Complete Tow Package for 2020 Honda Pilot to Tow 5,000 Camper with Brakes, Hitch, Wiring, Ball Mount

Updated 05/16/2025 | Published 05/12/2025

Question:

I have a 2020 Honda Passport. Should I go with a class 4 if I want to haul a small 5000 camper? What are the part numbers that I would need? Hitch, wiring kit, plug mount, brake module, ball, etc. I see conflicting information between class 3 and 4. thanks

Hello Lewis,

I can definitely get you set up with the correct towing components to get you out on the road to adventure!

You’ll want to check your owner’s manual to see what Honda says you can tow, just because the hitches are rated that high doesn’t mean you should be towing that much weight.

- Hitch: Just as long as your camper is no more than 5,000 pounds, a Class IV isn’t necessary. I would go with our etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit Class III - 2" # e44AR. I really like that our hitch comes in a matte black finish, it gives it that OEM look. If you prefer gloss black, go with # C13421. The hitches are identical (Curt actually makes our hitches, shhhhh, don’t tell anyone), the only difference is the finish.

- Wiring: Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # CU86FR. Lucky for you, your vehicle has a plug-n-play wiring option for a 7-way so there is no need to install the # etbc7.

- Brake Controller: Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller - Dash Knob - Up to 2 Axles - Proportional # RED24FR (this will work for your Passport; I confirmed with Redarc, we’re currently getting our page updated).
You’ll also want the Plug-and-Play Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers # RED39FR (also confirmed with Redarc), and last but not least, the Universal Mounting Panel for Redarc Tow-Pro Control Knob # 331-TPSI-001 perfect for one of those empty spots on the dash.

- Ball Mount: etrailer Ball Mount w/ Pre-Torqued 2" Ball - 2" Hitch - 2" Drop - 7,500 lbs # e67DR.

So, where are you going for your first trip?

Thank you, but I saw a person say I would need a 7-way trailer plug bracket to attach to the hitch. All I see is the universal mounting panel. Where does that go? I don't want to cut any holes in my bumper. thanks

@Lewis Got it Lewis, for that you want the No-Drill Mount Bracket, Long # 18136. This is a no drill bracket to get the 7 way onto the hitch without having to make any holes.
