Welcome to an entirely new towing experience. The Curt Echo brake controller puts you in control of your trailer's braking with mobile, Bluetooth operation. The portable unit installs in seconds and allows you to make braking adjustments straight from your smartphone. Easily transfer the Echo between vehicles and store it when it's not in use.

Simple, Fast Setup

Curt Echo Plug In Brake Controller

With no wiring, modules, or knobs to install, setting up the Curt Echo is a breeze. Just download the Echo Smart Control app on your Apple or Android smart device and follow the in-app instructions. The brake control unit plugs into the 7-way at the rear of your vehicle and provides a port for plugging in your 7-way trailer connector. When all the connections are made, wirelessly pair the unit to your phone via Bluetooth. Once the unit is paired, configure your desired trailer brake settings in the user-friendly app.

See etrailer.com's exclusive 7-way upgrade kit for brake controller installation (ETBC7L - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Echo Smart Control App

The Echo Smart Control app is free to download and use. Scan the QR code included with the Curt Echo or search Echo Smart Control in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Curt Echo Manual Control

The custom-designed app allows you to control brake settings, calibrate output, and monitor all braking activity with the touch of a finger. If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override function is easily accessible in the app. Press and hold the large orange circle to manually activate your trailer brakes.

The app will also alert you in the event that your trailer is overloaded or becomes disconnected during travel. Should your smart device ever lose connection, the Echo will default to the settings of the last profile used. So even if your phone battery dies, you can still count on getting proportional trailer braking as long as the unit is in use.

There's no need to worry about missing a call or running multiple apps either. The Echo Smart Control app will continue running in the background if you get a call or switch between apps, and it will not interfere with your vehicle's hands-free multimedia system.

Create Multiple Vehicle-Trailer Profiles

Vehicle Trailer Profiles

The app has the ability to sync up to 5 Echo devices, and the memory function allows you to save unlimited vehicle-trailer profiles. This makes it easy to transfer the Echo between towing setups. This convenience, along with the plug-and-play design, makes the Echo perfect for either occasional towing or commercial fleets.

Weatherproof Construction

Curt Echo Features Diagram

Because the Echo is made to be outside the vehicle, it's engineered for maximum weather resistance. The unit is filled with an epoxy resin that seals off the internal components from moisture and the elements, ensuring long-lasting operation despite rain, snow, dirt, mud, and more. The Echo also has a soft locking tab for connecting to your 7-way RV-style plug. This tab helps to reduce vibration and improve connectivity.

LED Status Indicator

Curt Echo Diagnostic Indicator

A single LED on the body of the Echo shows the status of the brake control unit so that you can easily troubleshoot any problems that may arise.

Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner.

Once the Echo is installed, it will sense - via an internal 3-axis accelerometer - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

2016 Subaru Forester

Worked very well the minute we set it up and got it paired. It was hard to tell if the trailer was responding since it appeared to pull and stop very evenly from the very beginning. I used the ETBC7L 4 pin flat to 7 pin converter kit. I connected the black power cable to the battery and hooked up the ground and BINGO it worked. It was a lot of work to get the black power feed cable from the controller to the battery but once it was all connected the controller just plugged right into the 7 pin adapter and the trailer plugged into the controller. I did have issues with it losing connectivity to my phone but that didn't seem to stop it from working. Great service from the folks at trailer. I paid for two day shipping and it arrived in two days in great condition. I bought the controller and the 4 pin to 7 pin converter kit together.

One year later and its still performing like a champ! I love this brake controller. Its simple. Safe. Plug and Play. I find myself not pairing it with my phone since the controller works just fine on its own. Plus, while Im driving I am not going to be checking my phone to access the manual inputs for the controller. Its automatic so I just let it do its thing and it works seamlessly. LOVE THIS PRODUCT!

I have been very pleased with this though there is a dearth of information in regards to the adjustments. I had a problem with the brakes "locking up" when in traffic and ended up using very light settings so they would engage smoothly. Another thing I could not find is with my car, the unit sits at about a 45 degree angle, I could not find anything that noted if this would be good or not. The plus is I changed tow vehicles without having to add the controller.

