Tech Tip: If don't already have brakes that are free-backing, you'll need to get some. Otherwise, your brakes will keep locking up on you when you're backing up. And trust us on this one - upgrading now will be a lot less work than upgrading your wiring harness and a compatible actuator with an electric lockout.

Never Second-Guess Your Connection Again with the Demco EZ-Latch

Few things matter in towing as much as a secure connection to your hitch ball. Have you ever coupled your trailer, only to re-do the whole thing just convince yourself that you had a secure connection? Heck, maybe you even pushed on your truck a few times just to be certain.

The thing of it is, your basic coupler doesn't really have a mechanism to tell you that it has a firm grasp on the hitch ball. You either just have to eyeball it or try to wiggle the coupler latch until it closes. If there's a significant gap between your ball mount and your hitch ball - otherwise known as highballing - it can put your trailer at risk of becoming disconnected while towing.

The underside of the Demco eZ-Latch shows the inside of the coupler with the latch disengagedThe underside of the Demco eZ-Latch shows the inside of the coupler with the latch engaged

To prevent this, the coupler portion of this trailer brake actuator has an automatic latching mechanism known as the EZ-Latch. To use it, you won't need to do anything different from what you're used to. As you lower the trailer onto the ball using your tongue jack, you'll see the latch rise. Then, just listen for it for the metalic clink . When you hear it, you'll know for certain that you've got a good, strong connection, allowing you to be on the road a little bit quicker and with a lot more confidence.

Built-In Theft Deterrent

Unlike most couplers, which have a pin hole on the handle latch, the EZ-Latch coupler features a hole on the side of the coupler itself. Inserting a coupler lock through this hole will keep the latch from lifting, preventing disconnect and theft.

Sturdy, Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Chances are, you're replacing your actuator because your old one is rusted out. This one will too, but probably only the outside, and that won't be for a long time.

This Demco actuator features a durable zinc coating with a 120-hour salt spray rating that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. On the inside, the composite master cylinder is made of corrosion-resistant glass-reinforced nylon to further ensure durability and longevity.

How Does a Surge Brake Actuator Work?

When you're towing, the momentum of your rig pushes and pulls on your hitch ball as you slow to a stop. And with a surge brake actuator, that momentum uses the coupling point to push back on the inner portion of your surge brake actuator, which then compresses the master cylinder inside. As it contracts, it pressurizes your hydraulic brake lines, and ultimately engages your trailer brakes. When you start moving again, your tow vehicle pulls that inner portion back out, allowing the trailers wheels to start rolling again.

Easy install. Well made. Thought maybe for [the price] the grade 8 install bolts and nuts may be included, but not so. Have not towed the trailer yet, but see no reason for it not to function well.

  • New Brake Assemblies, Hub/Drums, Brake Lines, and Bearing Buddy for Trailer with 3,500 lb Axle
For as trashed as those brake assemblies are I am impressed with how spotless that spindle is! Based on the bearing numbers you mentioned you have a #84 spindle and the hub part # AKHD-545-35-G-K is correct. Since this its galvanized it's a really great option as it will fight corrosion. The flexible brake line kits like the part # 18SI-BLKIT is what I would go with. They are just as durable as anything else and a lot easier to install. The brake assemblies # AKFBBRK-35R-D and # AKFBBRK-35L-D...

To check for a Free Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake # AKFBBRK-35 you will need to remove your brake drum assembly. The free backing brakes have a different front brake shoe. This shoe is designed to fall away when the trailer is moving in reverse. The fall away brake shoe will have a pivot point in the shoe that allows it to fall away(See Image). The Demco Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuator # DM72VR can be used with the free backing brakes as the Demco 8605001 is no longer an active item....

We have the perfect replacement for your Atwood 84132 drum brake actuator, the Demco # DM72VR. Just like your Atwood, the Demco is for hydraulic drum brakes, rated for 7,000 lbs instead of 6000 lbs, mounts to a 3" wide trailer tongue and fits a 2" ball. It also has a trigger-style latch, zinc plating and is made in the USA.

