Recommended Hitch and 7-Way Connector for a 2022 Nissan Frontier

Updated 12/24/2025 | Published 12/21/2025

Question:

I have a 2022 Nissan Frontier. It has a tow mode but didn’t come with a tow hitch. What would I need if I wanted to potentially tow a trailer in the future? Thanks!

Hey Chase. To add a hitch to your 2022 Nissan Frontier, I recommend our etrailer item # e98869. This custom fit 2" hitch has a 5,000 lbs towing capacity and a 500 lbs maximum tongue weight. It can be used with a weight distribution system which would increase these capacities to 8,000 lbs and 800 lbs.

To add a 7-Way connector to your Nissan we have two options depending on where your truck was sold. One of them is designed specifically for the Canadian model Frontiers. Both of them include the required tow relays. I have listed them below:

Canadian Market - T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector item # 118281

US Market - T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector item # 118266

To tow a trailer with brakes you'll also need a brake controller, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness item # RED53CR. This is a proportional brake controller that activates your trailer's brakes when your Nissan decelerates or stops.

The reason the Tow-Pro Liberty is the best option is because of its unique installation method where the only visible portion is the control knob that's about the size of a nickel. The main unit is hidden away inside your dash to be completely out of the way and out of sight.

I have a 2025 Nissan Frontier and purchased the T-one vehicle wiring harness, and the Red Arc Tow Pro Liberty brake controller with the included Nissan Frontier wiring harness. I also purchased 331-TPSI-003 Mounting Panel for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controller Control Knob that snapped into the 4 wheel drive switch location to mount the exposed portion of the brake controller to. I have 2 wheel drive truck. There are other switch mounting options available at e trailers for the Nissan. Also purchased the C42JR Curt Replacement OEM USCAR Trailer Connector - Dual Connection - 7-Way RV Style and 4-Way Flat. I also had to swap the blue and black wire in the 2 pin connector because Nissan reversed them on some models. So after installing the brake controller and wiring harness when I would connect a trailer it would automatically lock the trailer brakes. I reached out to e-trailers and they suggested this and Swapping those two wires fixed the problem.

I have a Nissan Frontier model S, 2025 4wd. I purchased the 2” DrawTie Hitch and installed. It installs in less then 30min. I also installed the appropriate Redarc brake controller and necessary wiring harness as well. There is a bracket under steering column the brake controller can be mounted to. I also purchased the 7-way trailer connector as well and mounting bracket for it, so it mounts to the hitch. I did run into a known issue and e-trailer was amazing troubleshooting with me. There is a known issue with the wiring for the electronic brake and the aux 12v (2 wires that are run separately and are in the 2 pin wire harness) wiring from Nissan. The wires are reversed, so I had to flip the wires on the harness from the kit I purchased. TECHNICAL BULLETIN: TB14-02 This is a Nissan issue not an e-trailer issue. Highly recommend once everything is hooked up to see if your wiring is reversed from Nissan. It’s an easy fix.
