I placed my very first etrailer order on July 5th for the following items - Dexter Trailer Brake Kit (Code 23-468-469), Easy Grease Trailer Hubs x2 (Code AKHD-545-35-EZ-K) and Redarc Tow-Pro Elite (Code RED63RR). The shipment was received on July 7th but was missing right hand (RH) brake assembly that is part of the Dexter Trailer Brake Kit. The one brake assembly I received, and the Tow-Pro Elite were packed in an e-trailer box. The 2 Hubs were shipped in their product box only. E-trailer provides a nice log of the actions taking place on the order. My order went through 3 individuals (processed by, gathered by, packed by) who ALL missed my order being complete. One of the hubs had broken through the box and was taped back together. At the time, I could not tell if this happened in shipping or not. I found out later that this box had indeed been shipped this way. When I broke the box down to recycle, I noticed white writing on the inside of the box that wrapped up the sided (around the hole that was taped in the box). So, either the manufacturer or e-trailer shipped the box in this fashion. Pictures are attached to show this. I contacted e-trailer support via phone when I arrived home on July 7th and found the items. It was not an issue to get a RH brake assembly on its way to me. The e-trailer rep was not overall concerned with getting me a replacement for the hub. They stated something along the lines of "These are heavy and built to take a beating, let me know if there is an actual problem with it." I received shipping confirmation on July 7th that the RH assembly had been shipped. It wasn't until 7/13 that the RH assembly arrived. I received the first request for a review on July 7th about my order and experience to which I replied on July 10th. I had let them know I had some issues and was waiting for the rest of my missing order to arrive. I also mentioned that both the RH (Code 23-469) and LH (Code 23-468) assemblies that make up my kit were about ~$60 cheaper than buying the kit. Seeing as I received the individual items anyway and not the kit (pics of the e-trailer item sticker to show this) I asked if they could adjust the price for me (both of which are still cheaper today, July 19th). I received an initial response of "I'm sorry, but we would be unable to price match as we are unable to confirm the price of the items when the order was placed." and second response of "I'm sorry, but our prices can change every day due to are algorithm. We are unable to price match after an order has shipped as a result.". I cannot recommend etrailer and this will likely be not only my first, but last purchase with them as well. I thought I was choosing a reputable company but would have been better purchasing my products from Amazon where they are cheaper. Not even pricing matching your own products is another thing (due to their error of sending individual items). The thought of shipping out an already potentially damaged product and a shipping container that is compromised is appalling too. Is it so much trouble to ship the products in an actual shipping box rather than a product box that is not rated for shipment?

After install of brakes could not get them to work properly. Coils ohm out to 3.2. Ground is good. Tried on 3 different trucks. Any suggestions?

Comments
I wanted to assist you with the brakes and I wanted to ask a few questions. Can you tell me in more detail how they are not working for you. Have you had the opportunity to bed the brakes, i.e. to break them in?
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 02/10/2023
Yes I have bedded the brakes. I can adjust brakes to the point they are to tight and they will still not clamp down hard enough.
-- comment by: Shelby - 02/10/2023
I just want to be clear so that I understand - do you mean that they are not braking hard enough or are they not locking up?
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 02/10/2023
There are only a few other ideas that I would have to for you to test. It could be that the ground is not strong enough and it is suggested to check the ground wire that is attached to the trailer frame. Making sure that the wire is as close to the magnet at possible and that the ground wire attached to the trailer tongue is on a suitable clean surface. If this does not help I would check the magnets again. I have attached a FAQ below on how we have tested the brake magnets. You can also readjust the brakes so that you get a slight drag when turning by hand versus being so tight that they are hard to turn.
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 02/10/2023
I have a separate white wire for a ground from truck. I did check ohms of each magnet and both read 3.2. I have not read amp draw of each on a battery since ohm reading was good. I have tried this trailer on 3 different trucks set up this way.

