Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner.

Once the Tow-Pro Elite is mounted, it will sense - via an internal 3-axis accelerometer - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Tow-Pro Elite Operation

The dash-mountable control knob makes it easy to control your trailer's brakes. In addition to offering fast, simple power adjustment, this knob has an LED indicator that changes color to display different information about the controller.

Redarc Tow Pro Elite Proportional LED Display

While the unit is initially calibrating, the LED light will signal its progress. The LED display will flash green/blue as it seeks to take in information about your vehicle's direction and speed. When the display turns solid blue, the system is set and functioning completely in proportional mode. After this process is complete, the unit will remain calibrated for the next time that you tow. If recalibration is required, it will happen automatically and without LED indication.

You can use the knob to set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, this power is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa. To get more power to your brakes, rotate the switch clockwise. To decrease the power output, rotate it counterclockwise.

Redarc Tow Pro Elite Brake LED Intensity

When you apply the tow vehicle's brakes, a red LED light will inform you that power is being sent back to the trailer brakes. As you increase the power with the control knob, the light will glow brighter, indicating the increased braking power.

Should you want a higher degree of control over the trailer's braking, you can use the control knob to switch over to user-controlled braking mode. To change modes, rotate the knob counterclockwise and apply your vehicle's brakes. Then push down on the remote knob twice (2 times within 1 second) and release the brakes.

Redarc Tow Pro Elite User Controlled LED Signal

User-controlled mode is signaled by a green LED. In this mode, the Tow-Pro Elite will apply your trailer's brakes with the same preset amount of power each time you activate the brakes in your vehicle. While in user-controlled mode, the braking power can be adjusted by turning the control knob in the same manner as when you are in proportional mode.

Having this level of control over your braking is particularly beneficial when overlanding or towing a trailer off-road because you may need to alter the trailer's braking based on the specific terrain and situation that you find yourself in. Set the power low if you're towing through sand or mud so that the trailer doesn't stop with too much force and act as an anchor on your vehicle. When on a steep descent, set the power to a higher level to ensure that the trailer's momentum doesn't cause it to push against the tow vehicle.

The Tow-Pro Elite gives you easy access to manually apply the trailer brakes without using the tow vehicle's brakes. To engage the manual override, just push down on the control knob. This will activate the trailer's brakes, helping you to control its momentum.

The manual override will activate your trailer's brakes differently depending on the mode you have selected. While in user-controlled mode it will apply the brakes at the power level set on the control knob to ensure a predictable braking response. When in proportional mode the manual override will activate the trailer brakes in a light manner, which is great for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.

Simple, Out-of-the-Way Installation

Unlike most proportional controllers on the market, the Tow-Pro Elite has almost no mounting restrictions. It comes in 2 pieces - the main electronic unit and the control knob. Because the only part that you need to be able to access is the control knob, the main unit can be mounted in an out-of-the-way location. So you no longer have to worry about a bulky brake controller scraping against your leg or causing interference with your vehicle's lower airbags.

Redarc Tow Pro Elite Dash Mounted Remote Knob

The dash-mountable control knob can be mounted in a convenient spot that is easy for you to see and access. This can be a blank switch panel, an open area on your center console, or wherever there's space on your dashboard. A universal mounting panel (331-TPSI-001 - sold separately) is available to ensure a clean, from-the-factory look. Custom-fit panels are available for certain vehicles as well.

REDARC Tow Pro Elite Flexible Installation Position

Once you have determined where to mount the control knob, you will want to find a good place to install the main unit. The only mounting restriction for the unit is that the included 3' plug-in cable is able to reach between the main unit and the knob.

Thanks to the 3-axis accelerometer, the main unit can be positioned at any angle. There is also an active calibration feature, which constantly evaluates the direction of travel of your vehicle. This enables the unit to recognize any change in position that may have resulted from potholes or back-country roads and automatically correct itself. Because this feature can read the direction of travel, the main unit can also be mounted facing any direction, allowing for even greater flexibility in mounting.

