Are 9-1/2" Trailer Brakes Actually Worn Down 10" Trailer Brakes

Updated 01/27/2026 | Published 08/16/2024

Question:

I was looking at trailer hydraulic brake assemblies and drum/hub’s. I measured my current breaks at 9 1/2 inches pad to pad and the drum measured 11 1/2 inches. Would 10” work? I’m not sure if I am measuring wrong or if they are just that worn. I was looking at part AKHD-545-35-EZ-K. My trailer is dual axle and the tongue say 6000lbs. Does that mean each axle is rated for 3000lbs and the assemblies should be too? Would 3500lbs work? Wheels are 15” 5 4.5.

Thanks for reaching out again, Devin!

A 1/2" difference sounds like a lot until you think about it just being a 1/4" off of each brake pad - so that's definitely feasible especially if it's been quite a while since they were changed.

With all that being said, it's never a bad thing to verify fitment. So, for the brakes you're looking at the Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit # AKFBBRK-35 which are free backing and mount using a 4-bolt pattern with the holes measuring 2-7/8" apart from each other (4" for the ones across from each other).

Then for the hub/drum you'll want the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K which has Inner Bearing L68149, Outer Bearing L44649, and a grease seal with a 1.719" ID.

If all of this matches what you currently have then these parts will fit perfectly on your trailer!

Hey Devin, how did things go with the 10-inch hydraulic brake kit and the Easy Grease hub and drum assembly? Did the measurements line up with your trailer’s setup? Your update could make it easier for others checking fitment on similar dual-axle trailers.
