Manual-Adjust Brake

With repeated use of this brake assembly, the brake shoes may move out of alignment, causing less efficient braking performance. To keep the brake shoes aligned and the brake assembly performing correctly, you should perform routine maintenance.

This brake assembly should be adjusted after installation and then as needed for the life of the brake. To adjust the brake, use a brake adjustment screw tool (sold separately) to turn the adjustment gear on the inside of the assembly. Continue to turn the gear until the drum surrounding the brake catches on the brake pads enough so that the hub can no longer be turned easily by hand. Then reverse the gear by about 10 clicks. A properly adjusted brake should drag slightly on the brake drum.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This brake assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This brake assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This brake has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on this brake assembly is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Brakes AKEBRK-2R Review

Today we're going to take a look at the 7 inch right hand electric brake assembly for 2,000 pound axle. Now electric breaks are a lot easier to install, they offer more user control than hydraulic breaks. Electric breaks will only require an electric break controller to operate them. We do sell the brake controller separately on our website. There is no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary with electric brakes. Now this one, the brake shoes are lined with a nice auto grade friction material.

If yo notice this friction material is fully bonded. It is not riveted to the shoes, gives it a lot longer life more braking torque, also on this lining, they do taper the edges and then they do a circular grinding of the material and the reason they do this is to prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lock up. Now these are manual adjustment breaks, so there is a periodic manual adjustment that is required. When you go to adjust them, what you do is you go to the back and pop this adjuster plug out right here at the bottom and there'll be a hole there that you can get your tool or screwdriver in and you can turn the star wheel at the bottom to adjust the brakes in or out. The nice thing on this, they use a fine tooth break adjustment gear on this so it allows for more precise setting or adjustment. When you do install these there is no break-in period needed. Now the baking plate that the brakes are attached to has a nice heat coating to it to help resist wear and corrosion.

As I mentioned that adjuster hole this one actually also comes with the adjuster plug that you put in that hole when you're done adjusting it. Put that rubber plug back in and that nice because it keeps the dirt form getting into your break assembly and causing problems. If you noticed the bolts, the mounting bolts are included. This is designed to fit a four bolt mounting flange. The nuts and the lock washer that are used to hold this on to the break mounting flange, we do sell those separately on our website and they are usually listed on this product page as a related product. Now this brake assembly is certified for QAI which is Quality Assurance International and CSA which is the Canadian Standards Association.

Now this is a seven by one and a quarter break assembly, when we say that size, basically what we're saying, seven inches is the diameter if we measure outside to outside. If we take a ruler and put it on there, edge to edge you can see as seven inches. By one and a quarter means the width of the brake pad, so if you put that on there you can see one and a quarter, so seven by one and a quarter. This is the right hand or passenger side break assembly. The way you can tell that, now this one, most of them will come with a sticker that says right hand side, but if that sticker wasn't there the easiest way to tell what side this is for is you look at the size of the shoe, or the lining on the shoes. If you look at this one, it's a smaller lining, this one's a lot larger lining.

The shoe with the smaller will always face towards the front of the trailer so if that's the case this would be the front of the trailer, the smaller shoe faces that way. That would make this the right hand side or passenger side assembly. That's the easiest way to tell what side it goes on, Now this is designed for an axle rating of 2,000 pounds. This does use seven inch drums and these are electric breaks. If you notice the two white wires coming out the back. They do need to be connected. One needs to be grounded the other will connect to the brake feed to supply power to this electric magnet. It doesn't mater which one is connected to which, both of them are white wires, you can connect either wire for either function. That should do it for the review of the seven inch, right hand electric break assembly for a 2,000 pound axle.

The only reason I do not give you 5 stars is because your web site. When internet ordering, it should instantly state when a part is out of stock. Even nicer would be expected restocking dates. The parts received were exactly what I ordered for my electric brake conversion from surge brakes at far less expense than reparing the internally rusted surge brake system. There was a plethora of information on your web site to assist me in ordering the correct parts for the conversion. Plus there were videos to see how to complete the conversion and how parts were installed and adjusted. Customer service was excellent. 659637

Just ordered a new set(different brand) They made it through the Rocky Mountain and I got them too hot on the other side. One wire got hot and shorted out. (About 3500 miles use) I had them set too tight on my controller. The spring clip is weak and laying in the box at delivery. 492992

