Video Transcript for etrailer Brake Controller ETBC7L Review

Today we're taking a look at the 7-way RV upgrade kit for trailer brake controller installations. If you only have a 4-way flat on your vehicle, and if you want to install a brake controller that pulls power from the 7-way trailer connector, instead of wiring directly into your vehicle, this kit is designed to adapt your plug for use with your brake controller.Again, it simply allows you to use a trailer brake controller that pulls power from your trailer connector, instead of wiring it into your vehicle. This is great for use with a Tekonsha Prodigy RF auto brake and Curt Echo trailer brake controllers. It features the pre-wired seven and 4-way trailer connectors. This system mounts easily at the rear of your vehicle, with the included mounting bracket. Right here we have our 7-way. It's a spring loaded lid with a rubber gasket on the inside to create a nice tight seal when it's shut.

It protects those connection points from moisture, dirt, and grime. Then right here we have the 4-way. It has a protective cap as well. Very easily accessible. They're side by side right there. Then on the backside we have the wiring that comes out.

It's protected with a split loom design. It keeps the wires bundled together and protected. We have the 4-way that comes off of here. Then we have the 4-way right here, which plugs into the existing 4-way trailer connector on the vehicle. Then you have just four more wires that you need to hard wire.Your blue wire is for electric brakes, butt connector already on there.

Black wire is for positive power, butt connector already on there. White wire is your ground wire, with a ring terminal pre-installed. Then your yellow wire is for auxiliary, or backup lights, with the butt connector already installed. It also comes with everything else you need. We have the 12 gauge wire that let's you run power from your vehicle's battery to the trailer connector. It features the general purpose thermoplastic installation.

It's highly resistant to acids, gasoline, oil, grease, and most industrial solvents. We have the heavy duty 40 amp circuit breaker, which protects your vehicle's electrical system by preventing overloads. Then all of your installation hardware is included. We have the appropriate ring terminals for battery and breaker hookup. We have the self tapping screws for attaching the circuit breaker and the ground connections. Then we have some cable ties that are used for securing any loose of excess wiring. Now please note, if your vehicle does not already have a 4-pole flat trailer connector installed, the etrailer.com application guide can be used to find the easy to install connector, made specifically for your vehicle. That's gonna do it for today's look at the 7-way RV upgrade kit for trailer brake controller installations.

I bought a few different items and had a wonderful lady over the phone who helped me picking out the right stuff and also to save me money. I gave everything 5 star rating except for this one. The reason is two-fold. 1) the instruction video was not good at all and the look and setup of the car in the video was different than mine which forced me to do solutions on my own which feels so and so since I'm neither a car mechanic nor an electrician. Also, the most difficult part of it all, to snake the wire to the front, was shown by flashing the camera for a few seconds... instead i had to remove covers underneath the car and improvise on my own 2) the kit wasn't complete and I had to make runs to the hardware store to buy extra bolts/nuts to assemble the bracket. And the wire itself was barely long enough to make it to the battery which was another reason I had to come up with my own McGyver solutions and wasn't able to follow the guiding instructions from the video. In short, the installation took way longer than expected and left me worried if it'll work. It is done and is working so far, but I would recommend an updated video and more generous length of wire plus extra bolts/nuts for future kits... 628631

  • Recommended Brake Controller for 2018 Subaru Outback
  • For a brake controller I recommend taking a look at the Curt Echo # C51180. This is a really unique controller that will simply plug into the 7-Way connector on your Outback and pair with your smartphone via Bluetooth after downloading the free app. This allows for a really simple installation and setup and eliminates the need for a separate unit to be permanently mounted inside your vehicle like other controllers. Its built-in accelerometer will activate the trailer brakes at the same...

  • Wiring Needed to Use Curt Echo Brake Controller on a 2006 BMW X5 with 4-Way Flat Connector
  • You are most of the way there! The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 that you purchased for your 2006 BMW X5 just needs the basic trailer lighting functions and 12V power to be fully operational. A 4-Way Flat connector like the popular Tekonsha ZCI # 119250KIT provides the basic trailer lighting functions so once that is installed you simply need to install the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit # ETBC7L. This includes the 4-Way to 4-Way/7-Way adapter as well as wiring for you...

  • Is Reverse Light Circuit Needed When Using the Curt Echo Bluetooth Brake Controller
  • If you purchased a 4-Way/7-Way Hopkins adapter like part # 37185 so that you can use the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 then you are correct about only needing to connect the 12V power wire for the brake controller (in addition to connecting the typical trailer light circuits and ground). The reverse light wiring is optional and is really only needed if your trailer has a separate circuit for the reverse lights. We actually created the kit # ETBC7L for people who...

  • Wiring for Using a Brake Controller with a 2016 Kia Sportage
  • If you already have a brake controller that connects via 4 wires, like the popular Prodigy P3 # 90195, then you will need a 4-Way wiring harness like the recommended T-One # 118526 and the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. The T-One provides the standard tail light functions from your 2016 Kia Sportage to your trailer and then the ETBC7 kit adds the 12V and brake controller functions as well. Attached is an installation of the T-One on a similar Sportage and the ETBC7 on a Kia Sorento for...

  • Wiring 2016 Kia Sorento to use Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller
  • The Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 will not actually require you use that kit for installation. What you would need to start with on your 2016 Kia Sorento instead is a 4-way connector (if you don't have one), either the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118583 if your '16 Sorento does NOT have the factory tow package or the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118269 if your Sorento DOES have the factory tow package. The install will be different depending on which harness you need...

  • The Curt Echo # C51180 and the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 that you're deciding between are both excellent proportional brake controllers but as you mentioned, their installation, operation, and physical design are all quite a bit different. Between the two options I recommend going with the Curt Echo # C51180 for your application because it will offer an easier installation process and its convenient operation is simply better fitted for occasional towing like you plan on doing. The Echo Smart Control App is free and compatible with an Apple OS that is 8.0 or newer or an Android OS that is 4.4 or newer. • The trailer hitch I highly recommend for your 2018 Toyota RAV4 is the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch # E98864 because it is a bolt-on installation that does not require any drilling into your Toyota's frame. This Class III, 2" trailer hitch has a black powder coat finish to protect it from corrosion and also has a 3,500 lb towing capacity and 525 lb tongue weight capacity - perfect for a small camper. • We currently (February of 2019) don't have an installation video of the Prodigy RF # 90250 on a 2015 Jeep Wrangler but the installation will be the exact same as the other vehicles that we have videos on. This is because the RF installs on the trailer and just requires a 7-Way with the basic trailer lighting functions and 12V power to operate. • The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 is indeed an excellent option for your 2016 Volkswagen Touareg. The concerns you have of the device interfering with the integrated features such as transmission shift point adjustments and anti-sway prevention are valid but not an issue with the Curt Echo. I recommend the Curt Echo brake controller part # C51180 as it's very easy to install and use, but also what's great and unique about this controller is that it's self-contained at the trailer connector.
