One-Step Installation

The Curt Echo is unique for its plug-and-play installation. With no wiring, modules, or knobs to install, setting up the Echo is a breeze.

Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller Installation

The main unit plugs into the 7-way at the rear of your vehicle and provides a port for plugging in your 7-way trailer connector. Use the included strap, found inside the cap, to secure the Echo in place. It will help ensure a constant connection between vehicle and trailer.

That done, download the OneControl app on your Apple or Android smartphone and wirelessly pair the unit to your phone via Bluetooth, following the in-app instructions. It should take about 5 seconds for them to pair. Once paired, the LED light on the unit will turn a solid blue. Plug in your trailer's 7-way and let the whole system calibrate for another 5 seconds. When the LED turns green, configure your desired trailer brake settings in the app and save it as a profile. Then you're ready to tow!

Note: See etrailer.com's exclusive 7-way upgrade kit for brake controller installation (ETBC7L - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Control Your Towing with Your Smartphone and an App

Besides the crazy-easy installation, the Echo is unique for giving you control of your towing through your smartphone. You can set the maximum braking output, adjust the braking sensitivity, apply the manual override - all from the OneControl app.

Completely wireless, the Echo connects to the app via Bluetooth. You can save multiple towing profiles in the app, a big plus if you have a fleet and want to be able to just select a pre-set configuration and get towing. And don't worry; after you've downloaded the app, you don't need to have data on to use the app with the brake controller. You'll be able to receive calls and texts and access your other apps.

User-Friendly OneControl App

Simple, intuitive, and user-friendly, the OneControl App makes it wicked easy to manage your settings and control your trailer.

how does the One Control app work

1. Manual Override

This big orange button in the middle of the app is your manual override. Press and hold the button, and the brake controller will smoothly apply the trailer brakes without applying your vehicle's brakes. This is perfect for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in an emergency.

Curt Echo App Manual Override Button

Quick tip: Put manual override right at your fingertips by adding this button (C83HR - sold separately) to your dash. The app must be running for the button to work, but it can be in the background while you use other apps on your phone. The button has an adhesive pad for a quick-stick installation and includes an easily replaceable battery.

2. Brake Output Indicator

The outer ring gives you a visual indicator of how much power is being applied to the trailer brakes. This is determined by your max output setting.

3. Max Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop.

To set your maximum braking output, tap this button and increase or decrease using the + and - buttons. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change.

4. Sensitivity Level

This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the max output level. This is a great adjustment to make when you're towing a heavy load and the trailer will need more umph to bring it to a stop so it doesn't push your vehicle forward.

Just like max output, if you need to change your sensitivity level, use the + and - buttons. If your vehicle takes too long to come to a stop, increase the setting. If it stops too abruptly, lower the setting. You may also need to adjust the sensitivity based on your own preferences, or when the trailer load or road conditions change.

5. Vehicle Hazard Lights

If you turn on your vehicle's hazard lights, there's a chance the trailer brakes will pulse on and off as the lights flash. Turn this setting on any time you activate your hazard lights to prevent this problem.

Save Multiple Trailer Profiles

Curt Echo App saves multiple trailer profiles

Get on the road faster by saving your settings. With the app, you can add and store multiple profiles for both trailers and vehicles so that your preferred settings will be ready to go as soon as you hook up. This is perfect if you own a fleet and don't want to have to reset the controller every time you swap out trucks, trailers, or drivers. You'll have the ideal settings saved and waiting for you. To switch between profiles, just swipe left or right.

OneControl: One-Stop App for Towing

If you like the idea of monitoring your trailer from your phone, the other OneControl systems could be a great fit for you.

The Curt True Course (C94VV - sold separately) is an advanced Bluetooth sway control system that automatically triggers the trailer brakes (independent of the vehicle's brakes and the brake controller) when it detects dangerous trailer movement. The Curt Tire Linc (C54VV - sold separately) Bluetooth TPMS monitors the temperature and pressure of your trailer tires. All of these systems use the OneControl app so you can manage all of them in the same place on your phone.

LED Status Indicator

troubleshooting Echo brake controller

The LED indicator light on the top of the plug-in module will show you when the brake controller is connected. You can also check the LED for simple diagnostics when you need to troubleshoot.

