Question:

I have a 2023 Subaru Ascent Limited with the dealer installed towing package. I am interested in purchasing a Redarc RED44FR brake controller and want to ensure it will be easy to install on my vehicle, and if I need to purchase any adapters for easier installation. Thank you.

Hey Andy! Since you have the tow package on your 2023 Subaru Ascent there is a custom wiring harness available. You will still need the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controller # RED44FR. Then you can use the Curt Custom Wiring # C48RJ along with the Redarc Curt Adapter # 331-TPH-019. This will allow you to plug directly into the OEM brake controller port on your Ascent.

If you want to save a little money, the same two wiring harnesses will also work with the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR. This lacks the "off-road mode" but for most people that isn't necessary.

What will you be towing once the brake controller is installed?

@AndyB sure thing, I understand. I like to give people the option since sometimes they look at the Elite # RED44FR and think the most expensive must be the best. No reason to spend the extra if you won't use all of the features. They're both awesome, definitely my favorite brake controllers, be safe out there and let me know if you need anything else!

@AndyB I have 3 RedArcs in my Tundra,Expedition, and Explorer. You won't be disappointed they are intuitive, adaptive, and responsive. Let alone don't knock my knees anymore with old school style controllers. At least with the Toyota install you can also use the factory "blanks" on the dash to use the RedArc replacement blank for a clean install.

I purchased this controller a year+ ago and it has worked flawlessly for me. I do not go off-road, but I do travel coast to coast and this unit is easy to operate and works well with my 5000 lb. Single axle trailer and my 9500 pound dual axle trailer. I would purchase again if I get another vehicle. One of the caveats for me, I had the dealership install it in my truck when new and was told that unit is covered by my vehicle warranty because the dealership did install it.