Boxes arrived with holes in them parts bent or missing. BOXES need to be reinforced or double packaged. Why would a LOWES plaster bag be in one of the boxes? Do want to thank you for replacing damaged or missing parts. One box from still not accounted for.

Comments
I am very sorry that the package arrived this way. I am not sure about about the Lowes bag however I will send this information to our shipping department. I will also have our customer service team reach out to you.

I was replacing the 20 year old electric brakes on my utility trailer and choose the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust electric trailer brake kit. The non Dexter brand cost less but after adding shipping and adding the nut kit they were the same as the Dexter brakes with free shipping and the nuts were included with the Dexter kit. This was one the easiest projects I have ever done. I had recently replaced the bearings so getting the brake drum off was a breeze. I used butt connectors with the heat shrink insulation wot connect the power to the bakes. I had thought this would be a two day project but did both sides in about 3 hours. And best of all, the new brakes function as they should, it was like I did not have electric brakes before. Again an easy and well worth it project.

Comments
It has been a year since I installed the Nev-R-Adjust electric trailer brakes and they are still doing a great job. In October Hurricane Michael struck and I have used the utility trailer more than I ever anticipated and have had zero problems from the brakes. Moving equipment & debris became a daily task.

The Dexter brakes and hubs are great - a bit pricey but far and above the no-name brands. There was one problem with the order (well 2 actually), they only shipped one brake in the package so there go my plans for installing the new hubs and brakes this weekend. Mistakes happen so I'm not real upset about it. I'll update this review when I see how customer service handles this.

The second problem is the packaging. Nothing was damaged, which surprises me, but the two Drums and one brake were in their own boxes inside a bigger (huge) box with no peanuts or anything to keep them from flopping around. I lifted the box up on end so I could pick it up to carry it back to my work shed. When I did, it almost rolled out of my hands because the contents shifted so violently. When I got back there and opened the big box, the three smaller boxes were piled atop each other at one end.

FORTUNATLEY, they made it through the carrier's system, of which I am very familiar since I worked there for years. I was shocked they did. Better care in packing into larger boxes would go a long way.

Five stars for the products. Three (average) for the care in shipping the order.

I am restoring a 1972 Argosy that has been sitting in a field for 30 years. It was the first year Airstream made the Argosy, so it is extremely rare. The first task is to get it moveable and replacing the old non-adjustable electric brakes with the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brakes at this time makes sense. I have pulled the wheel hubs, cleaned and repacked the bearings, put in new grease seals and almost ready to put the new wheels and tires on. etrailer website and staff have been extremely helpful in finding what I need and shipping it to me fast. Looking forward to many more orders as this restoration moves forward.

by:

Couple of years later, excellent! I pulled the drums last month and still had shoe left after probably 30K miles of travel. several trips thru the smokey mountains, and back and forth from N. Carolina to central OK. We try and stay off of the interstate so lots of passing thru small towns with the attendant stops.

by:

Brake kits installed with no problem. After initial adjustment per the instructions, brakes were performing well. Thanks for fast shipping!

Comments
Still working great! Self adjustment feature is awesome.

Another seamless project done. Don't know how many orders I made with etrailer.com but it was a lot. All of the trailer lights, Breaks, 7 pin, and all of the camper light, Hold downs ect are from etrailer. Fast shipping very few returns and the camper rear window was already put together which took a while to carefully take apart. Got it apart and installed it no problem. All in all it was a good place to get stuff for the build.

Number one quality parts. Had to replace the axle due to lack of lubrication of the wheel bearings. Love the concept and ease of keeping the wheel bearings supplied with fresh grease on the e-z lube axles.

Comments
Working great. Exactly the axle I needed.

Replaced obsolete Warner brakes with the Dexter brake kit. Installation was incredibly easy after watching the video

by:

Fit is perfect. Chose to replace brakes with assemblies because trailer is 23 yrs old. Good call. The pain was getting old assemblies off. Had to cut fasteners with 4/12" grinder. New Assembly fits bolt pattern. Torqued backing bolts, repacked bearings, installed new grease seals (note buy separate) and took out for break in drive. Brakes work great. I've used assemblies in past and they are the way t go in my opinion.