Weatherproof Construction

Is the Curt Echo weatherproof

Because the Echo mounts outside the vehicle, it's designed for maximum weather resistance. The unit is filled with an epoxy resin that seals off the internal components from moisture and the elements. The Echo also has a soft locking tab for connecting to your 7-way plug that reduces vibration and helps ensure a constant connection.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Curt Echo brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

The Echo uses an internal 3-axis accelerometer to sense how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to ensure that your trailer slows at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

I like the fact that I have a proportional brake controller I can stick in my glove box. It doesn’t have to be hardwired to the vehicle which is nice because I can use it on different applications. This one is definitely a plus over time delay brake controllers.

Comments
After an initial issue and replacement, the product has worked very well. Having an adjustable proportional controller that you can throw in your glove box is pretty handy. It’s response time is very quick.

The Echo is a convenient trailer brake. It's easy to set up and use every time I hook up my trailer. I use Bluetooth from an old smartphone mounted to the left of of my steering wheel so I can keep my cell phone free.

The only problem is that the rubber strap kept getting un latched from the rubber pin. So I just use two bungee-balls to keep the ECHO connected to the car harness and the trailer plug. (see Photo)

Fantastic / effortless! I drive a Volvo XC40 and needed the most minimal, non-intrusive brake controller I could find. All you need is the corresponding app, you pair this controller to the app via bluetooth, and configure it (just 2 settings for trailer brake output & sensitivity) and you're good to go. No need to rely on the app during driving at all, the brake controller stores the settings and just does its thing without you needing to look at the app or have it open. It's handy for testing the brakes, there is a button on the app where you can virtually press the brakes, so I stand by my trailer brakes, press the button, and test that I hear them engaging - super convenient since I do setup alone. Safety features ensure that if the phone loses connection, the brake controller just keeps working. Super happy with my purchase.

Product has still been perfect 1 year later. It just works every time, Ive used it for towing in a dozen+ trips and its been perfectly doing its job without issue.

Easy set up. Very smart brake controller. Brakes only as needed, and is very adjustable. I was skeptical about these proportional brake controllers (they use an accelerometer to sense how fast the towing vehicle is slowing down), but I am a believer now. Only thing to check: make sure your 7 pin connector’s auxiliary 12V is connected to at least a 20A fuse. The product says it needs to be connected to a 30A breaker, but I don’t think you’ll find many vehicles where that’s the case. 20A seems standard, and in my case more than enough. I am not sure is 20A May be a problem for those needing to brake two axles though. Worth looking into that before buying the controller.

Comments
Still enjoying using this wireless blue tooth controller. My only gripe is that the little rubber strap that comes with it is too flimsy and does not lock in place. I got rid of it.
Aris - 08/14/2023

by:

As long as you follow the directions for hooking it up precisely, it works marvelously. Especially, if like us, no OEM brake controller was available for our Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I give it a low rating, however, because it is made very cheaply. Just from regular use (plugging it in and unplugging it), the unit cracked, and then after 1-2 more uses it completely fell apart. See the pictures.

I wanted to let you know that the controller does have a 1 year warranty and I have sent the warranty return instructions in a separate email to you.

2022 Ford Bronco

Picked up my teardrop in ABQ on 2/17/23, and the Echo was easy to mount and sync to my phone, and worked flawlessly the 175 mile trip home. I also got my longer 3-way curt ball mount from etrailer, and it is a beast and also worked perfectly!

by:

I just received the wireless brake controller so my experience using it is still little, however it was very easy to setup. It took about 2 minutes to plug in and get setup once the app was installed on my phone. I pulled my trailer around the block and worked to setup the sensitivity and it seems to work flawlessly. I like how I can setup multiple profiles for my different trailers. I lease my truck to it is nice that I don't have to install wiring and install the controller onto the dash of the truck knowing I will most likely turn it in at the end of the lease

Comments
I have had the wireless brake controller for about a year now, and I have to say it has worked flawlessly. It connects to my phone each time without fail also. It is a bit more expensive than a wired controller but in my opinion, the ease of use and ability to use in different vehicles makes it well worth the investment.

This Bluetooth enabled controller has worked well over the last year. It’s fast to instal and the portability between vehicles is a nice feature, especially if you plan changing your tow vehicle in the near future. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is that I don’t like the rubber strap that secures it to our 7 pin connector. The metal pin can fall out and I often worry the device will become disconnected or fall out when I’m driving, although it warns you on your cell phone when this happens. Having a dash mount for your cell phone is a must to use it properly.

