When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T43329007K Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the Titan zinc plated lever lock drum brake actuator. This has an adjustable ball design, has a 7,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this hydraulic actuator will synchronize your trailer brakes with your tow vehicle brakes. Uses the lever lock design coupler mechanism, right here, which ensures and easy, secure connection. It is adjustable. If I turn it over, you can see right down here, this nut right here, you can adjust it to fit 1 7/8", 2", and 50mm hitch balls.

This is a trigger latch design, so it's very easy to use. If you notice the breakaway kit, it comes as it is included. Has the carabiner hook end, right here, that you hook onto your tow vehicle. Basically, what your breakaway kit would do, is you hook this to your tow vehicle and if you're in a situation where the trailer ever comes detached from the tow vehicle, it'll pull on this cable, which will automatically pull this lever, which will activate the master cylinder, apply the brakes on your runaway situation. This is made of a durable steel construction, has a nice zinc plating to it, which is very corrosion resistant. It is a bolt on installation.

If you notice the holes right here, they are an industry standard 3" apart, center to center. This part is made in the USA. A few specs on this, this is designed to be used with hydraulic drum breaks. As we have mentioned, it'll fit a ball size of 1 7/8", 2", or 50mm. The mounting on this, let me turn this around.

It's designed to mount on a 3" wide trailer tongue channel. Here's your 3" wide. Capacity again, is 7,000 pounds. Maximum tongue weight is 700 pounds. Now, one note I do want to mention, if you notice on the back here where the connection is for your hydraulic brake line, this model does not include a reverse lock out, which might be here.

It is recommended that you equip your trailer with free backing brakes, so that when you drive in reverse, it'll keep from triggering your trailer brakes. I just want to show you how the lever lock works. It does have extra security with this pin and clip in here, so right now, if you tried to open it, it won't do that. You just pull the clip out, pull the pin out, and then that'll release the level lock design right here. You just push on this latch to unlock it from the back and release it, and you can see that it's open now. I happened to pull a 2" diameter hitch ball. You can see it'll fall right on there, and then all you do is push your lever back, it goes around the ball. Then, for the extra security, just put your pin right through the hole, just like that, put the clip in through there to hold the pin into place, and then it's all locked into position on your trailer. That should do it for the review on the Titan zinc plated lever lock drum brake actuator, the adjustable ball design, and a 7,000 pound weight capacity.

I had wanted a lever lock style brake actuator for my boat trailer for years. I had to get serious when a repair shop bent the heck out of the latch on the turn wheel style actuator on my trailer. A quick search on the internet led me to etrailer.com. They have an excellent website with clear and easy to understand descriptions along with pictures and videos. I had planned to order the repair kit (which etrailers has), but decided why not replace the turn style wheel with the lever lock. I ordered it and it was shipped right away. It arrived as promised on time. It was an easy swap out on my trailer and now I have the lock style I prefer. I will use etrailer.com again in the future. 578058

Do you have a question about this Brake Actuator?

  • Replacement for Atwood Surge Brake Actuator 82541
  • It sounds like you have free backing braking assemblies on your trailer so a lockout at the trailer coupler is not needed. In order to replace the Atwood Surge Brake Actuator 82541, I recommend using the Titan Leverlock Brake Actuator part # T43329007K although the Brake Actuator with Manual Lockout part # T4500600 would work as well. The Leverlock is more cost effective and has an easier to use latching mechanism in my opinion. The mounting bolt holes on the Leverlock are 3" apart...

In regards to differences, Demco makes a wide range of different trailer and towing products whereas Titan specializes more in trailer brakes. • Adding Electric Lockout and 5-Way to Trailer with Titan Model 60 Actuator
  • To add an electric lockout to your Titan Model 60 actuator only requires the part # T4748800 and then if you wanted to add a shroud to protect the lock out you'd also need the part # T4835800183. To activate the electric lock out you need a reverse light circuit carried to it. Typically a 5-way is needed for this to carry the extra circuit. For a 5-way you'd then want the part # W002290 which you can replace your 4-way with. For a 7-way to a 5-way adapter then you'd want the part #...

  • Replacement Cap for Leaky Titan Model 60 Actuator
  • That rubber plug looking piece is not part of the cap assembly. It would not get attached to the cap. Where exactly is the fluid leaking out of? If it's through the top of the cap it is bad and would need to be replaced with part # T4480701. If it's leaking around the threads that would indicate that the cap just may not be tightened down all the way or the o-ring is bad.

  • Replacement Master Cylinder Parts For Titan Model 60 Brake Actuator
  • I would recommend using a spray lubricant like WD-40 to try and loosen the cap on the master cylinder of your coupler actuator. Using a tool like vise-grips should allow you to remove the cap from the housing. If you are able to remove the cap and find it needs to be replaced, you would order part # T4480701. If you are still unable to remove the cap, we offer replacement master cylinders for the Titan Model 60 coupler actuators. If you have drum brakes on your trailer and you have...

  • 3,500 lbs. Axle with Hydraulic Drum Brakes Kit
  • I have a solution for you but unfortunately we do not carry any axles that come with hydraulic brakes. This axle is 89" long with a weight capacity of 3,500 lbs. which is the same as the # 35545E-ST-EZ-89 Dexter Axle you were looking at. For your Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assemblies you will want...

This is the Model 60 Brake Actuator designed for drum brake applications and has a weight capacity of 7,000 pounds. I have attached a short video demonstration on this actuator that you can also check out.

  • Surge Brake and Electric Brake Controller Compatibility
  • You will not have any compatibility issues between the brake controller and the surge actuator. The reason is because the brake controller will not be used in any way with the surge actuator. The brake output circuit will basically dead-end and not go anywhere on your trailer so you would not have to worry about it in any way. The trailer basically will do all the braking by itself between the surge actuator and the disc brakes. You would not need to remove any fuses either to prevent...

  • Hardware Needed to Install the Titan Model 60 Actuator part # T43329007K
  • You would want to use a Grade 5 Bolt that is about 4 inches long that can fit a 7/8 of an inch hole. I spoke to Titan and they recommend either a 3/4 inch hole or a 7/8 inch hole. I attached a template for mounting the Titan Actuator part # T43329007K for you to check out.
