Welcome to an entirely new towing experience. The Curt Echo brake controller puts you in control of your trailer's braking with mobile, Bluetooth operation. The portable unit installs in seconds and allows you to make braking adjustments straight from your smartphone. Easily transfer the Echo between vehicles and store it when it's not in use.

Simple, Fast Setup

Curt Echo Plug In Brake Controller

With no wiring, modules, or knobs to install, setting up the Curt Echo is a breeze. Just download the Echo Smart Control app on your Apple or Android smart device and follow the in-app instructions. The brake control unit plugs into the 7-way at the rear of your vehicle and provides a port for plugging in your 7-way trailer connector. When all the connections are made, wirelessly pair the unit to your phone via Bluetooth. Once the unit is paired, configure your desired trailer brake settings in the user-friendly app.

See etrailer.com's exclusive 7-way upgrade kit for brake controller installation (ETBC7L - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Echo Smart Control App

The Echo Smart Control app is free to download and use. Scan the QR code included with the Curt Echo or search Echo Smart Control in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Curt Echo Manual Control

The custom-designed app allows you to control brake settings, calibrate output, and monitor all braking activity with the touch of a finger. If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override function is easily accessible in the app. Press and hold the large orange circle to manually activate your trailer brakes.

The app will also alert you in the event that your trailer is overloaded or becomes disconnected during travel. Should your smart device ever lose connection, the Echo will default to the settings of the last profile used. So even if your phone battery dies, you can still count on getting proportional trailer braking as long as the unit is in use.

There's no need to worry about missing a call or running multiple apps either. The Echo Smart Control app will continue running in the background if you get a call or switch between apps, and it will not interfere with your vehicle's hands-free multimedia system.

Create Multiple Vehicle-Trailer Profiles

Vehicle Trailer Profiles

The app has the ability to sync up to 5 Echo devices, and the memory function allows you to save unlimited vehicle-trailer profiles. This makes it easy to transfer the Echo between towing setups. This convenience, along with the plug-and-play design, makes the Echo perfect for either occasional towing or commercial fleets.

Weatherproof Construction

Curt Echo Features Diagram

Because the Echo is made to be outside the vehicle, it's engineered for maximum weather resistance. The unit is filled with an epoxy resin that seals off the internal components from moisture and the elements, ensuring long-lasting operation despite rain, snow, dirt, mud, and more. The Echo also has a soft locking tab for connecting to your 7-way RV-style plug. This tab helps to reduce vibration and improve connectivity.

LED Status Indicator

Curt Echo Diagnostic Indicator

A single LED on the body of the Echo shows the status of the brake control unit so that you can easily troubleshoot any problems that may arise.

Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner.

Once the Echo is installed, it will sense - via an internal 3-axis accelerometer - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Toyota Echo

My daughter ordered a Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controler from another dealer and it appeared to be faulty. I contacted eTrailer to confirm my diagnosis and they were very helpful and confirmed that the controller was faulty. As we were in a time crunch to get the trailer brakes operational, I ordered a new controller from eTrailer and it worked as advertized - easy setup and control plus three families can use the same controller instead of having to have 3 separate controllers. Only issue is that it took over a week for them to ship the controller even though they showed it in stock when I ordered it.

Comments
My daughter used the controller to tow her LARGE pop-up trailer nearly 4000 miles last summer and I used the same controller to pull a separate large trailer 150 miles across a hilly interstate to help a friend move. In both cases it worked perfectly.

I used this kit to convert an OEM 4-way flat connector to a 7-way on a 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Easy, straightforward install. Only issue I ran into was that I had to elongate the kit mounting bracket holes to use the existing bracket holes. etrailer provides excellent written and video installation instructions.

This controller works great. Rubber strap doesn't hold very well. I just replaced it with a velcro strap. S imple solution. Etrailer was great answering my questions and getting my order shipped quickly.

We purchased a new Hyundai Palisade that had an OEM hitch and “prewiring” for trailering. Unfortunately this prewiring was only a 4-pin connector so it did not include wiring for controlling electric trailer brakes. We finally convinced the dealer to install a 7-pin connector - if we obtained the appropriate parts from etrailer.com. George J. at etrailer.com recommended this kit (#ETBC7) as the parts we needed for conversion to a 7-pin connector. The car dealer’s service department installed the 7-pin connector while we waited for 5 hours. With a wireless brake controller, everything now works properly for towing our Casita.