Comments
After two years it’s still working well. I’ve had some issues getting it to connect properly when I first install it, but I think this is due to corrosion on my cable and not the controller itself. I would still buy it again. It’s a quick solution if your vehicle is not equipped with a brake controller. My fears of it falling out while driving were unfounded. I’m getting better at using the rubber fastener. Although, I still think a better way of securing the devise would improve the product.

When this arrived I opened the box and did not have any packing material to cushion the contents inside to prevent damage. The right side of the controller was cracked open (screw missing) and one of the pins inside is bent. I was able to repair the damage on the side. Have not plugged it in to see if it works.

Initially wouldn’t connect to iPhone but after uninstall/reinstall of app it was fine. After literally traveling around the entire US I have to say it was a blessing with plug-and-play simplicity and total control over braking parameters. The phone lost Bluetooth connection a few times while traveling but the controller maintains the program so no big deal. For me it was nice to see the braking rate on the phone graphic. GREAT PRODUCT! 5 stars!

by:

I used the wiring harness and 7/4 pin receiver from etrailer to wire my 2021 Toyota Highlander to use the Curt Echo. It worked flawlessly the first time. So far I haven’t needed to make adjustments from the original settings for my R-Pod 180 travel trailer. I do wish there were better instructions for initial set up.

by:

Item worked great for the first 8-10 months on our Jeeps. Lately, it has been hard braking at slower speeds. We have reset the unit several times, and sometimes it fixes it, but we will start to do it again after a while. Not a safe team long-term solution, especially using it for a camping trailer and dealing with hard braking coming down a mountain.

Comments
I agree that braking power is a must. I reached out to Curt and they suggested the following: unplug everything, give it a few seconds, you will probably see a blue flashing light come on, then plug in the trailer. This will most likely fix the issue that you are having.
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 06/29/2023

by:

It is great the only issue is the strap that secured it needed reinforcement with a small bungee cord

It made it possible to use tow brakes without controller inside the car

Comments
Works well but the strap that holds it on broke early on and it comes lose without bungee cords

Recently had a tow package installed on a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Unfortunately, there is an issue with this model not allowing a computer flash. All lights work but no power to the brake pole on 7-pin. This little adapter solved all my issues bypassing the brake pole and using the brake lights for power. Less than 5mins of setting app up and adjusting brakes. Plug and play, no worry of warranty issues. Etrailer/Curt were very helpful.

by:

A year in, I've used it multiple times, and love it.

We use it on a minivan towing a trailer, and I didn't want a bulky box all the time.

This plugs in simply, works well on it's own, and the smartphone app works as well. Plus there's no installation work/cost.

Highly recommend.

Comments
Ive had this perhaps 3 years now? Taken a few trips each year using it. I still use it and it works great!

The BEST Solution by far if your truck didn’t come equipped with a factory trailer brake controller. This thing works folks and you won’t put a crick in your neck trying to install an aftermarket controller under your dash that will forever be in your way! Get one. It’s worth every penny.

2014 Cadillac SRX

I received an open box/returned item. Very disappointed that etrailer would send this to me, especially since it cost $XXX. What I received was the item thrown into a brown shipping envelope with a brochure and the PIN. I have already contacted eTrailer. I hope they do the right thing.

Installation and pairing with my mobile phone Android ver 9 was straightforward I want to try also with my other phone version 5 Android that has bluetooth even the manufacturer not recommends. I drove my trainer RV for about 500 miles and did some adjustments while driving to feel the trailer brakes engaged. So far this device is expectedly very good and see very easy on phone the trailer brakes are engaged. I don't see why it comes with manual braking when click that red button on phone screen, because when you do car's brakes the app on the phone does the same thing on trailer's brakes, I secured the device with that rubber band and my trailer connector with a Velcro band wrapped a fee times. I am happy with the purchase.

by:

Worst break controller I have ever used. The break controller operated two ways either it did not work or it brought the trailer to an abrupt stop. Called Curt Technical Support and did everything they advised and it still did not work properly. Call again and they said, I need to have my brakes adjusted on my Airstream (not likely per Airstream tech support), stopped using it and switched brake controllers. The new break controller works great. I would not recommend purchasing anything from Curt.

by:

This device makes it in every easy to control the brakes on your camper. I considered installing a typical under dash style, but this option is a once and done purchase for all my future 7-pin trailer brake controlling needs. It connects effortlessly to my phone via bluetooth. There are multiple profiles in the app for different vehicle/trailer combinations. So simple.

by:

