Can Brakes be Used with 2k Timbren Axle Less Kit

Updated 09/03/2025 | Published 08/10/2025

Question:

I am looking to upgrade my el cheapo harbor freight trailer with these electric breaks. The max I pull is my 21 Honda Goldwing Goldwing which is only ~940lbs,and my unigo trailer is 70lbs. My trailer weighs 357lbs as equipped. My total weight is only in the 1500lbs range. Id also like to add axle-less suspension A20RS545 due my frame dimensions and tow vehicle limits. I dont want to go to the 3500lbs axle. Never going anywhere where near that weight my ride would be even worse. Is there a way to use theses breaks on the axle-less suspension A20RS545. Or something in that 1800- 2200lbs range that breaks can be added using a 5 on 4 1/2 lug pattern with minimal welding?

Hey Devin, there is a way to use the Timbren Axle Less kit you mentioned and have brakes but you would want the kit part # ASR2000S01 that doesn't come with hubs so that you could use the hub/drum part # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K and the brake assemblies you referenced AKEBRK-2.

Hey Devin, did you end up using the Timbren Axle-Less kit with the brakes you mentioned? I’m curious to know how it worked out for your trailer setup. Your experience could really help others looking to upgrade their trailers in a similar way.

@JamesonC Not yet. I had other projects that jumped ahead in line and that became a winter project. I live in Arizona and its just to hot for non-essential projects in the summer. I will be moving foward here soon. A follow up question. To add that suspension I will need to cut the metal out that is currently used for the leaf springs. How much strength will be added by the addition of the suspension mounting frame. I do not want to raise up the trailer at all. With the same travel I'd actually be happy to lower the the trailer and inch or 2. I made a sleeve/ spacer to raise the toung hight of my ball. It's definitely strong enough for my weight limits, but if I could get rid of it that would make me very happy as well as loading and unloading much easier.

@Devin In that capacity of Timbren Axle Less we don't have any 2 inch drop options but we do have a 4 inch drop witih the part # ASR2KHDS05 if that would be something you'd be interested in. Cutting off the old suspension hangers would not affect the strength of anything either.
