I’m double towing a 16 ft trailer behind my 36 ft fifth wheel trailer. I’d like to be able to use both trailer brake system. I have a 2024 Chevy 3500. Hd with a factory brake controller

Hi John,

If you want both trailers to have working electric brakes while double towing, you'll need to control them separately. Your 2024 Chevy 3500 HD's factory brake controller is designed to operate the brakes on the fifth wheel, but it can't safely control a second trailer that's connected behind the fifth wheel. Trying to wire both trailers into the truck's factory brake controller can lead to improper brake operation, so it isn't a setup I'd recommend.

The best solution is to install a dedicated 7 way connector at the back of your fifth wheel using the 7 Way RV Upgrade Kit, part # ETBC7L. The black power wire should be connected to a battery on the fifth wheel, and the white ground wire should be attached to a clean, bare metal surface on the frame. From there, I'd use the Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller, part # C51180, to control the brakes on your 16 foot trailer. This lets your truck's factory brake controller manage the fifth wheel while the Echo independently controls the second trailer, giving each trailer its own proportional braking.

I'd also recommend installing a breakaway kit on the second trailer if it doesn't already have one. The Premium Trailer Breakaway Kit, part # BRW38MR, is a great option because it will automatically apply the trailer brakes if the trailer ever becomes disconnected.

One other thing to keep in mind is the laws for double towing. They vary quite a bit from state to state. Some states allow it, while others don't, and the ones that do often have restrictions on overall length, required equipment, and even licensing. If you plan to travel across state lines, it's a good idea to check the regulations for every state on your route before you head out especially since your setup is getting pretty long.

My Echo blue tooth works fine, the only down fall is that I have to have my app up at all times and my phone screen light up, If not the phone looses communication with the Echo and the trailer brakes don't work.

@WilliamS My solution to that was to use my old inactive phone as the device to connect with the Echo. That way my current cell phone is free for google maps and any calls I may receive while driving. So, if you have or can secure a retired phone that you are able load the app to and utilize the blue tooth capability to connect to the Echo, you should be good to go.

I added the manual override button (part #C83HR) to free up my phone and not be distracted by trying to keep the app running.

@T2 Great tip! I forgot to mention the add-on override button part # C83HR. This button installs on the dash for emergency situations without needing to always have your phone out while driving. Thank you for reminding me! What kind of trailer are you towing?

I have a 2013 Silverado Duramax and after chasing wires, replacing receptacle and module I still have an occasional no brake on the hardwire. When it works I use it. When it's not I Use the Curt Bluetooth and it works every time. Never had any issue with it. Only complaint is that it asks a lot of questions before it gets going. But, not a deal breaker. Get some Velcro straps to secure it in place on the receptacle cover lid. Just made me feel better ??