Awesome if your car does not have trailer brake controls. The bluetooth curt button is almost needed though with this, unless you want your phone mounted on dash.

by:

So far, has worked very well and happy that I didn’t have to run a bunch of wiring, etc. for brake controller. Very easy to use and set up.. My only complaint is the strap that helps secure the unit from falling out of the vehicle 7 pin plug is absolute garbage! If you secure it with any force, the rubber plug that is inserted into the strap adjustment strap pulls out. Not a big deal, I wrap it with a ball bungee. Curt needs to charge a few more dollars and add a quality strap

2016 Lexus GX 460

I’m sure I’d give the Echo five stars if I could install it on my 2016 Lexus GX 460. Unfortunately the Lexus 7-pin doesn’t come from the factory with an energized 12v pin which is needed to power the Echo (you can connect the Lexus 7-pin to trailers and all lights work, just not the Echo).
The whole idea behind purchasing the Echo was to avoid tearing apart the dashboard etc., so as long as I have to tear apart the dash to hardwire a controller, I can get a much cheaper controller.

by:

Great product. It was easy to install and works well with my trailer. I would highly recommended if you have a 7-pin and I just missing the brake controller. Or if you have a 4-pin and want to do a little DIY.

I have had the product for a year and it is still working great!

It utilizes a mobile app for its gain settings and emergency braking. After pairing the Bluetooth connection with your...

  • Why Wouldn't Curt Echo Brake Controller Apply Trailer Brakes with Brake Pedal at Stop
The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 that you have is a proportional controller which means it needs to sense deceleration for it to start applying trailer brakes. If you apply the vehicle brakes while at a stop the controller can tell you aren't moving so it doesn't apply the brakes. Basically when you apply the brakes in the vehicle that tells the Echo that it needs to start looking for deceleration and to apply a proportional amount of braking on the trailer brakes.

  • Towing Weight Capacity of 2008 Chevy Avalanche with 5.3L Engine
I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2008 Chevy Avalanche and it looks like with the 5.3L engine it has a towing capacity of 7,000 pounds for the 2WD model or 7,200 pounds for the 4WD model. I do recommend verifying this by checking your copy of the owner's manual as well. When looking for a trailer you can safely pull the most important thing to look at is its GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating), which refers to the most it can weigh when fully loaded. A...

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for 2019 Ram Bighorn 1500 Towing 30 foot Camper
You absolutely do need a brake controller to tow a 30 foot camper. While your truck might be able to slow the trailer down at a pace that seems reasonable for how large of a trailer you have, you need to have the ability to stop quickly in an emergency situation and the only way you'll be able to do that is with a brake controller installed in your 2019 Ram. A really easy to install and great option is the Curt Echo part # C51180. This basically just plugs into the 7-way at the rear of...

The app for the Curt Echo functions just like any other app on your phone so you can switch between apps while using your phone. If you happen to lose connection between your phone and the controller though the Echo is built to...

  • Is Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller Compatible with Motorhomes
The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 is absolutely compatible with your 2014 Newmar Mountain Aire. It may not have shown up in our fit guide if you searched with "2014 Newmar Mountain Aire" because the fit guide is based on the chassis of the motorhome; based on my research your Mountain Aire uses a Freightliner XC chassis. The Echo only requires your 7-way have 12 volt, turn signals and ground connected to its socket, so as long as you have a 7-way with those functions...

  • Why Wouldn't Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller Power On When Plugged into 2010 Chevy Suburban LT
Sounds like the 12 volt power circuit of your 7-way trailer wiring isn't active currently which is why the Curt Echo part # C51180 is allowing trailer lighting functions to pass through it but won't power on. Since you have a 2010 Chevy Suburban what you'll need to do is check out the help article I attached that details how to make all of the connections under the hood needed to activate this circuit.

  • Troubleshooting Intermittent Trailer Disconnected Message with Factory Brake Controller on Ford
The "Trailer Disconnected" error message on the dash with a factory brake controller is usually related to an issue with the blue brake output wire that runs from the brake controller to the 7-Way connector. The fact that the issue remains constant with multiple trailers indicates a problem on the truck side. You have already done a great job of inspecting and cleaning both the truck and trailer side 7-Way so next you will want to try and inspect the blue wire coming from the back of...

We've asked Curt this before and they've told us that the range of the Curt Echo part # C51180 that you referenced is 50 feet but that can vary somewhat depending on the Bluetooth capabilities of your connected smartphone.
