Question:
Purchased a used boat and trailer. Driver side wheel locks up after about 1 reduction going forward or reverse. After a lot of searching I found engraved on the axel it is a Dexter Axel 2,500 lb cap. Initial exam it has hydralic brakes, 7 inch drum with 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. Noticed the passenger side drum is missing a section of its metal where the brake shoes would rub. I found the Dexter 7 inch hydralic brake assembly for 2500 ld axel but all the drum and hub assemblies I can find say for 2000 lb axel inch My question is... Does the hub and drum assembly have to be specific to the 2500 lb axel or is the 2000 lb one work for my 2500 lb axel

Hi Doug,
Good question, and the weight listed for the hub and drum is just for the typical axle rating it fits, so it does not have to be a match. What does have to be a match is the bearing numbers; for example the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 2K Axles # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K use inner and outer bearing L44649 with a 1.063" inner diameter, so you'd need that to match.
There isn't a hub and drum for a 2,500 lb axle but there is the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,500-lb Axles # DX22XR which uses inner bearing LM67048 (1.25" inner diameter) and outer bearing LM11949 (0.75" inner diameter). So I recommend measuring the spindle where the bearings ride with a digital caliper like in the diagram I added to ensure you get the right one.
I've added a link below to our selection of hubs for you as well.

Hey Doug, how did things go after you measured the spindle for your Dexter axle? Were you able to find a hub and drum that matched your bearing sizes? Your update could make it easier for others working on similar boat trailers.