Thank you for your review. The Curt Echo can be installed in the 7-way plug at any angle and still operate properly. We have tested it on vehicles with 7-ways orientedangled in all different directions and it has performed well.
-- Etrailer Expert Heather A - 06/19/2020

pretty good, though sometimes the connection is difficult to obtain. There has been a time or two where it just did not engage the breaks when I hit the button on the screen or used the pedal. This is rarely and fortunately I have a relatively light trailer in relation to me TV.

It works well. However, first time out, it disconnected from the auto plug in socket and was severely scuffed while dragging on the pavement. The weight of the unit, it’s added length to the socket, and the pull from the trailer cord all added together to cause it to disconnect. Good thing, it was not functionally damaged and still works normally. I now wrap a strong rubber band around it to insure the catch will not release the unit I’m also considering installing a Velcro strap around the unit for added security.

Still works wel. As I said, I wrap the two catches with Velcro and heavy rubber bands to prevent inadvertent disconnect. I also retired trailer connect to allow adequate length for connection due to special hitch. Would like to see better stronger latches to hold connection due to heavy unit leverage on connector.

I just got a new company vehicle that didn’t have a brake controller installed. I needed to make a trip on Monday morning with a 14 foot tandem axle work trailer. I ordered the controller Friday afternoon and it arrived Monday morning. I plugged it in and went through the setup in about 5 minutes and it worked perfectly. The easy installation and phone app control is exactly what I needed to make the trip on time!

2018 Chevrolet Silverado

Product works completely as described. Easy to add a controller to ANY vehicle that has a 7 point trailer plug like my 2018 Chevy Silverado (no factory brake controller but has a prewired 7 and 4 point trailer plug) or my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Trailer is a 2 axle CargoMate. App was a bit hard to find on the AppStore (iphone). Search "Echo" not Curt then it comes up. Set up is quick and easy to modify if necessary with load changes. App does not need to be normally running if you don't need to apply brakes manually. But if you do need to apply brakes, the response is surprisingly fast through the Bluetooth communication. No delay whatsoever. It doesn't interfere with other apps running either. I like to use navigation and stream music from my iphone 8. Only real issue I have with the product is that its not lockable. Very easy for someone who knows what they are looking for to just unplug and run. I parked overnight at a hotel and didn't realize it until the next day. Got lucky that it didn't get stolen, but now I'm aware and take it off when done towing.

Been a year and 1000s of miles of towing ... still working great!

I have used this controller to travel cross country, even in inclement conditions. It has one crack in the housting, but it works great. I also like the phone app.

- C51180

I have a 2020 VW Atlas. This makes it super easy and no drilling required. The only thing is that VW programming only allows you to test for voltage or if your 7 pin connector works if you have a trailer plugged in. So if you have a buddy that has a truck that you can plug into to to set up Bluetooth prior to use then ask your buddy to use his connection. Other than that it’s pretty rad

Still great no issues

2018 Toyota Echo

After owning the Echo Brake Controller for a year now, we were finally able to use it for a long distance trip this past March when we trailered two heavyweight motorcycles in an enclosed trailer from New Jersey to Florida. In a nutshell, it worked perfectly. The app is easy to use and the directions are simple. The Echo syncs up right away to your phone's bluetooth and once underway, adjustments can be made quite easily. I have a new car and the last thing that I wanted to do was drill holes in my dashboard to mount an older, wired unit. I read about this echo control, however, I was very skeptical about the technology, as was my trailer hitch guy. Therefore, I called etrailer before buying the Echo. I don’t recall who I talked to, but he fully explained the technology, including the fact that once the trailer and echo were connected, I could toss my phone out the window and the controller would still work because it remembers and maintains its last setting and does not need to be synced to a phone to operate. I took a leap of faith and placed the order. I’m pleased I did. I highly recommend the Echo Brake Controller.

