Features to know about

Back Up Smoothly Without Brake Lockup: Free-Backing Hydraulic Design

When you’re reversing down a ramp or maneuvering into a tight space, you don’t want your trailer brakes locking up. This hydraulic trailer brake kit uses a free-backing design that lets the trailer roll in reverse without engaging the brakes, even when the actuator is activated. The 10" x 2-1/4" uni-servo assemblies mount to a standard 4-bolt flange and fit 13", 14", and 15" wheels on a 3,500-lb axle. The fall-away shoe design supplies full braking power moving forward and limited friction when backing up for smooth, controlled movement.

Strong, Reliable Stopping: Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each brake shoe is lined with automotive-grade friction material that’s fully bonded—not riveted—for longer life and better braking torque. The custom-molded pads have tapered edges and circular grinding to help prevent cracking or crumbling that can lead to lockup or uneven wear. The result is consistent braking performance that holds up under repeated stops and heavy use.

Durable Construction for Long Service Life: E-Coated Backing Plates

Rust and wear are common issues on trailer brakes, but these assemblies are built to resist both. The backing plates feature an e-coated finish that protects against corrosion, while fine-tooth adjustment gears allow precise manual tuning as the shoes wear. Adjuster plugs keep dirt and grime out to maintain smooth movement inside the housing.

Certified and Ready for Real-World Use: QAI and CSA Tested

Safety isn’t just claimed—it’s proven. These assemblies are certified by QAI and CSA after extensive testing for stopping distance and performance under real-world conditions. The SAE-N certified friction material also meets environmental standards in California and Washington, making it safe for use throughout the U.S. and Canada. Each kit includes left-hand (driver’s side) and right-hand (passenger’s side) assemblies with mounting bolts; nuts and lock washers are sold separately under part number BRKH10B.

Specs

Application

  • Application: most standard hub-and-drum assemblies, including Dexter, Lippert (LCI), and AL-KO

Dimensions

  • Dimensions: 10" diameter x 2-1/4" wide
  • Mounting flange bolt pattern: 4 bolt

Wheel Compatibility

  • Wheel size: 13", 14", and 15"

Weight and Capacity

  • Axle rating: 3,500 lbs

Warranty

  • Limited warranty: 1-year

Note

  • Note: Because free-backing brakes are designed to eliminate nearly all friction between the brake shoes and the drum when you are driving in reverse, a trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle while you are backing up.

The brake components in a kit are a great idea... too bad they didn't include lock washers and nuts to complete the installation. Kind of like selling a rifle without any bullets. They could have at least suggested an optional nut package to go along with it and save me a trip to the hardware store.
by:
I bought these to replace the original ones on my Master Tow tilt bed, tow dolly. The original hydraulic brakes would stay slightly engages after I applied the brakes and wouldn't release. The brake shoes were dragging and the hub would get so hot I couldn't put my hand on it. Well after replacing the brakes with these new ones everything works great and I couldn't be happier. I would highly recommend them ! They came in quickly and were very easy to install.

and the bolt removed from the old parts are different threads. I didn’t notice when purchasing that it stated I would need specific hardware kit. Off to the hardware store I go which is a 30 minute drive from our house.

I did a total rebuild of my boat trailer. I ordered nearly all of the parts from etrailer. New carpet for the bunks new brakes and backing plates as well as a new brake actuator. New wheel bearings and seals. This trailer is old a 1974 but all of the parts fit I was satisfied with all of the products I received and the timely manner in which they were delivered to my door I am very happy with the fine service I received a t trailer and the help and selecting the right parts thank you very much etrailer.
by:
My trailer is over 25 years old and my concern was if I was going to be able to get the right parts. Everthing was still the same as back then. Much easier to replace the whole Assembly as opposed to randomly replacing a part here and there. I now have a new trailer...well almost

Its been a year now since I have installed the hydraulic trailer brake kit assembly and drums to my boat trailer and they have been working as great as the day I installed them. No issues

by:
Overall excellent but they should come with new nuts and lock washers considering these are replaced because the originals are rotted along with the original hardware that is not usable
by:
Very fast service and especially liked the fact I got to talk to a human with an issue I had which got resolved very quickly

Excellent perfect match for my 2005 Jayco Baja trailer. Easy peasy to install. To make it easier to get the brake line threaded in... start it prior to bolting it into place.

These brakes look to be of good quality’. I am Replacing possibly the original set of four on an 18 year old boat trailer. Time with tell how these hold up in the saltwater.

Got everything installed and after testing, brakes are working well. I have no major complaints. Price is good. I could have spent a few extra dollars for the galvanized backing plates but this is for a boat trailer that only gets towed 25 miles or so each way to a freshwater lake once or twice a week during the summer, so I went the cheap route.

A couple of notes: spend the 5 bucks on the accompanying hardware kit (nuts and washers). I didn't, figuring that I would just use the nuts and washers off of the old plates. Problem is that the bolts on the old plates were course thread and the bolts on these are fine thread. I had to go to about 4 stores to find fine threaded bolts in the right size. I would have saved myself a couple of hours on the install if I would have ordered the hardware from etrailer.