The Demco Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuator part # DM72VR should be a direct replacement for the Atwood 61101 Brake Actuator that you have now. This newest updated it rated at 7K instead of 6K. This is a bolt on option that mounts on 3" centers. The review you are referring to, the customer did indeed weld the brake actuator to his tongue but this is not required for installation because it is a bolt-on actuator. • Surge Brake Actuator to Replace Atwood 82543
The closest option we have to replace your Atwood 82543 actuator is part # DM72VR. However, it doesn't have the lockout like your Atwood does. To add a lockout use # T4748800 but it's an electric lockout unlike the Atwood's manual lockout. It wires into the reverse light circuit on your truck through the trailer connector. I've attached videos of both actuators for you to take a look at.

Thanks for the photo. That is a great help for getting you the correct replacement. I recommend the Demco Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuator - Drum Brakes - Zinc Plated - 2" Ball - 7,000 lbs # DM72VR for a zinc plated option. This coupler does not have the reverse lockout, so you will need to add it using the Replacement Solenoid Valve for Titan Brake Actuators with Reverse Lockouts # T4748800 and the shield # T4835800183. We don't have any Atwood replacement master cylinders any longer...

Is your trailer sitting as level as possible? Sounds like it could be sitting possibly nose high and combined maybe with a bit of play in the ball mount is creating the slamming you are experiencing. It's also possible your surge actuator has a bad shock and the bump is causing the actuator to apply and release the brakes quickly which is causing what you described. If you can push in on the front of the actuator you should be able to see the actuator somewhat slowly rebound to the fully...

  • Is There Demco Surge Coupler that Can be Used with Drum Brakes
Hey Al, so we have a solution but since disc brakes require a higher PSI than drum the # DM62VR would not work on drum brakes. Instead you'd want to go with the part # DM72VR which is basically the exact same thing but made for drum brakes. You can lock this to a hitch ball with the coupler lock like the InfiniteRule part # IR66FR which was designed specifically for this coupler.

Demco surge couplers like the part # DM72VR you mentioned are really great overall. We've found that they are very reliable and do a great job applying the trailer brakes. Way better than the now discontinued Atwood actuator you have that was known for problems. This part number is for drum so for a disc version you'd want the # DM62VR and you'd be set. This comes with an electric reverse lockout as well. Now I don't know your axle capacity or wheel bolt pattern so I am not able to give...

  • Replacement For Discontinued Atwood Drum Brake Actuator For 2 Inch Hitch Ball
Thanks for all that detailed info, and Atwood is out of business which is why you can't find the exact replacement. We do have an option for you, that will bolt on, with the caveat being you will likely have to use shims. The reason for that is the only option to replace it is a bolt-on coupler meant for 3" wide channel tongues, so it won't be quite 3-1/2" wide. So what I recommend is one from Titan, which does have mounting holes 3" apart on center like yours, but you will also need to...

  • How Do I Know If I Have Free-Backing Brakes?
Your trailer must have free backing brakes if you have never used the surge brake actuating coupler reverse lockout. If you did not have free backing brakes, your brakes would most likely brake even if they didn't lock up when you back up because of the trailer weight pushing against the hitch ball. The only way to know for sure is to pull your hub/drum off the spindle and look at the hydraulic cylinder. Free-backing brakes like # AKFBBRK-7R-D will have only one pin coming out and it...

  • Adding Manual Lockout to Surge Brake Actuator

  • Trailer Surge Brake Coupler Operation
I am not sure what surge coupler you have on your ditch witch trailer, but I think I can help with the function. Surge brakes use the momentum of the vehicle and the hitch ball to activate stopping by pushing against the plunger of the master cylinder inside the coupler. This is like hitting a brake pedal. The amount of force is transferred into the braking pressure of the hydraulic brake system. So when pulling it has no pressure (like having your foot off the brake pedal) and when...