REDARC Tow Pro Elite Harness

The included wiring harness hardwires into your vehicle's wiring and then plugs directly into the main unit. You can also use a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to cut down on installation time. These harnesses are available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom harness will plug into your vehicle, and the other end will hardwire onto the Tow-Pro harness that plugs into the main unit. Once all connections are made, securely mount the box using screws or double-sided tape. Do not zip-tie the box to wiring or cables that can shift as you drive.

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller. This brake controller is easy to install and operate. It delivers smooth, safe trailer braking no matter the situation. It offers two modes of braking, allowing you to select the best fit for your current road conditions, vehicle type, or driver preference. What you actually get in the box is what I have laid out here on the table. This right here is just a demo model for demonstration purposes today. Again it does offer two modes of braking.

You have proportional or automatic mode. That's designed for highway conditions. It activates the trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. Then you also have user controlled mode for off-road conditions. In that mode the trailer brakes are applied to the level that is preset by the driver, or that is set by the driver. It also features manual override and to do manual override all you have to do is press the knob on the dash mounted switch and you can do that in either the automatic mode, which applies light braking, or user controlled mode, which applies the preset level.

The unit will also remember the last mode you used every time you start your vehicle. Now using a feature called active calibration the unit will calibrate with or without a trailer attached and it constantly monitors the direction of travel. One of the neat features about this system is that the brake controller can actually be mounted in any direction, meaning it can be mounted almost anywhere. It does not have to be mounted on the dash in a traditional location, so that's going to free up a lot more leg room. You don't have to worry about knocking this loose or hitting your leg on it as you get in and out of the vehicle. It can easily be mounted in a location that works best for you as long as it mounted in a fixed position and all the wires can still be connected where they need to go.This right here is the dash mounted control knob.

It puts braking at your fingertips. You'll notice that there's no slide or buttons on the actual controller. This does not take up much space at all. It can be mounted directly to the dashboard, to the center console, or through a spare knockout switch panel. It does require two holes to be drilled out, as indicated in the instructions.

It's a nice clean look once it's installed and again it doesn't take up much space at all.Now this unit is designed for trailers with up to three axles, that would be six brake assemblies. It's designed for use with electric or electric over hydraulic trailer brakes. It is capable of operating 12-volt trailer brakes from 12-volt and 24-volt vehicle electrical systems. The acceptable voltage input ranges between 9-volt and 32-volts.Now I just want to go over some of the basic components of this unit. Again there's two modes. Your modes are indicated, you can tell what mode you're in by what color this LED is. If it's blue, that means that it's in the proportional or automatic mode. If it's green, that means that it's in the user controlled mode. To switch between the modes, you want to make sure that the switch right here is on zero. Press your brakes and press twice. That's going to switch between the modes. Again, blue LED, that means trailer brakes are applied proportionally to the vehicle. The harder you brake, the more the brakes are applied to the trailer. As you push down on your brake pedal, the signal is sent from your vehicle back to the trailer in proportion to the amount that you're pushing the brake pedal. To switch between the modes, put it on zero, brake pedal down. Double tap. Let go. Now green LED means that you're in the user controlled mode. You can set it to whatever level you want. Zero is no braking. 10 is full trailer braking. Then it will automatically send back that amount that you just set. As you press the brakes you'll notice a red LED. That's the braking force, so it's indicated by the LED changing to different shades of red when the brakes are applied. It's very visual as well, so that's another great feature about this system. Then to take advantage of manual override, all you have to do is press the knob for manual override in either the automatic mode or the user controlled mode. With this you're going to get your compact controller, 4" long by 3-5/16" wide by 1-1/8" thick. You'll get the dash mounted control switch, which it has a positive engagement design to it, so you can feel it. You can feel it set into place. You can almost feel the incremental adjustments, so that's a nice reassuring design of the unit. You can push it as well, again that's how you change between your modes. Then it comes with your wiring harness. Plugs into the controller there. It's got the exposed wires on this end and on the casing of each wire. It's labeled with its function. This wire right here connects to the back of the dash mount switch and to the controller.Comes with a quick and easy set up guide. Also goes over those functions with the LED colors that we just talked about. It comes with nice detailed installation instructions that walk you through the entire set up and install process step-by-step. That's going to do it for today's look at the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller.