This photo shows the installation after I modified it so that the connector was above the hitch instead of below it (too close to the ground). I had to fashion a bracket for appropriate spacing and I left several bolts that attach it to the etrailer.com bracket (oops).

I have used this controller to travel cross country, even in inclement conditions. It has one crack in the housting, but it works great. I also like the phone app.

Overall thoughts can be summed up as, “Not overly wowed for the price.” For 1, the rubber strap was extremely cheap and broke the 1st use. This is an issue because the controller itself fits fairly loosely in ALL my receivers which is another issue as well. All 3 receivers are new and all 3 are name brands, 1 being Curt, so I can only conclude it’s the controller itself. For the price there is absolutely 0 reason Curt could not spring on a quality strap or assure a snug fit in at least their own receivers. If I had not been paranoid of it falling out to begin with and added extra bungies I would have lost $xxx controller 1/2 way to the destination. 2nd because it fits loosely it can lose connection periodically when going over a bump, sharp turn, and etc. You know those times when you might want to actually have a manual control? 3rd the manual override brake is finicky at best. It may or may not engage when hit the 1st time. It may or may not engage quickly. It may or may not engage at all. Lastly the blue tooth signal could be stronger. If not moving it does okay in the front seat of the burb but if I’m walking around the trailer or ect it loses the signal, which for me isn’t much of an issue but would certainly be if I was using in an RV since it will lose signal at around the 12ft mark. All in all I doubt I would repurchase it for the current price, vs going through the hassle of wiring in a designated controller to whichever vehicle I plan on towing it with. Couple that with the fact you MUST remove at every stop due to the design, or risk someone who actually knows what it is walking off with your $xxx controller. This is also something that could have been addressed rather cheaply for the price of the controller by something as simple as a metal loop and wire setup, but I was aware of this issue before purchase. The concept is nice, and it does broaden the options on who I could let tow my trailer if I needed to borrow a vehicle or etc if mine went down on the side of the road, and not everyone has the know how to wire their own controller so price could be negligible for them. Time will tell if it pays itself off for us, curt warranties it for life so it may very well pay itself off in time, but in my mind for most folks there are better and cheaper options. All I can say is do your research and weigh the cons and pros before you buy. Seems like a slightly below average functioning controller at the cost of considerably easier to install with multi vehicle use. Works okay for me, but I'm hauling a camper used a few times a year. I certainly wouldn't want to be someone who hauls regularly and constantly be connecting and disconnecting at all my stops. So as I said, it’s not junk but its also not the “wow” I expected from the reviews I read and price I paid.

This does have a limited lifetime warranty but the strap is not included in that as it is a wear and tear part. You can pick up a replacement strap here at etrailer: item # C28HR
Replacement Strap for Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller
$12.98
. Also, the manual output can be activated by pressing and holding the orange button in the app. If you simply tap the button, it will not work properly. Make sure that you are holding down the button for as long as a duration you need.

Toyota Highlander

My Toyota Highlander 2020 can’t be adapted to add a wired brake controller (unlike the Toyota truck). However, the wireless brake controller works well and easy to configure. My daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids borrow my trailer and use the same wireless brake controller (so no need to buy 2 brake controllers for 2 vehicles). Easy to install on my iPhone and configure and easy to test with manual brake controls.

Comments
A year later and the wireless brake controller is still performing well and loaning it to family members for their trailering is easy too. I get worried that the controller might fall off so I use a zip tie to help secure it to my vehicle.
Russ - 05/20/2022

by:

This unit is genius. You can use it for multiple different vehicle and trailer combinations. Works well with smart phone and has all the control of a permanent mount unit. If you think the price is high just realize that if your vehicle doesnt come with electric brake capability, most newer vehicles are $xxx.xx plus to have it installed. I would suggest this brake controller to anyone who is looking.

