Redarc Trailer Brake Controller - RED52VR

Highlights

  • Custom Fit for Your Vehicle: Works with your vehicle's existing wiring.
  • Smooth, controlled stops: Proportional braking matches your trailer to your vehicle’s decel.
  • Clean, factory look: Tiny dash knob blends in while main unit hides behind the panel.
  • Easy to fine-tune braking: Rotate the knob from 0–10 or press it for manual override.
  • Fits tight spaces: Behind-dash mount keeps knees clear and avoids bulky under-dash boxes.
  • Reliable braking power: Handles up to 2 axles with 18 amps continuous output (9–16 V).

Features to know about

Saves Space with Compact Knob: Mounts Behind the Dash

Bulky controllers get in the way, but this one keeps your cab clean. The Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty hides its main unit behind the dash so only a tiny knob shows—just 1-7/8" long and 9/16" wide. It blends right in, like a factory switch, and you can mount it anywhere that’s easy to see and reach. Turn the dial to fine-tune braking power, press it for manual override, and use the color lights to check system status.

Delivers Smooth, Confident Braking: Proportional Control with 3-Axis Accelerometer

The Liberty’s proportional system keeps your trailer braking in sync with your tow vehicle. Its built-in 3-axis accelerometer measures deceleration in all directions and sends matching power to the trailer brakes. Whether you’re easing to a stop or braking hard downhill, both sets of brakes respond together for even, steady control. It works with electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes on trailers with up to 2 axles (4 brake assemblies).

Quick Setup and Self-Calibration: No Complicated Adjustments

Once installed, the Liberty calibrates automatically as you drive. The LED light cycles through colors while it learns its orientation and direction of travel—steady blue means it’s ready. There’s no trailer required for calibration, and you’ll never have to redo it manually; if recalibration is ever needed, the controller handles it on its own.

Clean, Simple Install: Plug-In Harness and Flexible Mounting Options

The included universal wiring harness hardwires into your vehicle and plugs straight into the controller—no special tools or programming required. You can mount the control box almost anywhere within reach of the 3-foot cable connecting it to the knob using screws, tape, or zip ties (not included). A universal panel is provided for a neat finish, or pick up optional custom panels for an exact factory look.

Built for Dependability: High Output and Safety Compliance

With an output voltage range of 9V–16V and a continuous current rating of 18 amps at 12V DC, this controller handles everyday towing with confidence. It meets UNECE R21 and FMVSS 201 safety standards, showing Redarc’s focus on reliability under tough conditions. Once installed, you get smooth stops, a streamlined dash, and durable performance every time you tow.

What is Proportional Braking?

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

This is one of our favorite brake controllers, with flawless braking and a tiny dash knob that looks like it came straight from the factory. It's so easy to adjust your settings or activate manual override.

by:

Great controller, I love the little tiny knob. You don't even know it's there. Everything is automatic. I don't have to touch anything.

by:

whoops other comment should be for this product. The wiring harness is Great

by:

I love it! When it’s installed, all I see is the knob that controls the sensitivity. When you press that knob you override the second sensitivity to apply brakes independent from the set sensitivity. Initial calibration is easy, and it continues to calibrate to the set sensitivity as you drive. This is a unique and very effective brake control system!

by:

I bought the Redarc for my 2025 VW Atlas because the control knob is separate from the cigarette-pack-sized module. A one piece unit would have been in the way of my knees. The Redarc installation looks professional. I hardwired into the VW wiring behind the left foot side panel. The module fit behind the popout panel at the end if the dash. The control knob fit on the fuse box access door.