Installed on 2018 Chevy Colorado Extended Cab Pulling a T@b S Max @ 2800# GVWR Installation was straight forward. About the same difficulty as any other under-dash installation with the advantage that the brainbox can be at any orientation, completely hidden, and inaccessible. Only the small control knob must be dash-mounted. Braking is very smooth and effective. The controller has much finer adjustability than others I have used, and initial set-up is simple. 462658

The Redarc Tow Pro Elite was installed on our 2016 Honda Pilot this was exactly what I was looking for it looks like a factory installed brake controller. Pros: The Redarc Tow Pro Elite was easy to install match the wires with the harness wires and that’s it this is a very nice system .The unit is small which is great gives you multiple options to mount the unit under the dash. Cons: the 90 degree fitting on the Ethernet cable gave me some trouble with installation Operating: To see if unit is operating correctly it needs to be connected to a trailer. Once connected to the trailer apply brake and the system will light up and follow the instructions to setup you unit. 2016 Honda Pilot Installation: I mounted the unit above the emergency brake under the dash there was plenty of room to mount it there .I was able to secure the unit using heavy duty zip ties and industrial two sided tape. I used the recommended butt connectors to attach the wire from the Redarc to the Quick connect wire. Once connections were made the system was all hooked up. FYI on installation :If you ordered the trailer hitch and had it installed from the dealership they should have given you the extra arts from the Kit to install a brake controller. To save a few bucks it comes with a quick wire harness and a 20A mini fuse. The fuse is very important you need to install it in the secondary fuse box under the dash follow instruction from the Kit my system didn’t work because fuse was not installed. Another FYI is when installing the switch reverse Ethernet cable use the straight part not the 90 you run into issues because on the backside there is a metal plate and it wont allow the you to push the switch in all the way and it wont sit flush. 498083

Installed on 2017 Nissan NV 3500 Passenger Van. Straightforward and easy install. I used the factory provided harness and spliced them together. Hint: The Illumination wire on the Nissan harness isn’t used. I purchased the Redarc Universal Mounting Panel to make the install look factory made. Just got it installed. Hooked up to trailer to make sure it was working but haven’t yet went for a trip. Only issue I had was the universal mount has some play (see photos) to the top and bottom so I just centered it for now and later will go back and shim it into the center for good. For me, this product was worth the extra money it costs to have the control box hidden away and not be a “knee-banger”. 503330

Installed the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller in my 2016 Chevy Colorado Attached are the pictures. I put it next to the light control knobs where it could be seen from the drives position through the steering wheel spokes. 499943