Comments
Great unit for a 25 foot boat to a 19 foot camper. Works flawlessly every time. And even if your phone dies it will still work with the settings you had it on. One year later and still loving it.

etrailer has always been my first and only stop for my trailering and bike rack needs. They have been very good to work with in the past so I don't shop around. It took a long time to receive this order. I was advised be etrailer staff that they are having warehouse help issue, Then I get this controller and it was DOA, the LED wouldn't even light up. I called and now I am waiting for days for an RMA number so I can return it and get a refund. At this point I ordered a P3 controller and got one from [online] in 2 days. I would have stiil ordered from etrailer but they advised it might be slow to receive. But I could pay extra to get fast expiditing. Sorry I am not paying extra becuase etrailer has a problem. If I can get an order in 3 or 4 days I am happy. The whole deal set my project back 2 weeks and been a bad experience. Once I get the RMA and return this I am done with etrailer until they get their act together.

Bought this a year ago to use when towing my Epro 19FBS camper. Downloading the App to use with it was easy enough and had no trouble with the unit linking to the app. I’ve used this with a 2020 Jeep and a 2019 Dodge Ram. What I have found is that it’s hard to get it balanced to match the braking of the vehicle. Lot of times a slow speeds it tends to make the trailer brake grab hard. At road speeds it seems better. You can use the cell phone to use the trailer brake alone. I’ve played with the sensitivity and gone through resetting multiple times to no avail. It is convenient and works if a fixed type controller is not on your list. No issues with the controller with lights, turn signals and such. May go to something else down the road but right now just tolerate it.

Comments
The first thing I would do is check your wiring grounds starting with the trailer brake wiring, just to be sure nothing is corroded or damaged. Next, check your trailer brakes and make sure that they are not out of adjustment.
-- Etrailer Expert Sierra K - 05/10/2022

by:

Overall very good - controller connects the app quickly every time, and you can easily confirm it's working. Adjustments are pretty straightforward, and once you get the sensitivity dialed in for your setup, you can save it in a profile. Braking performance seems very good, and inspires confidence. Once in the car, it occasionally loses the bluetooth signal, but this does not affect the braking, it just retains the settings and runs off those until you connect again and make an adjustment (but once set up for that trailer you don't really need to make adjustments). Every time you start the app, you have to "Tap to Accept" 3 or 4 warning screens which is kind of annoying, but that's life in America.

Comments
The Bluetooth connection may be lost. One may be that the phone is not receiving the signal if its possibly a phone that has seen better days and may get intermittent signals sometimes. The other is that it may not fully be seated in your 7-way or the trailer plug may not be fully seated in the Echo when it is connected, or possibly signal interference from other Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices, so you may try turning those off if you have them. As you have mentioned, the braking system is not affected by the bluetooth signal being lost.

2012 GMC Sierra

This has made pulling my horse trailer a dream. My old truck had the brake unit in the cab at knee level and was in the way and difficult to adjust. This is a "plug N play" unit that is very much worth the extra cost. The ability to adjust the brakes according to foot pressure is a great help.

This is a break-through product. I am currently using it on three(3) vehicles as needed. It is wonderful to not have to buy and install three(3) controllers.

It is easy to install and move among my vehicles. The app works well on my Samsung SmartPhone and is easy to use.

The braking control is excellent and the force and sensitivity adjustments allow for safe and effective braking over a broad range of loads and driving conditions.

It's not perfect as it will occassionally require re-pairing. It seems to forget the connection to the SmartPhone under certain conditions. However, it re-pairs quickly and this is not a big deal.

I am delighted with this product.

2011 Ram 1500

I purchased this product for use with my travel trailer(the folks at etrailer shipped it really fast) as my new truck didn't come with one and I didn't want the hassle of installing a wired one, and wasn't wild about having something else under the dash. The setup was very easy. The app downloaded quickly on my phone and paired immediately with the controller. I double checked that the braking function on the phone was actuating the trailer brakes (it was). I haven't pulled my trailer with it yet,but my initial impressions are that it is good quality, is easy to use, and so far has done everything as advertised. I woulf recommend watching etrailer's instructional video on YYoutube.