I remain very pleased with the Echo brake controller. It’s very easy to use and I’m confident that it will continue to function perfectly. As others have stated the locking mechanism does not always feel totally engaged. Therefore, I devised a strap that holds it tight in the socket. I highly recommend the Echo brake controller.

Dodge Ram Pickup

This product allowed me to avoid adding a wired brake controller to the dash of our Telluride. It does work, but I found it tricky to adjust to work well with brakes on our 22’ Airstream (single axle). It does work but despite my best efforts at adjustment, the trailer brakes would grab when approaching a red light unless I pumped the brakes to get a smoother stop. I would definitely get this again under the same circumstances, but we now have a new Ram 1500 with integrated brake controller that was super simple to adjust and works very smoothly.

- C51180

The Curt Echo works as described without any wiring on the tow vehicle. It does have a few rough edges though. First, if it doesn’t get initialized correctly, it can brake far too aggressively resulting in rough stops and hot trailer brakes. Second, it seems to have a slight time lag again resulting in the trailer bumping around in the hitch receiver. Even when configured right, the brakes seemed to run hot. I’ve since moved to a wired proportional controller and its noticeably smoother. The echo was sold.

2013 Chevrolet Equinox

The Curt Echo Wireless trailer brake controller has worked great on our daughter's Nu-Camp "teardrop" trailer. Using the Curt Echo eliminated the need to run a wire to the engine compartment of her 2013 Chevy Equinox, and mounting a brake controller on the dash. We used an old Iphone no longer in service to set up and control the Echo, and it works fine. Setup was very easy, the controller applies the trailer brakes smoothly, and it feels like the combination stops even faster with the trailer attached than with the car alone. Works great! Sometimes, but not always, it is necessary to pair the Iphone and controller if it's been awhile since using them, but it only takes a few seconds to do so.

2015 Chevrolet Silverado

My 2015 Silverado and 2014 Escalade didn't have a factory brake controller. Was considering hardwiring one for each vehicle until I found the Echo. For the same price as two controllers I got this. Not the cheapest option but for the convenience this is the the way to go. Very easy to configure for both vehicles and didn't have to waste any time hardwiring.

- C51180

I purchased a 2002 38’ motorhome thats dod not have a trailer brake controller. Based on what i saw on online videos i was sure this would work- Sadly the bluetooth is not powerful enough to reach the drivers area. I even upgraded my phone, hoping it would connect- The phone receives the signal for apx 25 feet. I have asked several sources about a signal boost but so far there does not appear to be one for this type of Bluetooth signal

1999 Toyota Echo

Was only going to give 4 stars because I've only used it to tow my travel trailer to the DMV, but I got to the end of my review and found it's worth 5 stars. First impression is EASY EASY. Just plug it into the 7way jack, plug your trailer into the Curt Echo, pair your phone, and you're good! I held down the brake actuator button and the trailer stopped the whole rig. Happy I went this route. Installing in the cab would've been an extra, totally unnecessary pain. Spend a little extra and save yourself a headache, and more holes in the dash.

- C51180

This unit is genius. You can use it for multiple different vehicle and trailer combinations. Works well with smart phone and has all the control of a permanent mount unit. If you think the price is high just realize that if your vehicle doesnt come with electric brake capability, most newer vehicles are $xxx.xx plus to have it installed. I would suggest this brake controller to anyone who is looking.

- C51180
Toyota Echo

My daughter ordered a Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controler from another dealer and it appeared to be faulty. I contacted eTrailer to confirm my diagnosis and they were very helpful and confirmed that the controller was faulty. As we were in a time crunch to get the trailer brakes operational, I ordered a new controller from eTrailer and it worked as advertized - easy setup and control plus three families can use the same controller instead of having to have 3 separate controllers. Only issue is that it took over a week for them to ship the controller even though they showed it in stock when I ordered it.

- C51180

Use them everyday for customers buying new campers, hardly ever do the plug and play brake controllers anymore unless the older folks want the old school style. Love them, great support on them if you have any questions, Curt has great customer service.

