Simplify Towing Setup: 3-to-2 Wire Tail Light Converter

Connecting your tow vehicle's separate brake and turn signal systems to your trailer's combined setup can be a hassle. Fortunately, the Hopkins Tail Light Converter seamlessly merges the two systems, making your wiring compatible with typical trailer light configurations. Whether you're dealing with incandescent or LED bulbs, this converter handles it all.

Ensure Signal Reliability: LED Compatibility for Modern Setups

With trailers increasingly adopting LED lighting due to their brightness and longevity, having a compatible converter is a must. The Hopkins Tail Light Converter is designed to work with LED systems flawlessly. This ensures signals remain bright and clear, enhancing visibility and safety during your travels, regardless of your vehicle or trailer's lighting type.

Video Transcript for Feature Breakdown: Hopkins Tail Light Converter

Michael: Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at the Hopkins Tail Light Converter. This is going to adapt your vehicles independent brake lights and turn signal functions into a single brake and turn signal for your trailer. It's going to work with most of your common trailer tail light lighting. It's going to work with LED and incandescent lights on your vehicle, so you don't have to worry about that.

It is pretty compact. Let's see, it's only about three inches long, and close to about two and a half inches tall. It's going to fit easily within your vehicle, whether you want to store it in your trunk or behind your tail light housing. Now, the thing about this that I will tell you is it is not the simplest converter that I have seen for vehicles. It is going to require you to cut into your vehicles wiring. If that's not something that you are comfortable with then we do have many different options for your taillight wiring here at etrailer.com.

I would recommend you search for plug-in vehicle wiring harness in our search bar, and find one that's going to work for your vehicle. It's going to be a lot easier. You can just plug it into your tail lights and you're not going to have to do any cutting. But if you are up for a little bit of trimming and splicing this can work for you. You're going to put the four.. Sorry, five end of the converter into your vehicle.

Your white is going to be your ground obviously, your brown is your tail lights, your yellow is your left turn, your red is your brake, and your green is your right turn signal. You'll splice the wire going to your lights for those functions. I would also recommend while you're buying this to go ahead and pick up some heat shrink butt connectors to make those splices. You can find them here at etrailer using part number DW05744-10. You'll put the line coming into your tail lights.

You'll put one end in the butt connector, and then put the line going out to your taillights and to your converter, and the other end crimp the butt connector down. You can heat shrink that if you're using one of the heat shrink butt connectors to help protect your connections. Then over here, you'll do pretty much the same thing for your 4-pole flat connector. It's not included in this kit. You'll have to pick that up separate. If you don't already have one we do have them here at etrailer.com as well. You can use part number HM38138 to find that. You'll again, make your connections, put your butt connector on both ends, crimp those down, secure your connection there. You do want to be sure that you test your wiring for the function, and you don't just go off of the color, because sometimes trailers are wired in a way that is not going to be compatible with the wiring that's here. Make sure that you are sending your white to your ground, your brown to your tail lights, your yellow to your left turn, and your green to your right turn on your trailer. This is going to be capable of a maximum power of 2.1 amps per outlet. That's going to give you about two bulbs, so you'll have one bulb for your stop and turn, one bulb for your. Sorry, one bulb for your right stop and turn, and one bulb for your left stop and turn. Any more than that you are going to need a power converter. This converter does come with a 90 day warranty from Hopkins. That's going to complete our look at the Hopkins Tail Light Converter.

It’s still working like it should . A vital part to turn existing tail lights into signal lights

by:

The tail light converter is a must have if you plan to add brake and turn signal lights to your RV or Trailer. It allows a single light to convert the signal from a brake light to a turn signal and vis versa.
When you can’t seems to find a common or unique RV, trailer or vehicle part, you can bet etrailer will probably have it.

by:

Works very well and very robust quality, thanks.

by:

I bought a trailer light adapter and two 1157 light sockets to convert two empty tailight lenses on my motorcycle. This gave me two extra lights on the back of the bike. Extra tail/brake/turn signals gives much better visibility.

The converter allowed an old trailer to upgrade to LED lights. Brighter and integrated turn and tail. A year later still going strong.

  • Troubleshooting 7-Way to Semi 7-Way Adapter Stoplights Not Working
The problem you most likely are experiencing is due to fact that semi trucks have the turn signals and stoplight circuit on separate circuits/wires. Standard trailer wiring has the stoplight and turn signal circuits on the same wire. So in your situation you would need to wire in the Hopkins Tail Light Converter part # HM48847 on just the stoplight and turn signal circuits and you'll be good. A brake controller would not affect the stoplight circuit at all.

  • Converter Needed for Installing RV Style 7-Way on Vehicle with Round 7-Way
Hey Jean, on heavier duty vehicles like what you have the trailer wiring will have the stoplights and turn signals on separate circuits. So since you are also trying to wire in a RV style 7-way that needs those circuits combined what you would need is a converter like the part # HM48847 that you can use to get those circuits on the same wires and it should take care of your problem. It does sound like the current dedicated stoplight circuit is ran to your brake output circuit which is...

Hi Forrest; because of the way an agricultural 7-way is wired the # PK12-724 is not a good solution. The best thing you can do is run a 7-way blade and connect straight to the trailer. Right now you don't have a brake output pin and it sounds like 12V power is carrying over so the brakes are constantly activated. Also, your tractor will have separate brake light and turn signals which won't work with the Big Tex trailer. To accomplish this you can use the # 337TC1474P along with the #...

  • Converter for Wiring a 3rd Brake Light on a Trailer
Hey Paul! The Hopkins Tail Light Converter item # HM48847, you were looking at, will definitely work with LEDs. However, you need a 2-to-3 wire set up and this is a 3-to-2 wire. Since your trailer uses a combined wiring system where the stop and turn signals run on the same circuit, in order to add a third brake light to your trailer you will want to use the Curt 2-to-3 Tail Light Converter item # 118158. This will convert the wiring to a separate system which would allow the third brake...

Yes, you do Grant but it's not plug in. I recommend the Hopkins Tail Light Converter item # HM48847. This converter will need to be wired in line of your 2006 GMC Sierra 2500's 7-Way. It doesn't have a 4-way connector. To add a 4-way connector to your 2004 Volvo S60 you'll need the Hopkins Active Tail Light Converter with Install Kit item # 46255.
