Published 11/03/2026

Question:

Prepping my truck for the purchase of a new camper- truck is a 2026 Nissan Frontier crew cab SV trim- camper is going to be a Forest River Aurora 13RKX with a tongue weight of 277 and empty weight of 2705- need a brake controller that would be plug and play, and Timbren or Sumo spring helpers- I do not know if I need a weight distributing hitch or not. Thank you for your recommendations

Thanks for letting us help John. First off, congratulations on the new truck and trailer! We can definitely help you get everything set up for towing. For the brake controller, I'd recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller with Custom Harness # RED53CR. The included wiring harness is designed specifically for your 2026 Nissan Frontier, so installation should be pretty straightforward. From what I was able to find, your Frontier SV has the factory towing package, which means you will not need any additional wiring components to install the controller. I'll include a video showing a similar installation so you can get a better idea of what's involved. I'd also recommend picking up the Universal Mounting Panel for Redarc Tow-Pro # 331-TPSI-001 if your Frontier has an unused knockout panel where you'd like to mount the control knob. If you don't have a spare knockout, the Universal Mounting Panel # RED37FR would be the better option.

For additional rear suspension support, I'd go with the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs - Rear Axle # SS96EV. These are designed for your Frontier's Crew Cab configuration and will be a great match for what you're looking to accomplish. I like the SumoSprings for your application because they'll help reduce rear end sag and body roll while towing without making the unloaded ride unnecessarily stiff. Compared to the Timbren options, I think they'll give you a better balance between additional support and everyday ride comfort.

As far as a weight distribution hitch goes, I wouldn't necessarily say you need one right away. Nissan's towing guide recommends using weight distribution when towing trailers over 5,000 lbs, and from what I found, your Forest River Aurora 13RKX has a GVWR of approximately 4,200 lbs. I'd start by getting everything hooked up and seeing how the truck sits with the trailer loaded for camping. Pay attention to how much the rear suspension settles, whether the front of the truck rises noticeably, and how everything feels while towing. The SumoSprings will help support the rear suspension, but keep in mind that they don't transfer weight back to the front axle like a weight distribution hitch does.

If you decide you'd like the additional weight distribution and sway control, I'd recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System with 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37060ET. I'm estimating your loaded tongue weight will fall somewhere around 350-500 lbs, which would put you comfortably within the operating range of that system.

Do you already have your Forest River Aurora, or are you planning to pick it up once you have your Frontier set up for towing?

Thank you for your great advice. No, I do not have the camper yet as I want to have my Frontier lined out beforehand. I have put the recommended items in my cart sans the hitch. Most of my towing has been with my 3500 Chevy but it is a bit overkill for an 18' trailer I feel. Thank you again!! j
