Highlights

  • Custom Fit for Your Vehicle: Works with your vehicle's existing wiring.
  • Smooth, controlled stops: Proportional braking matches your trailer’s braking to your vehicle for even deceleration.
  • Clean, factory-style look: Only a small dash knob is visible while the main unit mounts behind the dash.
  • Fast, plug-and-play install: Custom harness connects directly with no cutting or splicing needed.
  • Confident emergency control: Press the knob for manual override to steady sway or stop quickly.
  • Compact and safe design: Meets UNECE R21 and FMVSS 201 standards; rated 18 amps continuous.

Features to know about

Saves Space with Compact Knob: Mounts Behind the Dash

Traditional brake controllers can clutter your cabin and bump your knees, but this one hides the main unit out of sight. The Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty uses a small dash knob—only 1-7/8" long and 9/16" wide—with the rest of the system tucked behind the dash. It looks clean and factory-style while keeping safety clearances around airbags. The knob handles power adjustment, manual override, and LED alerts, so you get full control without any bulky box in view.

Installs Fast with Plug-In Harness: No Splicing Required

Installing a brake controller doesn’t need to be complicated. The included custom harness plugs directly into your vehicle’s tow port for a true plug-and-play setup. One reviewer noted the harness fit perfectly and even came with a 2D drilling diagram for easy placement of the knob. With roughly 3 feet of cable between the control knob and module, you have flexibility to mount everything where it fits best—no cutting or extra wiring needed.

Delivers Smooth, Balanced Braking: Proportional Control up to 2 Axles

Towing feels safer and more predictable with proportional braking. The Tow-Pro Liberty’s built-in 3-axis accelerometer matches trailer brake pressure to your own braking intensity, eliminating that push-pull lurch at stops. It supports trailers with up to 2 axles (4 brake assemblies) and works with both electric and electric-over-hydraulic systems. The result is even braking, less wear on tires and pads, and better confidence every time you slow down.

Keeps You Aware: Color-Coded LED Feedback

You always know what’s happening thanks to color cues on the knob. When you hit the brakes, the light shifts from blue to red as power increases, showing exactly how much braking force is being applied. During setup or calibration, flashing green and blue lights guide you through each step until it turns solid blue—then you’re ready to tow.

Built Tough and Ready for Long Hauls: Tested for Safety Standards

The Tow-Pro Liberty meets both UNECE R21 and FMVSS 201 safety regulations for sustainability and crash performance. It delivers up to 18 amps continuous output across a 9V–16V range and carries a 2-year warranty. Once installed, calibration happens automatically—just drive normally while it learns its orientation—and then it stays ready for every trip ahead.

What is Proportional Braking?

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

This is one of our favorite brake controllers, with flawless braking and a tiny dash knob that looks like it came straight from the factory. It's so easy to adjust your settings or activate manual override.

by:

Plug and play. What else can you say ? The only hard part of the installation was finding the location of the control knob. Haven't got to use it yet but if it performs like they say it does then it's perfect for my application. Also had a question for e-trailer and it was answered very promptly. Cudo's to E-Trailer !

by: Chuck 02/13/2025

This controller works amazingly well, considering the ease of installation, especially with the vehicle-specific wiring harness. I made several trips between Missouri and Colorado last year, loaded and unloaded, and a small twist of the dial compensated for the weight differences and braking requirements.

by:

What an easy install. Connected to the original harness. Worst part was modifying the original accessory blank, and that took all of 5 minutes. Love how everything tucks behind the dash. No more bumping my knee on the controller. Just one tiny knob. Looks factory.

by:

easy to install, works great on my 2026 frontier pro 4x . i needed a brake control for my dump trailer. the redarc tow pro fit the bill. when my trailer is loaded and i am weighted at the land fill my gross weight is around 8500 lbs so i needed this controler. my truck did not have one .but all wiring was in place for one to be installed.i now don't worry about stopping when i have to.

by:

Very slick integration with the Nissan Frontier truck. I just got it so I don't have a lot of use yet, but way better than a knee knocker.

by:

the product seems good and the site is excellent I only Wish you would have packeged it together with the the mounting panel for installation its silly to package it with the correct wiring harness without the mounting panel I watched your video which showed how to turn the panel plug into a mounting panel but for and extra few dollars I would have been happy to buy the mounting panel now I had to order one and wait for shipping so installation will wait for a few days .

by:

Delivered quick, easy install, works good. I did however lose the little bezel indicator thing so I can’t see the cool lights. Wiring harness even fit the hardest part of the installation was deciding where to mount everything.

