Updated 05/12/2025 | Published 04/25/2025

Question:

I have a 2015 Nissan Frontier King Cab, SV, 4x4, V6, AT, factory tow package, 26,000 orig. miles. Looking to tow a travel trailer, 3600 UVW, 4420 GVWR, 490 hitch weight. Can you recommend: 1. Brake Controller 2. WD / sway control hitch 3. Extended side mirrors OEM style if possible 4. Any other pertinent components I may need? Thank you, Brad

Hey Brad!

Appreciate you reaching out. Looks like you’ve got an awesome setup with the Frontier and that trailer low miles too, that’s sweet!

I’d recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite part # RED44FR for your brake controller — it’s super clean because it's just a little knob on your dash and works awesome for normal towing or even rougher roads. You’ll also need the plug-in adapter part # 3050-P to make it plug straight into your truck’s tow package without splicing anything.

For weight distribution and sway control, check out the Equal-i-zer 4-point hitch # EQ37060ET. It’s a beast and it has sway control built right into the head and spring bars. That means you are preventing sway before it happens. A lot of customers love it for long trips, heavy loads and highway crosswinds. Now keep in mind, this system is designed for 200-600 lbs of tongue weight. Is the 490 lbs you mentioned the loaded tongue weight? You always want to go off the loaded tongue weight when choosing a WDS.

There isn't an OEM slip on towing mirror available for the Nissan Frontier that I know of. The most popular option of towing mirror for the Frontier are the K-Source Clip on mirrors part # KS3990. We have positive customer reviews on these from other Nissan Frontier owners.

It sounds like your Frontier has the hitch and wiring but you may consider a ball mount kit part # 989900 just cover your bases.

Let me know if you want me to help line up anything else, happy to help get you road ready!

Heather, Thank you for these recommendations. I don't plan on getting the travel trailer for another 6 months or more, so I will definitely consider the Equal-i-zer hitch at that time. I do plan to install a brake controller in the near future. I had noticed the Redarc units on your website, and I do like that they are unobtrusive. I really appreciate your input and will likely be ordering from E-Trailer soon. Sincerely, Brad Wivell

@BradW Good morning Brad! Thank you for getting back to me. Yes, the Equal-i-zer is really popular a lot of customers have told me it basically eliminated all of the sway on the highway. Let me know when you are ready to decide on a brake controller and we can go into all the options and what will be best for your situation. Just out of curiosity, what travel trailers have you been checking out?

@HeatherA Hello Wendy, So I looked into the Redarc controllers and it seems like the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty, PN-RED53CR, should be the right unit for my Frontier.? Let me know if that's not the correct one. My wife and I did visit a local RV dealer and we came away with one particular unit that we liked best; Grand Design, Transcend One, model 151RB. I believe my Frontier will handle this trailer well, with an appropriate set-up of course! Nissan rates my truck at 6300# towing capacity and 630# tongue weight, so I think we'll be good with this unit. Thanks again, Brad

@BradW The Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness item # RED53CR, is 100% the right one for your 2015 Nissan Frontier. It includes the brake controller and plug in play wiring harness. The factory provided brake controller connector is located under the dash near the top of the e-brake pedal. Nissan will typically put a white tag on the harness that the connector is attached to, making it easier to locate. For a clean factory looking install, I recommend picking up the Universal Mounting Panel for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controller Control Knob item # 331-TPSI-001. This will allow you to install the control knob in one of your Frontier's knock-out panels, making the knob look like another accessory switch. Now that is a cool looking trailer! At just over 4,400 lbs it will definitely work with your Frontier. The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System item # EQ37060ET is definitely the correct capacity for it. It looks like you have plenty of space to move around that propane tank set up for the brackets as well. Let me know if you need any additional help with your towing set up.