Second, on my trailer, two of the bolts were stalled with the bolt head on the outside of the axle with the nut on the inside of the plate. With these new plates, the bolts are not removable, which meant that I had to install two of the nuts with an open end wrench rather than an impact socket because there was not enough clearance between the nut when threaded onto the bolt and the axle. Not the end of the world and even if I knew that in advance I would have still purchased this same product. But it did end up taking an extra few minutes for each axle to install the plates, so it is something that I thought that I would note here.

Just a couple of quibbles that were specific to my trailer. But if I were to do it over again, I would still purchase.

I have ordered complete brake assemblies like these in the past for my 5th wheel. They are great and easy to install. No need to fight those springs and keepers that hole the brake shoes to the backing plate, (Pain) just remove the wheel and four bolts, install plate and wheel and adjust the brakes. Done in less than 30 min. a wheel. You save time and money! Great way to do your brakes and I like E-trailer's fast delivery.

I have had nothing but problems with the backing plates. I have adjusted them about every time I have taken my boat out. One time my boat trailer locked up both tires going down the road about 35 mph. good thing it wasn't any faster or I would have been in the ditch. I'm going to change back to the Manuel lockout brakes once I can get all new drums and brakes.
by:
Shipment arrives on time as promised and they sure look good. I have a dropped axle trailer and I installed with the traditional adjuster at 6 o'clock position but with my dropped axle, I was not able to adjust the brake from outside. So I called etrailer help desk and the lady took down all my information and told me someone will call me back within 24 hours and they did and gave me a sound advice. Clock the plate so that the left adjuster will be at 9 o'clock position and right adjuster will be at 3 o'clock position. I did it yesterday, adjusted the brakes from outside, bleed the brakes and it works like it should be. Thank you etrailer and your supporting team.
by:
Great service. Arrived early, fit perfectly on my 1989 mastercraft trailer. The only complaint that I have is that the ports for adjusting the drum brakes are blocked by the vertical part of my trailer axle. I believe this a just a poor design of the axle because the original brake backing plate adjusting port was in the same spot. Had to adjust by adjusting out until I couldn’t get the drum on,then pulling drum off to adjust the brakes in until the drum would fit on again.
by:
Delivered in a timely manner. one shoe had slight damage but not bad enough to complain about. Have heavy boat that I bought used 4 years ago and trailer brakes had never worked. These bolted on easily, made slight adjustments and trailer brakes now work perfectly. Should have done this a long time ago.

Very happy, will order from etrailer again if needing brake parts.
by:
Could not get my boat home from storage due to bearing and hub failure on the boat trailer. Talked to Tamarah M at etrailer to get the parts needed for onsite repairs. She was very knowledgeable and helpful. When one part was not in stock, she helped to expedite the shipping of the other parts, so I could at least begin repairs. I talked to her on Tuesday evening and the parts arrived on Thursday morning. Very appreciative of the excellent customer service from Tamarah and the entire etrailer crew. I own three trailers, and etrailer will always be my first choice for parts.

2010 Chevrolet SS
This is a great value for a right and left pair of complete drum brakes (except the drum). They were well made and fit up perfectly. My biggest problem was getting the old, rusted bolts and nuts loose. I was replacing a very rusted brake that had been used in salt water for about ten years.

I looked into changing to disk brakes and Dacromet coated was 4 times more and SS almost 10 times more so I will just replace these every 5 years.

This brake assembly uses studs and nuts (nuts not supplied) and the old one used bolts and nuts. Took a little bit of work because the bolt head on the old one didn't move and there wasn't enough clearance to get a socket around it. A little grinding solve that though. This is really a fault of the old axle and not this new brake assembly.

The brake assemblies were a direct replacement for the OEM part. Installed easily. Can feel the brakes working smoothly when towing my bass boat. etrailer was fast at shipping the product. Time will tell how durable and corrosion resistant they are.

The FREE BACKING trailer brake is the way to go. No more having to lock the system out before you back up. No more forgetting to lock the system out before backing up. Had this for a year now and it works like a champ. I love E Trailer, they have everything for my 5 trailers.

Purchased a master cylinder and these free backing brakes to replace the water damaged parts on my 25 year old boat trailer. Even though my original parts were no longer available, the personnel at etrailer helped me find the correct replacement parts. I was ready to make modifications if necessary, but to my surprise, everything was a drop in replacement! I wouldn't hesitate using etrailer again.

Hey Michael! I would add hydraulic surge brakes since it is a boat trailer. Dealing with the hydraulic lines and fluid I would say a little more involved upfront, but the better option overall. Hey Martin, From what you're describing it sounds like you have 3,500 lb axles so I recommend using the Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit # AKFBBRK-35 because they have the free-backing feature so your brakes don't lock up when you back up. If your actuator has the reverse lockout, then you can use the etrailer Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit # AKUBRK-35 which is the same thing, just without the free-backing feature.

The great thing about surge brakes like the Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit # AKFBBRK-35 that you referenced is that since they use inertia to apply the trailer brakes they do compensate for differences in trailer weights.