Comments

I have installed and used several different trailer brakes over the years, the installation of this unit was easy to moderate, but the operation of the brake system is far superior than other units I have used. I installed the unit in my 2016 Chevy Colorado v6 and did a recent 340 mile round trip, at freeway speed and then up a and back down a, steep at times, mountain highway. Often, I find I have to turn the brakes output force down when I get off a freeway and into town if the brakes have gotten warm and get grabby. I found this unit didnt require this as often, and sometimes not at all, and when it did it was easier to do so. The output knob has clicks you can feel, so you can turn the unit down 3 clicks when you in town and then up 3 clicks when you get back up to speed on a highway. It has numbers on the dial, but bottom line is you dont have to take your eyes off the road to look at it to make the adjustment! I used the Proportional mode for the trip and it was much smoother than my last unit, especially handling the rush hour stop and go traffic didnt get grabby. The ability to switch on the fly between Proportional and User Controlled operating modes worked flawlessly, as I tested it on the dirt road when we got to camp. I did laminate the card they provided on how to switch modes, and put it in the glove box, as it is a 4-step process, and I typically can only remember 2 steps of any processes after about 2 days just me. Also, the automatic parking brake if you stop for a while worked very well and was a nice extra I didnt realize I liked and needed. The fact you can mount the controller Main Unit and the Remote Head Assembly in different places and in any position made the installation extremely nice. Under the drivers kick panel, of my truck, is a metal plate that can be unbolted, so I was able to mount the Main unit on this plate while working on my work bench, much easier! I was also able to mount the Remote Head in a place I could see it while driving. Again, I found this was not as necessary as I thought, because of the click feature, but you need to mount it where you can find it quickly if you need to push the Manual Override Mode button to stop trailer sway. Because I could mount the Remote Head where desired it gives the final installation an OEM look, which is nice and not in the way. The only issue I had was the Remote Head unit I received was faulty. Once I pushed the Manual Override Button in it got stuck and staid that way unless I pulled on it faulty return spring. The manufactures sent a new one right away, and the new one works with no issues. The only sort of hard part with the installation is you have to take some care mounting the Remote Head unit, as you have to drill a large and small hole very close to each other, and the spacing tolerances are very tight. To do this I drilled the large hole 1st. The unit comes with a plastic washer with both holes in it, so I put the drill bit back in the large hole, put the plastic washer over it. This let me use it as a guide to locate and drill the small hole. I had to drill the small hole 1st with and undersized bit, that fit through the small hole. You then have to go back with the correct sized bit and finish drilling out the small hole it has a tab that goes needs to go into the hole.

Installed in a Subaru Outback. Chose to spend a few extra dollars on this unit as compared to others to keep the interior of the car clean and neat. Also, since my wife is short, she was a bit leery that she would bang her knees on a controller mounted in a typical location (happy wife, happy life). This was a tough mount on the Subaru. There is so little free space under the dash and in the engine compartment. Ingenuity was called for. For instance, on the steering column is a metal shelf. However, it was not quite wide enough to mount the controller so I had to first screw a longer shelf to the existing one (a piece of left over hardwood flooring), then mount the controller to that. Sounds easy but because of space limitations I could only use one hand! Took close to a week for my neck to understand I-kink. Finding a way in from the engine bay was another challenge. The videos were extremely helpful, but the mechanic made it seem like a piece of cake. If only. However, trying not to focus on the negative here. The unit is well engineered, works great and keeps the cabin neat and uncluttered. Knowing what I do now, I do not think this unit is something to put in a Subaru unless you enjoy the (lack of) space challenges. The videos are very, very helpful. I suggest watching different ones a few times and taking notes. Each mechanic has a slight twist on how to install, run wires, etc. Thank you e-Trailer! Sadly, I have no pictures to share. Overall, in spite of the challenges I am very pleased with the install and the unit. 500167

Good snowy morning. I installed my brake controller today. 2017 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab I removed one of the 12 volt outlets and used the Universal adapter (fits a bit loose but some electrical tape firmed it up. Controller brick is in the space under the cup holders. 497984

This thing Is very slick!!! Compared to the other controllers I've used in the past this so much nicer. Install is more advanced as I had to take part of the dash apart on my pathfinder to get at the back of the blanks. But sooo much nicer than drilling holes in you dash and banging your knees on this ugly box that is always in the way. This looks way closer to OEM. One great thing is that the box can be mounted any way and hidden. It takes the unit a little while to learn, about 20 brakes or so. My only complaint would be there was no install blanks available for my type of vehicle. So I used the universal which sits over the blank hole instead of flush. This is a minor detail overall compared to the alternative. Over all works very well, looks very slick, and is very user friendly. One thing I really like is how easy it is to adjust up or down on The fly, just turn The little knob. Even if your not looking at it you get a satisfying little click. The only one I would buy now that I have one. Recommended, high quality, and worth the extra money. 515026

