Updated 05/13/2026 | Published 05/09/2026

Question:

Just installed the Tow pro liberty break controller in a nissan frountier. Is the controller knob suppose to flash green or blue after install? If I push the button it glows blue for a few seconds. I thought it was suppose to flash green or blue until it calibrated.

Hey Ron. The Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller item # RED53CR will flash blue if it's in sleep mode. It'll be solid blue if your trailer is connected.

If it flashes blue and green that shows that the brake controller is calibrating. You'll want to keep driving normally with your trailer connected until the lights stop flashing. You don't have to brake any differently or press the knob.

If it's breathing/pulsing blue that means the trailer's not connected or the trailer isn't sending a signal back to the brake controller. You'll want to check all of your wiring connections starting at the 7-way connectors. If those check out you'll want to check the connections from the brake controller to the custom harness.

If it's flashing green at anytime that means there's a power issue and you'll want to check the custom harness and your Nissan's tow fuses.

What color does it show when your trailer's connected?

@JerredH, When I installed this on my 2024 Nissan Frontier It took about 50 miles of driving with the trailer attached to finish calibrating. After that it works as expected.

I installed the same item in my 2010 Nissan Frontier (at least 6 or more months ago) and the led flashed ( blue green) for about a half hour then went solid blue like instructions said it would after driving around (without a trailer connected). With the trailer connected it is solid blue until you touch the brake pedal then it turns reddish/purple. It works as advertised and I have the control knob at ate “6” position and the trailer that I pull seems to feel good when braking (no push). I liked this controller so much that I bought a second one for my 2025 Nissan Frontier Pro4x. My 2025 would not calibrate (like I think that you are experiencing) also. I called the company tech support (we did some troubleshooting (over the phone from Australia). What I ended up doing was temporarily hooking up a light bulb (for some resistance (ohms)) to the controller blue wire and ground up under my dash. The controller went into the cal mode ( blue/green led flashing). And after about a half hour or so of calibrating it stopped flashing and Everything seems to work as it should when I tow with my new truck not sure if this helps. Most new vehicles operate off a “can-bus” system, not like my old truck. And that may be why the controller doesn’t respond as described without assistance. I actually spliced into the blue wire up under the dash and left this wire in place (taped up end) in case I ever need to re-cal the controller for any reason.