- C51180
Toyota Highlander

My Toyota Highlander 2020 can’t be adapted to add a wired brake controller (unlike the Toyota truck). However, the wireless brake controller works well and easy to configure. My daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids borrow my trailer and use the same wireless brake controller (so no need to buy 2 brake controllers for 2 vehicles). Easy to install on my iPhone and configure and easy to test with manual brake controls.

Pontiac Trans Sport Van

I ordered my brake controller with a very narrow window of opportunity to receive it. I needed to pick up a boat in Minnesota and needed trailer brakes to transport. Etraiker assured me we would get it, and it did come in time. I am amazed on how well it works, and the ease of setting it up to be controlled by my cell phone. Thanks for following up, George

- C51180

I really love this controller. No need to wire every vehicle I have or will have. I just need the 7-pin hookup and I'm good to go. Very simple to use and to connect to my phone. I highly recommend this one.

It works great! No additional wiring needed. Just plug it in, connect to your phone. Done.

- C51180

Works great and super simple to use. I set it up with the app when it arrived and haven't had to mess with it since, as it remembers your settings. Well worth it and saved the expense and hassle of having a trailer break installed. Plug it in, attach the camper plug, and away we go!

- C51180

I needed this for the trailer behind the fifth wheel. And it has been working awesome. Does loose it’s blue tooth but still make the brakes work as I had it set.

- C51180

Excellent product! Ive driven several thousand miles to locations and I boondock my tiny Vistabule teardrop trailer 100% traveling some bumpy roads. Despite my neglect, leading to my running over the Echo with my Suby Outback, slightly cracking the housing and breaking off the door this baby has never failed to perform.

- C51180
Toyota Echo

Works as advertised. I owned a Jeep Gladiator and could not have towed my travel trailer without the Echo (at least not with the additional time and added expense of wiring in a brake controller). I purchased an F350 so I no longer require its use, but I will not sell it because I can use it on other vehicles. Definitely worth the purchase price.

Purchased new Ram 1500 2 mos ago. Did not have Brake controller. Called dealer to have one installed. Was told they !re back ordered for 3 months. Told me they can't put me on a waiting list - will just have to keep calling to see when they arrive. Went on to etrailer for a solution and found this one. Amazing. Set up in minutes. Works great. Can use for my truck and move to my RV when towing!

  • Comparing the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7 and the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit # ETBC7L
There are a few differences between the Universal Installation Kit part # ETBC7 and the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit part # ETBC7L. The biggest one is that part # ETBC7 comes with both the power and brake output wire you will need to run to the cab/battery whereas the part # ETBC7L only comes with the power wire you will need to run to the battery. The reason for this is because part # ETBC7L is geared more towards wireless brake controllers like the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part...

  • 7-Way Adapter Kit for 2020 Kia Telluride to Install Curt Echo Brake Controller
That definitely is a 7-way mounting bracket at the rear of your 2020 Kia Telluride which the 7-way adapter part # ETBC7L could easily attach to and would be what you need to install and use the Curt Echo # C51180. You'd just need to plug in your 4-way into the adapter and then run the power wire up to the vehicle battery and you'd be set!

  • Parts Needed To Add 7-way Connector And Trailer Brake Controller To 2021 Toyota Sienna
I would be happy to recommend everything you will need to add a 7-way connector and trailer brake controller to your new 2021 Toyota Sienna. First you will need to have a 4-way connector installed of which I recommend the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C59236. With a 4-way connector installed there are two different 7-way connector options. The first is the # ETBC7 with a traditional trailer brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 #...

  • Compatibility of Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller on 2020 Subaru Outback XT
The Curt # C51180 Echo would indeed be compatible with your 2020 Outback, and of the available controllers it would be the easiest to install. The Echo plugs into a 7-way trailer connector and would use your smartphone (iOS 8.0+ or Android 4.4+) as the user controls. Since you already have a functioning 4 pole trailer connector, you'd just need the # ETBC7L install kit. The kit includes an adapter to convert your 4 pole into a 7-way and the hardware, wire and circuit breaker needed to connect...