These were to replace the worn out units on my snowmobile trailer. Initially I was very happy with the product, parts went in quickly and easily. After a year of use I took the drum off (to inspect the bearings) and I was shocked to see how rusted the drum pad levers and separators are! I feel that these are well designed but could use a better coating to prevent rust. 464312

Upon inspection these look extremely well built. Installation took about 15 minutes each. As it is winter here in Northern Minnesota, I won't know how well they perform for a couple months yet since they are on my boat trailer. I don't think there will be any problems. Great product. 335399

The parts came as expected. Fit was excellent. Finish was also better than expected. I was able to reuse the nuts that hold them to the axel. It would have been nice if the description indicated that the studs were metric, as I purchased SAE threaded nuts ahead of time. One other suggestion would be to partially strip the lead wires and leave the cut insulation in place to prevent the ends from fray during and shipping. The value (price compare) was excellent. Would buy again for sure. 336061

Perfect bolt on fit. The only thing different from the original OEM brake assembly on my RV was the coil retainer clips are a different design, but that doesn't affect the way they work. Only issue was during shipping a couple of those clips popped off the actuator arms, so the coils came loose from the assembly, and the coil springs were in the box loose, easy to reassemble though. Need a way to restrain the coils from bouncing up and down during shipping. So be careful of loose parts, removing packaging when unboxing these. I will be buying new hubs/ drums from eTrailer soon. GREAT Company, GREAT people. Brakes were bought to replace original brakes on a 1998 Jayco Hawk TT Model 24 RK with dual Dexter axles that my wife and I restored. 253569

  • Complete Electric Brake Installation for 2,000 lb Trailer Axle
  • With the axle measurement and the bearing number, I can confirm that you have 2,000 lb capacity axles on your trailers. You will want to get the Brake Mounting Flange, # 4-34, to weld onto each side of each axle. With that flange in place, you will want to mount the 7 inch Electric Trailer Brake Assembly # AKEBRK-2L on the left side of the axle and the # AKEBRK-2R on the right side of the axle. These are nearly identical parts, but installing on the correct side is very important....

  • Parts Needed to Install Trailer Brakes on 2015 Livin Lite Quicksilver 10.0 Tent Trailer
  • I can certainly help you determine what parts you need to add electric brakes to your 2015 Quicksilver 10.0 tent trailer. Based on my research, it looks like your trailer has a 2,000 pound axle. If that is the case you can use the following part numbers: Brake Mounting Flange - # 4-34 Brake Assemblies - # AKEBRK-2L left-hand side # AKEBRK-2R right-hand side Hub and Drums - # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K for 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern or # 8-173-16UC3 for 4 on 4 inch Breakaway Kit...

  • Parts Needed to Add Electric Drum Brakes to Trailers with 2,000 lb Axles with 5 on 4-1/2 Wheels
  • To add electric drum brakes to your trailers the first thing you will need are brake mounting flanges. There are different ones for different diameter axles. Given the lower capacity of the trailers I am guessing the diameter of the axles is 1-3/4 inches at most. That is the smallest brake flange there is, # 4-34, for 2K axles. Anything smaller or that isn't common will require a flange to be fabricated. A note on welding them on: generally it takes a special jig and someone with experience...

  • Availability of Brake Assemblies that are 7 inch by 1-1/4 inch in Size
  • 7 inch by 1-1/4 inch assemblies are a pretty standard size so we have exactly what you would need. The part # AKEBRK-2L would be what you need for the left side and the part # AKEBRK-2R for the right hand side.

  • Brake Flange that Can Fit to Square Axle that is 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches
  • You'd have to go with a brake mounting flange designed for a round axle since we don't have any specifically for square axles. Most likely some modifications will need to be made but since only people with experience installing brake flanges should perform this install they'll have a way to make it work. Using a flange with a smaller center hole like the part # 4-34 might be the way to go since it would give you more metal to work with to get it to fit.

  • How to Release Tension on Drum Brakes to Allow Hub Removal
  • If your trailer's hub/drum does not want to come off the spindle odds are that it is the brake shoes that are causing that friction. You can indeed adjust the brake star wheel to release the pressure on the pads. Another albeit extreme possibility is that excessive heat on the inner bearing damaged/fused it to the spindle, but if this were the case you would probably have noted that same heat damage on the outer bearing too. A gentle rocking motion often helps get the hub free of the spindle.
