Video Transcript for Demco Hydraulic Brake Line Kit Installation

On this flatbed trailer, we're going to install the Demco Hydraulic Brake Line Kit for Single Brake Axle Trailers, part number DM5426. Let's go ahead and review the parts first. Over here we've got a small parts package to hold the line as well as a T for going out to your left and right side of our axle, and some clips to hold it in place if needed. Next we have a flexible line right here. That'll go from the frame down to the axle, which your T will go in the one side. We have a nice long length of tubing here, 16 foot long.

That'll go from your hydraulic actuator out to your axle. We have a short line here that'll typically go between the T and the driver side axle, and then on the other side of the T, we have a nice long length to go over to the passenger side. First thing we do, we're going to work with our long line first, starting from our actuator going back. We'll go ahead and just straighten it out as best we can, just enough to work with it, so we can work it from the front all the way towards the back axle. We'll go ahead and take a little section at a time and unravel it as we run it towards the back. Now on our trailer here, we're pretty lucky.

It's got cut-outs built into the frame here, so we can route or align tubing along with the wiring. Once we have our line pulled throughout the frame, we'll go ahead and take back from that tubing here and run it up to our actuator. Make sure you can seat it in all the way, and then we'll go ahead and thread it on the fitting. We'll use a 3/8 line wrench to tighten it down. Now we don't have to crush it, but just be nice and snug. All right, let's go ahead and move back to the other end of our line.

We're at the back axle on our trailer here, and we'll go ahead and work our flexible line. That does come with a mount that you can attach to your frame. There's a hole already installed in it, so you can use the self-tacking screw that comes with the kit to attach it to the frame of the trailer. In our case, the trailer already had hydraulic brakes on it, and so we're actually replacing everything and it already has a bracket already installed, so we'll go ahead and use that. We'll run this into the flexible line into this part here, and there's a clip that goes into the screw right here and holds it in place. We'll get it started, and maybe a few taps to set it in place.

We'll take our long piece of tubing here, and we'll go ahead and install it into the threads right here. Now of course, we have a lot of length left over, so we'll just coil it back up the best we can to take up the slack. I like to use some round object to wrap it around and then put it into place. Just like before, we'll go ahead and run the 2 lines together, and thread down the fitting. We'll now go work the other end of our flexible line, and that'll get the T, which is this part right here. Once again, this will thread together and then we'll go ahead and tighten these 2 together. Now let's go ahead and work for our short piece of tubing here. Remember this is going to go on our driver's side. We'll go ahead and run this into our backing plate first. We'll snug that down and then we'll bend our line as we need it to go out to our T. We'll take our last section of line here, and we'll go ahead and straighten it out just like we did before. We'll run it along the axle, and we'll also attach one end to our T. We'll go ahead and bend the line as needed to make sure there's clearance above the axle and we'll go ahead and thread it into a fitting. With all the connections made for the tubing, now we can go ahead and secure it down for good. Now we're going to use a self-tacking screw going into the axle here. Now this kit does not come with the screw that I am using. I'm using a self-tacking screw that uses a 3/8 head. We'll use the supplied line clips to hold it against the axle. Now we're using the self-tacking screw that does come with it. With all the lines secured, all that remains is to go ahead and fill the reservoir with brake fluid and bleed the brakes, and then check for leaks. That'll now finish it for the install of the Demco Hydraulic Brake Line Kit for Single Axle Trailers, part number DM5426. You can find this and everything else right here at etrailer.com. What's up, man.

This was a good product to get me started on replacing the corroding brake system on my 15 year boat trailer. It was not an exact replacement for what I had, but I was able to adapt it to my needs. Brake line was easy to shape with common tools, and avoided the need for me to buy and learn to use a flaring tool. 265251

  • Demco Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # DM5426 for Use on 1993 Calkins Trailer in a Marine Environment
  • I have confirmed with my contacts at Demco, that the Demco Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # DM5426 is coated with a galvanized finish. With the additional galvanized finish, it provides the additional corrosion resistance that you are looking for compared to steel brake lines. This brake line kit is also 3/16 of an inch in diameter, and is designed for use on single axle trailers. This kit includes lines and fittings needed to run brake fluid from your surge brake actuator to the trailer...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Hydraulic Brakes Locking Up
  • It sounds like your husband had to cut a hydraulic brake line to free-up your trailer's locked brakes. Causes for this kind of issue could be anything from a bad master cylinder in your actuator/coupler, to a blockage in one of the brake lines, to damaged/rusted brake assemblies, or to the brake fluid deteriorating. A 12-year-old trailer, even if used gently and stored properly in the off-season, could have by now developed any of the above problems. Trailer brakes should be bled and...

  • Recommendation on Switching from Electric Brakes to Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
  • Mobile home axles were designed as a one time use axle. The spindle of these axles are usually come in odd sizes, making it them incompatible with standard trailer hubs and parts. If any of these part need replacing, then the standard trailer hubs and parts will not work and then you may have to change your axles. However, if you are going to reuse your wheel hubs and if you have a 5 bolt brake flanges on the axles, then we might be able to find the parts needed to convert over to hydraulic...