I just received the wireless brake controller so my experience using it is still little, however it was very easy to setup. It took about 2 minutes to plug in and get setup once the app was installed on my phone. I pulled my trailer around the block and worked to setup the sensitivity and it seems to work flawlessly. I like how I can setup multiple profiles for my different trailers. I lease my truck to it is nice that I don't have to install wiring and install the controller onto the dash of the truck knowing I will most likely turn it in at the end of the lease

by:

This was so easy to use! The videos were a great source of inspiration, having not ever used a 7 pin connector before and about to tow a trailer a few hundred miles for the first time!

by:

If you tow a trailer and don't want to hack up you brand new rv dashboard this does the trick. You don't need the break controller that you aways kick with a knee. Or looks out of place. It's Bluetooth through the phone and works even if you lost phone signal. There is aways room to improve the unit but right out of the box thus is a nice unit.

by:

The only reason I didn’t give this product a higher rating is we found out, after the fact, that the controller doesn’t allow a charge to our RV battery like a regular plug does. That should be made ;more apparent in the specs of this product. While there can be rewriting workarounds to this, those weren’t satisfactory options so it is causing us to move to a different brake controller. The operation of this controller, otherwise, is excellent. Simple to use, simple to hook to your phone and worked great with our trailer. Unfortunately we need our battery to be working and charging as we travel since we go “off grid” often. If that’s not a concern of yours, this is an excellent choice.

Comments
We have researched this question with Curt. They advised that the circuit is only rated for 30 amp peak. The constant amp rating is lower but they am not sure what that number is at this time. With the potential of overheating the unit while charging the battery they would not recommend it.

I do not use with my phone.
I purchased
because a local shop quoted me $500 to install a brake controler on my RV.
And I also needed one on my Toyota 4Runner.

Well for the price of this unit, which I keep handy for both vehicles - I'm not ready.
Purchased a 16 foot enclosed trailer 7.5K pound rating with duel axles and it works great.

Only one axle has the electric brakes.

I dont believe my unit had teh rubber strap, so I just use a zip tie.
I keep them (short/long ones) in my tool box.

I used the wiring harness and 7/4 pin receiver from etrailer to wire my 2021 Toyota Highlander to use the Curt Echo. It worked flawlessly the first time. So far I haven’t needed to make adjustments from the original settings for my R-Pod 180 travel trailer. I do wish there were better instructions for initial set up.

A GREAT product! I use this for a 20ft. Carson enclosed trailer I tow with a Tesla Model Y. This solved the whole issue of installing a brake controller in the Tesla, as it simply plugs into the trailer wiring connector and pairs with my iPhone. My phone app acts as the accelerometer and the screen is a big red button that applies the brake if you need to. But, the accelerometer braking is smooth and steady and worked perfectly right out of the box in just minutes! This also allows me to have brakes if I want to use another vehicle to tow with, I just plug it in to that vehicle. THANKS CURT & etrailer.com!

This brake controller saved us a lot of headaches. Last year while in Houston TX for the winter our Chevy Colorado was totaled. Trying to find another one to replace it was a nightmare. Our old one had the heavy duty tow package with built in brake controller. We searched a 300 mile radius around Houston to find one with 4 wheel drive ( we live in northern MI ) and what we got was this one, basic truck. it did have a light tow package but no controller. I found this one, so I didn't have to do any wiring. Down loaded the app. to set it up and it works GREAT. The only thing I did was added a zip tie with the rubber strap. We are pulling a 4800lb. Travel trailer.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado

Product works completely as described. Easy to add a controller to ANY vehicle that has a 7 point trailer plug like my 2018 Chevy Silverado (no factory brake controller but has a prewired 7 and 4 point trailer plug) or my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Trailer is a 2 axle CargoMate. App was a bit hard to find on the AppStore (iphone). Search "Echo" not Curt then it comes up. Set up is quick and easy to modify if necessary with load changes. App does not need to be normally running if you don't need to apply brakes manually. But if you do need to apply brakes, the response is surprisingly fast through the Bluetooth communication. No delay whatsoever. It doesn't interfere with other apps running either. I like to use navigation and stream music from my iphone 8. Only real issue I have with the product is that its not lockable. Very easy for someone who knows what they are looking for to just unplug and run. I parked overnight at a hotel and didn't realize it until the next day. Got lucky that it didn't get stolen, but now I'm aware and take it off when done towing.

This brake controller has worked well, and meets all of my expectations. I have had many different brands of hardwired brake controllers in the past and this one works as well, is easy to set up, and has given me trouble free performance for about 6000 miles of towing in the past year.

A year in, I've used it multiple times, and love it.

We use it on a minivan towing a trailer, and I didn't want a bulky box all the time.

This plugs in simply, works well on it's own, and the smartphone app works as well. Plus there's no installation work/cost.

Highly recommend.