Comments
Trailer Brakes still working great. No issues with brakes a few flat tires, but coming to stop no problem. LOL

Installed these before taking a long trip up into the Colorado mountains. Amazing upgrade from my original brakes that kept locking up on me. Never having to manually adjust them is a big plus. Takes the guesswork out the picture.

by:

Good Quality, easy to install. The break in was a bit challenging. I had to move the brake controller setting all the way to the top to get this set to engage. One side engages more than the other unfortunately. I have my brake controller set to a mid level after break-in. I recommend that you add the recommended wire size to use with these components in the instructions. My initial setup was just to small of a wire gauge.

by:

Everything fit just right wired up just fine takes a little while to break these things in but once they start biting they work really nice I did a little bit more than just replace the brakes I did the shocks, springs and equalizer then re-painted everything underneath too, pretty much rebuilt the entire suspension sure makes a difference. I'm including some before and after pictures here they're probably out of order but them's the berries folks !

by:

Original order took 30 days to complete. There was an issue with another item in the order which delayed my install. When I went to install these brakes after finally receiving the correct parts on the rest of my order, the left brake was defective. (Almost cut my hand on it) It has now been 2 weeks since I informed them of the defect. The replacement part still has not shipped. I placed a separate order on the very same day, those items came this week.

Very helpful customer service. Installation was smooth and so are the brakes after about 100 mile wear in.

Comments
Not a lot of miles yet, but self adjusting is the way to go. This was a a little more expensive than just replacing the shoes, but the installation was quick and now have self adjusting.

by:

So far these self adjusting brakes are working perfectly. The trailer is on the road ever day and breaks are worry free . I would definitely spend the few extra dollars for this option.

by:

I purchased 2 sets of these for my horse trailer. They were almost too pretty to install. Top quality all new and a super easy install. Be sure to get new wheel bearings and drums and your brakes will be set for years to come! They work great!

by:

Perfect upgrade replacement for my original cheap Chinese brake assemblies that came on my travel trailer. Although I didn't replace them myself, the installer said there is no comparison in quality.

by:

Thank you for the great service. Ordered parts with one day shipping.
Factory branded Dexter replacement parts, not NO name knockoffs

by:

These brake assemblies were an exact fit for my Dexter Axle. The kit came with everything needed to change it out, including the bolts to attach the brake backing plate. Very straightforward instructions. Fast shipping. I would recommend E-Trailer for any parts.

Comments
I recently removed the brake drums to check the brake pad wear and found the pads to be wearing evenly and no adjustment was needed. Self adjusting brakes are the way to go as an easy upgrade to the brake system.
David - 05/15/2019

by:

Very smooth change over, brake kit worked as described. No problems adjusting, spending just a few minutes driving forward and applying trailer brakes. Attached photo of axle type and information, critical when purchasing correct replacement parts.

by:

I am very pleased with the service, the shipping was great, I buy a lot of products on line and E trailer is by far the best! My Dexter brakes and drum assembly were very well packed and arrived in less time then I was expecting! Thank you for the great service!

Quick shipping, brake assembly was perfect replacement.

  • Should I Use 10 or 12 Inch Brakes on a Trailer with 3,500 Pound Axles and 16 Inch Rims

Larger 12 inch brakes won't fit your hubs. It is more common to see 15 inch rims on a 3,500 pound axle but a long as your bolt pattern matches and you have the clearance 16 inch rims can work. But even the larger rims use the same size brakes because they're using the same size hubs.

Trailer brakes are not designed to lock up contrary to many comments. If they were not under load and just free spinning on a jack then they should lock up, but when weight is on them and they are rolling you don't want trailer wheels to lock up. If they did, you would lose traction and your trailer would be out of control. You want a consistent braking pressure that doesn't lock but rather brings the trailer to a stop without locking because this controls the braking and keeps the traction...
