Updated 08/09/2025 | Published 08/05/2025

Question:

Hi! I have a 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Max Platinum Hybrid with the factory tow package installed. Can you help me sort out all the parts needed to install the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty brake controller? Thanks!

Hey Kyle! It looks like the tow package on your Grand Highlander comes with a hitch and 4-way wiring. To add a brake controller all you need to do is upgrade it to a 7-way. The Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 will upgrade your existing 4-way to a 7-way. Once that is installed, you can add the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED52VR.

What kind of trailer will you be towing?

Thanks. I will just be hauling a pop up camper or small hard camper. I'm shying away from the Redarc now that I realize I don't have any open blanks on my left dash for the knob and don't want to puncture a hole to make one. I'm now thinking I could do the ETBC7L and either the Curt Echo C51180 or Tekonsha Prodigy TK94FR wireless brake controllers. Still debating which one but leaning toward the Tekonsha so I don't have to rely on a phone for setup/adjustments/manual override.

@Kyle I really wouldn't worry about making that hole, it is small, it will be covered by the knob, and you can put the knob anywhere. Once you install it it will look like an OEM part. If you're doing any regular amount of towing this is the route I would go. The Echo # C51180 can be convenient but has issues connecting to the app sometimes so I don't really recommend it anymore. You don't want to be getting ready to leave and fighting with the app because it isn't cooperating. I've used the Prodigy RF # TK94FR, some people like it, I don't really care for it or its remote myself. If you're really against installing drilling a hole I recommend taking a look at the Redarc Tow-Pro Link # RED57AR. This gives you the reliability of a Redarc controller without the knob. It comes with a remote that is powered via USB and also works through their app. The app is nice as well since it can test trailer connection functions. The only thing with this is I'm pretty sure it can't plug in-line at the back of the current # ETBC7 and # ETBC7L adapter so you will need a different 7-way. You can use the # PK11898 for your connector and then the Wiring Kit # 5506 which will be like a custom kit. This will allow you to plug the Link into the back of it since it uses a USCAR connection. It has wiring to run up to your cab for a standard brake controller but you can skip that step just like the # ETBC7L since you don't need the brake output line.