I just got this unit installed! Etrailer made it plug and play easy for me by providing the correct pigtail adapter the first time. It took awhile only because I needed to figure out where I was going to locate everything. Once that was decided it went quickly. Reading the directions goes against the “man card” possibly but it was helpful to know how the unit learns its’ orientation. After a short drive with many brake applications it was set to do its thing. Works wonderful and it is really nice to not have a knee knocked under the dash panel!! 515243

I installed this into my 2018 Tacoma. I'm not super mechanically inclined, but this was a very easy install. I looked at an article on an online forum and watched the etrailer video of them hooking it up to the 4-Runner and that was all I needed. I used tthe brake harness adapter that goes from the brake harness into my old brake controller. (Tekonsha 3017P). I connected the wires from the brake controller to the adapter with butt connectors. Everything else was plug and play. I found a spot under the dash and used velcro to secure it. The remote knob fit into the dash no problems. I used their dash plate to mount it into one of the blank spots. I took the truck out with my trailer and everything worked like a champ. I couldn't be happier. No more banging my knees on the old brake controller that was mounted in a crappy spot before. The remote knob looks like it's from the factory. 529272

The etrailer team made this install super easy. I was able to dremel out the stock Tacoma dash blank to make the brake controller fit. The dremel with the right bit works great. I did have a bit of trouble locating the correct connector on the wiring harness but once it was located the rest was a breeze. This product is well worth it. I installed it on a 2015 Toyota 4runner for use with a travel trailer. I decided to go with the RedArc Tow Pro Elite for aesthetics. Installed very easily and looks stock when in Auxiliary location. Traveled 1,400 miles a few days after the install with the trailer and it did GREAT. Couldn't ask for better. The employee's at etrailer were extremely helpful when deciding what product to purchase and shipping was faster than estimated. 495172

ok we will just get this out first....it,s installed....not used yet....if it,s half as good as dan at etrailer said it is ..well my next review will be 4 or 5 stars...but.....the install..was at best....a 3....not that the wiring was hard..it was not (42 years as a mechanic)... distructions....fine...but i dont like anything in metric..this is the US OF A..inches work great....i digress...my problem is the little diel controller it only will fit a thin piece of plastic to mount to..i wanted to use a nice piece of 1/4 inch mahogany..for a nice back plate..nope....they give you no more room then about 1/16 thick to drill and mount to.....and you better have the 2 holes perfect...or no go..if the technology is so good...then make it on a little mounting plate for the US market..we dont have laws on how are dash is to look....my 2 cents 529836

Easy install, instructions are clear and well written. I chose to mount the adjuster dial on the lower center console with a bracket and velcro instead of drilling any holes. the actual unit I mounted with carpet screws to the left and above the e brake pedal. Toughest part was finding the factory harness connection on my 2019 Honda Ridgeline. it is hidden above the ODB port towards the driver door. 544128

Great idea, makes for a very clean look, lets you put the trailer brake control almost anywhere on the dash or console. One does not have to lean down to operate the brake controller anymore. It installed nice in a 2018 Silverado, good thing the box can be mounted in any position, hard to find room under the dash in new trucks. 478028

Product arrived ahead of schedule and was exactly as described and ordered. The mating plug on my 2015 JGC was not easy to find but located it exactly above the parking brake, above other plug ins already being used. Etrailer did send me an email after I placed my order, and I needed to contact them to get the order released for shipping (they needed to confirm information and verify email address)... order was released quickly and sent via UPS which then handed it over to local post office for delivery. Thanks to all involved in getting the product out quickly. RedEArc tow pro connected easily with provided plug (spliced into my JGC connector) , brake controller works as expected, no issues. 543166

outstanding install based on the e-trailer video for a Chevy Colorado; box was placed on the aluminum plate behind the steering column trim panel after 4 holes drilled, using zip ties, and between the plate and the steering column- an easy fit- on the 2018 model, the credit card holder trim is NOT held in with a screw- it pops right off- so you can install the control button as seen in video. Very clean install, looks great used the Tekonsha trailer emulator to test circuits- all fine! 522450