That is great to hear! I agree those pack size units are not my favorite. I am glad you were able to get this all installed. What kind of trailer are you towing?

by:

Excellent customer service

by:

Installing now, so can't speak to the product itself; but etrailer delivered quickly and customer service is excellent.

by:

Still installing. Didn't come with 30A fuse or circuit breaker.

by:

Very easy install, very functional unit. I installed it close to the fuse box in my 2021 Ford Ranger the day before purchasing a travel trailer. Within the first mile or so, I had it dialed in just fine. Sure beats the older, bulkier units that I used in previous trucks.

by:

I installed this a year ago on my 2021 Tacoma for pulling a 19' airstream. Love the clean installation also. Fit in an open spot on the dashboard.

by:

The Tesla Model Y offers limited suitable dashboard space for mounting a traditional brake controller such as the Tekonsha P3, and most potential locations compromise driver visibility.

The RED52VR, along with its compatible universal mounting panel (331-TPSI-001), provides an excellent solution. The main control unit can be discreetly installed out of sight, while the control knob can be positioned within the driver’s direct line of sight or along the armrest compartment for easy access and optimal visibility.

I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to the eTrailer sales representative for recommending this outstanding product.

by:

It went well overall but why isn’t there and an adapter for a 2023 Jeep Gladiator it looks like you have one on your website but all that was available was the Universal one. Also still waiting to get it installed.

by:

Not impressed so far. Unit took quite awhile to "learn" it's position. Only towed about 15 minutes with it. Then, 2 weeks after installation, my tow vehicle brake lights started to flicker when the car was off. No trailer attached. Lock the car, walk away, 30 seconds later all 3 brake lights flickering a half second every 2 or 3 seconds. Wired correctly and grounded. Was fine for 2 weeks. Will update after warranty replacement.

by:

Just installed; was not complicated but is challenging to do for the first time. Couldn't conceal the module since it required being secured well as the dash area was too tight to fit a screwdriver in so I had to mount it externally. The dial is not easy to install in certain factory bezels but after a few hours of modifying the bezel I got it to fit well (recommend mounting on other flat plastic panel instead). Dial design takes some time to figure out. It's a good design, but a bit weird. Couldn't tell if it calibrated since you won't know unless trailer attached while driving, but have confidence it did as it's made in Australia instead of China. Couple minor omissions in the instructions: Electric brake diagram is missing "white" wire description and the positive (black) wire is marked as 2 GA when should say 12 GA wire. I wired the + cable from rear to under hood access to battery with 30A breaker and a second breaker on the battery (under driver's seat) going to the module. There are more options than they say for power source, but you do need direct 10 or 12 GA (depending on length) to the 30A fuse/breaker (breaker preferred) close to the battery or battery access terminal (either under hood or in cab depending on battery location).

by:

Love this brake controller. The nicest part is that you don't have a huge controller showing on your dash, just a simple little knob.

Have the same controller on another truck and it works great.

by:

The only reason I did 4 was because the kit has you drill two holes, it mentions a template for drilling but none was included. I had to use the measurements in mm and pick a bit because it detail what size. Start small. Where I installed the switch there is some reinforcement that I had to dremel to get it installed but this the location Ford indicated. 23 Ranger Tremor.

Thanks for going into detail with how your installation went. This is really valuable to have for future readers with the same truck and it give a great idea of what to expect. :)

by:

Installation was about what I expected . . . a couple of hours cramming my body into too small a space. LOL

Fortunately, the etrailer video was EXCELLENT and kept me on track. The unit is working perfectly!

My only recommendation to people who are thinking about a truck and towing with it: BUY ONE WITH AN ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL ALREADY INSTALLED! If it's too late for that, go with the Redarc Liberty (light truck, light towing) or the Redarc Elite (heavy truck, heavy towing). You will not be disappointed.

by:

Works well on our 2025 Hyundai Palisade for towing our T@B320s camper. Easiest way to install was just drilling a hole in the dash door to the fuses (see photo). Our trailer is so small & lightweight that I often don't notice any need for a brake controller, but on that rare occasion of a quick downhill stop at a traffic light, it helps keep the trailer under control.

by:

I recently installed the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller (with Universal Wiring Harness and Dash Knob) in my 2004 GMC Yukon XL with the factory tow package. The install was straightforward, just as I expected it to be. Mounting the dash knob was easy, and I secured the main controller on the inside of the knee/kick panel with a few short screws — very clean and out of the way.
I had previously installed the same controller on my 2023 Toyota 4Runner and really like the way it performs. The proportional braking is smooth and responsive, and the dash knob makes it simple to adjust on the fly. It integrates perfectly with the factory tow wiring on the Yukon.
If you're looking for a reliable, well-designed brake controller that’s easy to install and works great, this is a fantastic choice. Redarc did it right!

by:

when looking for a brake controller etrailer was the only place I considered for this purchase. After looking at the numerous options I focused on the Redarc as the it had the most minimal footprint, fit my needs and exceeded my expectations.

I am very pleased with this item and always pleased with etrailers wide selection of quality products and helpful and informative website and staff !

by:

Good product but installation on my 25 Highlander was a bear. Running the wires through the Firewall where Trevor posted it on the YouTube video was impossible. I had to punch a new hole through the firewall behind the battery and don’t even think about hooking in at the brake light switch, go to the red wire on the 4 way converter.

by:

I bought this to be able to tow our family camper with our 2017 Highlander. It worked great. The installation, while over all easy, was kind of a pain at times. Also, for the price, in my opinion they should include the breakers, electrical connectors and fittings, various sizes of zip ties and self tapping screws needed to correctly install it.

by:

After a year, I've had no issues at all with this wired controller. Local place did the install and did a great job. Space for the dash knob was tight, but they made it work. Easy to use and dependable. Shipping was fast.

My TV is a 2020 Toyota Highlander XLE, and I'm towing a 3,500 pound Airstream.

Highly recommend!

by:

One of the best controllers, that doesn’t look big and ugly or catch your leg, under the dash. We added it to our 2024 Hyundai Palisades and the controller sits on the right side of the steering wheel, on the lower knee panel. Takes a few minutes to for the brain to its gain it’s actual orientation and then you can connect your trailer and adjust. It’s singular light strobes between a few colors, to tell you it’s still learning. Once solid blue, it’s done. For emergencies, you simply push the single knob in and brakes are applied smoothly. These have been proven both effective and durable in the Australia n outback and are a favorite for many overlanders. Toyotas and other vehicles can order button covers, to allow install in the dash, for a clean look. Great little unit

Looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing the photos of your install, too. What do you tow with the brake controller?

by:

Chevrolet owners.. I put this on my 2019 Chevy Express 3500 (it’s a Gulf Stream Conquest RV). Nowhere in the instructions or the phone call I made to etrailer before purchasing warned me that the brake switch in a Chevy express will not support this brake controller (or any controller). Tapping into the yellow signal wire on the brake switch will result in a check engine light and a transmission code stored. The correct way is to run the brake signal wire to the under hood fuse box. The cold side of the brake aux fuse is the correct location and you’ll need a mini-fuse buddy to tap into it safely. Other than small-ish detail, it’s a fantastic controller. Works great to stop my enclosed trailer.

by:

2026 Subaru Outback Touring XT. The Redarc Tow-Pro is a super nice Brake Controller. It works well and the overall installation is really clean. No bulky controller hanging from the dash. I do like the self calibration feature, It makes setting it up a breeze. I mounted the controller underneath the dash on a flat surface. Out of sight, out of mind. In my case, it was plug n play. Subaru provided a factory connection point (circled in Red) for the brake controller. I had to purchase the OEM trailer hitch wiring kit from Subaru part #H771SAR00. This came with everything I needed to make everything work.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for 2022 Keystone Springdale Mini 1750RD
Hey Michelle! There are definitely a lot of different weight distribution hitch (WDH) options out there. The most important thing is to make sure it is properly rated for the tongue weight of your setup. Looking at the specs for the 2022 Keystone Springdale Mini 1750RD it has a dry (unloaded) tongue weight of 520 lbs and a GVWR of 4,400 lbs. Tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight so at the high end, fully loaded, you're going to be around 660 lbs. For occasional,...
