Parts Needed To Add Electric Drum Brakes To 1994 Jayco Pop-Up

Updated 07/15/2025 | Published 07/13/2025

Question:

I have a Dexter Torflex 2400lb axle. It has 7in drums. The hydraulic surge brakes are no good. I am trying to decide whether to replace the brakes and the tongue also bad to restore the trailer to factory or to replace with electronic brakes. What are the products I would need for both options? This is on a 1994 Jayco Pop-up.

Hey Dan, thanks for reaching out. We do have the 7" electric brakes and drums. Electric brakes are typically less expensive and easier to service than disc brakes. Both could work but for a pop-up camper electric drum brakes would do fine and be relatively easy to set up.

As I said we do have the 7" brakes and drums but there are a few different spindle sizes so I will need you to confirm either your spindle diameter or bearing numbers. Also confirm the hub bolt pattern you want. The hubs are the following:

- Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 2K Axles - 7" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 - L44643 - Pre-Greased # AKHD-545-2-1K (L44643 1" inner diameter bearings)

- Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 2K Axles - 7" - 5 on 4-1/2 - L44649 - Pre-Greased # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K (L44649 1.063" inner diameter bearings)

We also have these in 4 lug if that is what you need. The disc brake options are more limited, so if you can confirm that bearing/spindle info I can see if there is anything available.

The Dexter Electric Trailer Brakes # 23-47-48 go with the hubs I mentioned.

You will need to wire these to a 7-way plug. For that I recommend using part # e99011 which comes with a 7-way and junction box. You will need to add a breakaway like part # 20400. Also, you will need an electric brake controller in your tow vehicle. The Tekonsha P3 # 90195 is what I recommend for that.

If your tow vehicle is not already equipped with a 7-way plug, let me know your year, make and model and I can get you the parts needed for that.

I have included a link to our guide on installing electric drum brakes. That will be a great starting point for your project.

I have the 4 lug x 4” bolt pattern. The hub is the easy grease hub.

@DanS Do you know what bearing size you need? Is it the 1" or the 1-1/16" spindle? Assuming it is a straight spindle but please confirm.

@JesseM I didn’t measure it when I had it apart. But the part the bearings ride on is straight and not tapered. I won’t be able to take it back apart for a little while.

@DanS Ok yes that is the last piece of info I would need to be sure you are getting the right thing. The 1-1/16" is a bit more common since your axle is rated for more than 2K but both sizes were used back then