by:

Install was straight forward and really easy. I was looking for something that looked factory installed in the truck and this was perfect. I haven’t towed with it yet but it looks great. I will update this again once I tow with it.

by:

Absolutely Amazing! Setting 3 is just perfect for my 4000# trailer on my Nissan Armada. So easy to try other settings as well, Installation was straight forward with the optional wiring harness. That harness was the best $[XX] I ever spent.

by:

This was easy to install. It would have been easier if I had purchased the dashboard accessory panel plug made for the brake controller. Instead, I use the one I removed from the truck console. It took me a while to get it to work - the etrailer video on the controller installation explains how to make it fit. It wasn't bad, but it did involve a little more work.

by:

It works well as expected. There is little space on the dashboard of our Nissan Frontier for mounting a traditional brake controller - I'm 5'11" and my wife it 5'2" and we always bumped our knees on the old controller. Installation was a little tricky on our Frontier, requiring removal of the lower dashboard cover but I followed simple YouTube instruction videos and it wasn't hard. I highly recommend this controller.

by:

I was very impressed with etrailer. Their service was great. The installation video was very helpful and accurate. The redarc light berry is working great.

by: Chris01/04/2025

I didn't realize when I bought a new Frontier truck that I could no longer use traditional underdash brake controllers like I had for past 40 years. This meant that this Redarc was one of only a few brake controllers that I could use.
Mounting it was a bit tricky and the supplied instructions weren't good. Fortunately others before me had figured it out and posted better step by step instructions with pictures.
The brake controller itself works very well and provides the best and smoothest braking control I've ever experienced with my twin axle camper on multiple trips this last summer including one trip of over 1,000 miles around the UP of MI and northern WI.

by:

Watched videos, read directions take your time test fit where you want it to go. I used screws for install ,then zip tied wiring. You only get one blue blink until you actually install on trailer with brakes

by: Randy04/23/2025

The break controller works great...no problems. I've since sold the single axle trailer and purchased two more, one single axle new and one double axle used. I plan on stripping the cargo trailer and replacing the breaks and anything else that needs it for the suspension, creating a type of mini-home or tiny home on it. Thanks for reaching out. I will use your services for this new build. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Being new to towing a larger trailer requires research. After doing a lot of it, both through user reviews and manufacturer websites, we landed on the Rearc Liberty Brake Controller for our Tacoma. We have just over 1000 miles towing with this unit. It has performed extremely well. Towing for us includes city, highway, mountains, and even off-road to access our mountain home. Installation was straight forward and the ability to install the controller in virtually any position is an added bonus. I was able to install the dash knob in a blank panel giving the Tacoma a factory appearance, and controller located under drivers seat. I installed this unit on a non tow package Tacoma, so wiring was a bit intimidating at first. But using etrailer’s web site as a reference had everything operational in a couple afternoons. Great product so far and we look for years of use. Highly recommend.

by:

Although I have no foreseeable plans to tow a trailer, my Nissan P4X came with the towing package that doesn't include a brake controller. I chose this for the clean look and because of limited space in the cab, plus it comes highly recommended by other Frontier owners. I installed the control unit behind the driver's side kick panel. The instructions were some of the most well written ones I've seen in a long time. Took me just over two hours and much of that was getting the switch to fit just right. If it does everything they claim it will be probably the most advanced unit I've had.

by: Ken06/05/2024

I purchased the Redarc Liberty brake controller because I couldn’t find a place to mount my Tekonsha where I wouldn’t bash a knee or shin on it or cover an airbag.
So far, I’m very happy with the Redarc Liberty brake controller; although, I haven’t used it for towing yet, and I’m not sure it is operating properly. Apparently, I should have blue lights while it is learning which way the control unit is oriented but I don’t have blue lights.
Anyway, let me share information on the installation. I purchased the wiring harness for my vehicle, which I highly recommend as it was same cost as the universal harness, and a big time saver. I did not buy the blank switch panel for the switch installation as another reviewer stated he was able to modify the original switch blank. Big mistake, I highly recommend buying the appropriate switch panel for your vehicle. My Toyota blank switch panel was excessively complicated so I had to saw and melt a pile of plastic (see the picture) out of it without damaging the visible portion or the clips which hold it in.
Finding a suitable location to secure the controller up under the dash is a challenge with modern cars. After removing two pieces of plastic trim, I did manage to pull the panel below the steering column far enough out to complete the install. The unit it does look good. Very clean.
We’ll be towing the big trailer next week so I hope it works.

by:

The perfect brake controller for my Nissan truck. Wire harness plugged right in. entire install less than an hour. This is the way to go.

by: Dan05/27/2026

The Redarc Liberty was exactly what I wanted for my ‘20 Ridgeline. I ordered the custom pigtail and mounted everything behind the dash panel on the left side of the steering wheel. There was a blank switch cover available on the dash panel and I cut away the webbing on the back side of it (very soft plastic, Swiss Army knife) which allowed the control switch to fit right in, between the retaining clips of the blank. The drill bit sizes indicated in the instructions were not big enough for the control knob and plastic bezel so I just increased the bit sizes until the holes were big enough. Honda provided a pigtail with bare ends; I didn’t want to crimp any wires. Honda also said to put their provided fuse in slot 3 in the under hood aux fuse box; the fuse was the wrong type and there was already a 20a fuse in the appropriate slot. My Honda service tech advised Honda usually includes the wrong style of fuse and also usually installs the right one anyway. Go figure. I finished the install the night bf I picked up my new TT; took about 3 hours. It wasn't difficult but I’m pretty OCD. The most work involved routing the wires so as to avoid pinching or bending them too severely. I set the control on 5, tested it with the trailer hooked up in the sales lot and bumped it up to 6. I never felt the trailer on braking at all on the way home. Very smooth and I like the fact that it looks like a factory install. I couldn’t be happier with this controller. E-trailer’s video for the install was a great help, although I mounted the control box in a slightly different spot. This is my second purchase of towing accessories from E-trailer and I am pleased with the service and pricing both times.

Vehicle: 2012 Nissan Xterra PRO4-X

I
haven't had a chance to use the device yet as I'm waiting on my trailer to arrive. However, the product seems very high quality, the install was super simple, and I did have a chance to test the device, remote control, and 7-pin and everything appears to be working correctly. The provided harness for the Nissan was plug-n-play and all tests were successful. The instructions come with a great 2D drawing of the hole dimensions and spacing so drilling a rocker plate is super easy.

The device wires into the existing plug under the steering column and there is ample space on the left side of the foot well to mount it flush against the body panel. Just remove the lower dash to pop out the rocker blank. Drill the rocker plate and fit the knob and reinstall the rocker plate and dash. Affix the controller module to the foot well steel wall. Connect both wire. And then you are good to go. Cables have about an extra 8-12" of unused length if you wanted to locate it elsewhere but I can't imagine a reason to do so.

by: Kent04/09/2025

Its simple and fits in the dash like it should be there. It controls the trailer as it should. it only lights up when the trailer is connected so you don't see any annoying light during normal driving. I would recommend, it has worked for me. installed in a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee

by: Colin01/08/2025

Installed it on my 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness. Ordered this without the harness so had to order that separately. I think the RED52VR is what I should have ordered to include the harness. Did not like the access and the very small wire gauge on the brake pedal the instructions said to tap into so when running the wire from the 7 pin kit ETBC7 from the back of the car I ran a 3rd wire which I tapped into the brake signal going to the factory 4 pin control box in the spare tire well. I ran the wires up underside the driver side and up through the floor by the drive door rather than into the engine bay. Found a neat location to mount the controller and ground wire. Installed the control switch after drilling and dremelling the blank as shown in the great video etrailer has. Unit calibrated and worked just as advertised. Been on short test run. Need a longer trip to experiment with the brake level setting.

by:

Found a great bracket location to the left of steering column. Vertical plate with a lip on which the unit can sit. Zip ties on multiple corners did the trick. Tricky to get all the webbing out of my panel's blank plug and drilling neatly...Big hole in center needs to be more like 7/16ths than 3/8ths for the nut to go in easily. I ended up not even using the little white plastic bezel ring behind the knob.

by:

2024 Nissan frontier I chose to install this in one of the blank plates that was for accessories it was a little difficult to get the plate out and after much use of a dremel tool was able to cut away the backing of the blank off plate to accommodate the control knob, I also had to cut away the accessories box inside the dash as the control knob would not fit due to length. This system on my application does not respond unless plugged into the trailer which is fine Over all I like the little knob and it appears almost like a stock Nissan part , so that’s nice.

Hey Josh, since you're using a plug and play harness # RED39FR there shouldn't be a whole lot of riff raff to use it so the only thing I can think of is that either you have a faulty harness or that there is a blown fuse somewhere that needs to be replaced. You'd need to consult your owner's manual for a fuse diagram and look for anything relating to towing and check the fuses. There's also a chance that the fuse itself was never put in, so I'd keep my eye out for that as well.