  • How To Wire Brake Controller and 7-Way Plug In 2020 Hyundai Palisade
The Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195 needs to be wired to the cold side of the brake light switch which is normally located near the brake pedal. You would need to test the wires at the brake pedal for the wire that only shows power when the brakes are applied using a circuit tester like part # PTW2992. That is the wire that you would attach the red wire from coming from the brake controller. I have attached a diagram that shows how to wire the 7-way plug and brake controller into...

  • Parts Needed to Install Curt Spectrum Brake Controller in 2020 Jeep Gladiator
We have an easy way to install the Curt Spectrum in your 2020 Jeep Gladiator but the install harness you mentioned was designed for the Ram trucks and would not fit your Gladiator. So the harness you would want is the part # 3073-P which the gray end will plug into the factory connector on your Jeep and once you cut off the black connector will wire color for color to the wiring of the Spectrum # C51170. At this time (April 2020) there isn't a harness from Curt that fits your Gladiator.

  • 4-Way to 7-Way Adapter Recommendation for Installing Curt Echo Brake Controller
If your plan was to install a brake controller you'd have to also run the black wire of the 7-Way Adapter part # 30717 to the to the positive post of your vehicle battery as well as the ground you mentioned. The Curt Echo part # C51180 that you referenced needs the black wire to power it and then uses the other signals from the 4-way adapter to tell when the vehicle brakes are on. For a different adapter that comes the extra wire and breaker to activate the needed circuit for the Curt...

  • Best Brake Controller for Towing On and Off Road with Jeep Gladiator
Our experiences with the Curt Echo Mobile part # C51180 is that it works really well and does not have any issues with bumps causing braking issues. Now if the plan is to mainly do off-road towing where there will be quite a bit of bumps a strictly proportional brake controller is not the way to go as you'll get some minor false braking triggers for the controller. The best solution for that is the Tow Pro Elite part # 331-EBRH-ACCV2 which easily switches between proportional when towing...

  • Easy to Install and Use Brake Controller Recommendation for 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe
The Curt Echo Mobile brake controller # C51180 is a really good solution for you as it's very easy to install on vehicles that aren't pre-wired for brake controllers like your 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe and you end up with a really great performing brake controller. To convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller only requires the 7-way adapter kit part # ETBC7L. The 4-way of this plugs into the 4-way of your vehicle and once you run the included wiring and breaker...

  • How To Use and Wire Curt Echo Brake Controller on a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee
In order to use the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 on a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee you'll want to use the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation part # ETBC7L. The 12 volt power wire which is used to power the brake controller and charge the trailer battery will still need to be run to the battery. Therefore, you can indeed power the brake controller and charge the trailer battery at the same time. The benefit of the Curt Echo is not that...

The Draw-Tite Class III hitch you referred to, part # 75152 is a confirmed fit for your 2013 Volvo XC90, as is the Tekonsha # 118411 powered taillight converter. The # ETBC7L provides an adapter that converts the 4 pole provided by the # 118411 into both a 4 pole and a 7-way, as well as 20 feet of 12GA wire, a 30 amp circuit breaker and all the necessary hardware. • Brake Controller and 7-Way Adapter for 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon
So the easiest to install brake controller that also works really well is the Curt Echo Mobile part # C51180 which I would recommend highly for your 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon. Basically this just plugs into an active 7-way and once you sync it to your phone it's ready to go. This brake controller is proportional which means it senses the amount of deceleration your tow vehicle is applying and applies the trailer brakes in a relative way. To convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can...

  • Will the Curt Echo Work On a 2019 Volkswagen Atlas
In certain cases, some vehicles like your 2019 Volkswagen Atlas do not send a full 12 volts to the trailer connector which then creates an issue for the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180. We have not yet had a chance to test this yet therefore, if you want to be sure it will work before you order you can probe the 12 volt power pin in the 1 o'clock position on the 7-way trailer connector to make sure there is a full 12 volts of power, if there is you will be good to...
