hold everything there. The outer bearing, which on this part number, again, is going to be the same, L44649 with the 1.063 inner diameter, goes in the outer bearing race. Then, again, to hold that in is your zinc-plated E-Z Lube grease cap that has the rubber plug in it. The flange diameter on this cap is going to be 1.99 inches. That would just tap in just like that. As we mentioned earlier, with this plug installed in there inaudible 00:02:59 pop that rubber plug out. That gives you access to that E-Z Lube fitting. For this video, I'm showing you where all the parts go in the hub, but I do want to make sure that you do know that when you do install this on your axle, that you do want to make sure both bearings are fully packed with grease before installing it on your axle. Then the last thing it comes with is the 5 1/2 inch by 20 size lug nuts. Lug nuts are used to hold your wheel and tire assembly to your hub. When you put your wheel up on the studs, go ahead and put your lugs on all there and then tighten it down and torque it to the correct specs for your application. That should do it for the review of the trailer idler hub assembly for 2,000 pound E-Z Lube axles with the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

Received parts yesterday and everything arrived in excellent condition. Without etrailer's helpful guides it would have taken a lot longer to identify the correct Hub's and bearing's that I needed for my jet ski trailer. I always go to etrailer for my trailer needs!!!! I have a jet ski trailer, boat trailer, and 36.5 foot 5th wheel camper. So I'm always needing parts!!! 682919

We pack the bearings in these hubs and carry them along for spare, ready to install on the trailer if bearing goes bad while on the road. We use these trailers for trips from northern Indiana to south florida, than to Iowa. Then back to Indiana. So its a lot faster to just change the whole hub when you have trouble. 338771

Ask the Experts about this etrailer Trailer Hubs and Drums

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Recommended Replacements for Dexter 8-257 Trailer Hubs
  • An 8-257 hub is a 5 on 4-1/2 hub for 2,000 pound axles. They fit onto a BTR spindle which uses # L44649 for both the inner and outer bearings which have an inner diameter of 1.063 inches. If any of this doesn't match what you have let me know. If you just need the idler hubs and not the hub and drum assemblies we have # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K that are for E-Z Lube spindles. Or use # AKIHUB-545-2-LF-2K for standard spindles. If your spindles have a zerk fitting on the end of them then...

  • Recommended Hubs for Small Trailer with 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern
  • Since you provided the bolt pattern and bearing numbers we won't be needing the pictures. The hub assembly I suggest is the idler hubs # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K. These are rated for 2,000 pounds and include the bearings, races, seal, grease cap, and lug nuts. For the same kit for standard spindles instead of the E-Z Lube use # AKIHUB-545-2-LF-2K.

  • What would be the Best Option for an Axle to Install on a Small Trailer Frame
  • I have a solution for you. However, with the 41 inch frame width, finding a one piece straight axle to fit this measurement will be difficult. I recommend the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System, # ASR400S02. The Timbren axle-less system will mount to the frame of your trailer and will give you additional clearance under the center of your trailer. This system will replace the need for the leaf spring suspension. The Timbren system uses Aeon rubber springs that are will provide...

  • Upgrading Tire Size on a Harbor Freight Trailer
  • I do have a solution for you, but we do not recommend using vehicle tires on a trailer. Trailer tires are built with stronger sidewalls to help resist the load that is put on them, while vehicle tires are made for a more smooth ride. Also, we do not carry spacers that are intended to make your tire and wheel stick out so that it can clear your trailer frame. To find out if you can upgrade your tires and wheels with your current setup, you can take the outer diameter and section width...

  • Compatibility of 7 Inch Brake Hub # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K and 13 Inch Wheels
  • The Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K is only rated for use with 8 inch through 12 inch wheels. This is the case for all the 7 inch drum brakes. The wheel size will change the braking ability of the trailer hub. The idler hubs are often not limited to 12 inch wheels because they don't utilize brakes. For instance, the # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K is rated for wheels up to 15 inches. I recommend either using a 12 inch wheel or upgrading your axle for the 13 inch wheel compatibilit...

  • Will the 2K Timbren Axle-Less System A20RS545 Work with 15 Inch wheels
  • I do have what you need but the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System part # A20RS545 will only work with wheels up to 13" diameter because the hubs do not have enough surface area to support this larger size wheel. Instead, you would want to use the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System part # ASR2000S01 with the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly part # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K as this would provide you with a hub size that is compatible with the larger 15" wheels. It uses the same spindle...