This was a researched and implemented purchase to my 2018 Toyota Tacoma PU! Very satisfied with the installation "look" and functionality. I also purchased the plug and play wire harness that utilized the OEM "Tow Package" wire connection. Would recommend this over the "other" aftermarket units available as this looks factory "I think even better than" what Toyota offers in the Tundra line of units. Suggest if you are in the process of selection view all the [on-line] videos on the unit. Review and study the PDF instructions for familiarity. As an FYI I had the unit installed by a local "Pro" show whom had never seen a Redarc unit. They now want to offer and carry it for customers. 517607

RedArc install on 2008 Toyota Tacoma. The RedArc works great. Clean install without the ugly control box to knock your knee on. Very well constructed. Trial run was a trip from CA to MN through the mountains. Brakes worked smoothly and didn't even know the trailer was there. 492658

Came with a harness to plug into a factory connector, which made installation pretty easy. However.. The knob assembly comes with a template, which is incorrect. Got the hole reamed out so it fits, only to find out the washer that is supplied makes the mounting surface so thick, you cannot mount the assembly. Had to mount without the washer, and you'd never know it. I just installed it, so have not hooked up a trailer to it yet. 474562

Just finished installing my brake control. Installation was easy with a video for my specific truck. Have not had a chance to test the brake control but I am confident it will perform as advertised. Even though this brake control does cost a little more, I like the idea of it braking the same amount of brake pressure that the tow vehicle brakes. At the same time, you can operate the brake manually if so desired. I have purchased numerous items from etrailer and the customer service has been great. They take the time to make sure you are getting the correct product for your needs. I would not hesitant to recommend etrailer. 483310

The controller was received promptly and installed in our 2018 Winnebago which is on a Ford E450 chassis. The control knob was installed in the center of the dash next to the battery jumper switch and the control module was attached to the drivers side of the engine cover out of the way of the drivers legs. It was connected to the factory brake controller connector via the 3040P connector spliced into the Redarc module connector. It was tested by the method described in the manual and so far seems to be working OK. Will not be towing a trailer for some time so can't give any feedback on actual usage at this point. 480818

Installed in 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. Easy hook up to Jeep OEM towing harness. Wire colors were different between Jeep and Redarc but easily matched between the two plugs and documentation provided. Located control switch on shift console with control module dial anchored in location as videos show. Needed to grind down plastic cross hatch stiffener on underside of shift/cupholder console using Dremel tool to obtain a flat surface to mount and anchor the control switch. 547472

Installed in a 2014 Toyota Highlander behind the driver side dash. Used "extreme" double-sided adhesive foam to mount to flat surface rather than screw into something important. Ordered the custom fit accessory button for a factory look. Drove 250 miles over a mountain pass with it - worked perfectly. I like that it is hidden from few accept for the control knob. 558389

Everything was great and led to a very clean install. Note that by being hardwired, there is always a small power draw whereas an externally housed self-contained unit may not. Second, Redarc’s instructions appear to be incorrect in one respect: when the unit is first installed but with no trailer present, it does not pull green and blue while calibrating. 515838

Comments

There will be a small power draw when the vehicle is off to the unit to keep your stored settings. It is not enough power draw to drain the vehicles battery. I contacted redarc and they said that during calibration the unit will pulsate green and blue. Once the unit is calibrated it will be solid blue.

The system works very well, but it's a bear to mount in a Sprinter cab. There just isn't a good place to install the button, and the Sprinter dash is a complex mess. I used the universal adapter and drilled a new hole. Wasn't in exactly the right place, and thus caused significant extra work, but that's not the fault of the product. 566057

Was well pleased with the product and the service. My only suggestion would be that you carry the empty connectors for the Redarc controller so the wires do not need to be spliced to the 3041-P harness, they could be simply crimped in for a cleaner installation. Thank you 542909

For example, if you go with the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller, # 90195, which is one of the top brake controllers on the market, then you will want to use their adapter, # 3016. I've attached an installation video of this setup on a 2017 Silverado for you to check out. If you are undecided on a brake controller...