The difference between sensitivity and max output for the Curt Echo brake controller part # C51180 is that max output is the max braking power the controller would put out if it felt like it needed to apply them as hard as possible. So this needs to be the setting that gives you the max braking power before the tires of the trailer lock up. Sensitivity is how reactive you want the controller to be to vehicle braking. Once you set the max output you then tweak this setting so that the trailer...

  • Compatibility of Curt 51180 Echo Brake Controller with 2013 Ram 1500
The Curt Echo # C51180 would work great on your 2013 Ram 1500. As long as the 12-volt feed to the 7- way trailer connector (pin in the 1:00 position) is active, the controller will work perfectly. You'll need a iOS (v 8.0 or higher) or an Android (4.4 or higher) equipped smart phone to act as the display module. I'll link you to a product description video that explains how the Echo works.

  • Does the Curt Echo Operate in Rural Areas
The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller - Wireless part # C51180 does connect to your phone via Blue tooth connection which does not require cell service or WIFI so you will not have any issues with the Echo in rural areas. In the unlikely event your phone would lose connection to the Echo it retains the settings and would still function too. The only time you need WIFI or service is when you download the Curt app during the setup. The Curt Echo is compatible with an Apple: IOS 8.0-newer...

  • Do Incoming Calls Interrupt Braking With Curt Echo
An incoming call will not affect the braking of the Curt Echo Brake Controller part # C51180 in the Kia Sorento. The Curt Echo will still be operating in the background. However, you will not be able to use your phone with a Bluetooth device like your vehicle's media system or a headset because the Curt Echo is paired via Bluetooth. If you take a phone call on the actual phone it won't cause any issues.

  • What Amp Breaker Should be Used When Installing Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller
You should change your breaker to a 30 amp breaker when installing the Curt Echo Mobile # C51180. 40 amps is good for protecting more than two axles but if you have a tandem axle trailer you'd want the breaker to trip at draws above 30 amps so that it protects the wiring/circuits.

  • Brake Controller That Will Not Take up Room in Cab of 2018 Toyota Tundra
The brake controller that will take up the least amount of room in the cab of your 2018 Toyota Tundra is the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 because it won't be in the cab of your Tundra at all! The reason for that is the Echo is a wireless brake controller that you set up and use with your smartphone (it will require Apple: 8.0 or newer OR Android: 4.4 and newer). The Curt Echo will simply plug into the 7-way on the back of your Tundra and once you download the Echo's...

As of this writing we have not had any reviews from customers who have used the Curt Echo # C51180 trailer brake controller with a 2018 Audi Q7 but there is no reason why it would not work due to sensors. The Echo uses a Bluetooth connection and thus far there have not been any reports of any type of interference; you are perfectly safe to use the Echo with your '18 Audi Q7. I have added links to video reviews of this brake controller for you to take a look at, as well as a link to the...

  • Can Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller be Used on Three Axle Trailer
The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 should not be used with more than four brake assemblies in order to maximize the braking power from the controller. If you want the controller to only activate the brake assemblies on two of your axles you would need to cut the brake wire to one of your assemblies. This should only be done if the remaining four brake assemblies are rated high enough to properly brake your trailer.

  • What Positions Can Prodigy RF Brake Controller be Mounted In
I attached a picture that I got from Tekonsha that lists all of the mounting locations for the RF # 90250 that they recommend. As long as the box is sitting level and the cable is pointing towards the front of the trailer though you'd be okay to mount it on the interior of a trailer.

  • What Does Low Voltage Error on Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller Indicate
If the app is telling you "low voltage" that means that the vehicle battery (what the controller draws it's power from) has low voltage. That would indicate that the battery is possibly bad and can't hold a charge or your alternator is not able to charge the battery. The Echo # C51180 does not have an internal battery so that would not be the issue. You can usually take vehicles to a local car parts store and they can test the charging system to determine where the issue is.

  • Will the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller Work With An iPhone 4S
The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 will work with both iPhones and iPads. That said, these devices will need to have an IOS of 8.0 or newer. Since you said your iPhone 4S has an IOS of 9.3.6 it will work just fine with the Curt Echo. The last I checked, the iPhone 4s is the oldest iPhone that can be used with the Curt Echo so you are in luck. The ECHO Smart Control App requires 7.2 MB of space for installation as of August 2019.
