Wireless Brake Controller Recommendation for 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness

Updated 07/22/2025 | Published 07/03/2025

Question:

Hi, we have a 4 pin trailer connector on our 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness. We want to pull a small trailer that has a 7 pin round connector and trailer brakes. We want to be as intrusive as possible in terms of built in changes to the car. We have a second car in the same situation/same 4pin connector and would like to be able to use the same equipment in either car. We were hoping for a conversion connector and maybe wireless trailer brakes. Is this possible? Can you recommend a setup, please? Thanks, Katja

Hey Katja, the Curt Echo Mobile brake controller part # C51180 would be your best option. This is a wireless brake controller and all it requires is a 7-way with the taillight functions and the 12 volt accessory circuit active and you'd be set. So for both of your vehicles that have a 4-way installed you'd need the part # ETBC7L and once installed you can use the Echo between both vehicles easily.

The ETBC7L plugs into your 4-way and then you run a wire from it to your 12 volt battery post and its ready to be used.

Thanks Jameson, Do you recommend a transmission cooler to be installed in our Subaru Outback Wilderness? Thanks

@Katja Yes I would as it's pretty cheap insurance for your transmission to last as long as possible. Heat is basically the number one killer for transmissions especially when towing. So for a cooler the Derale part # D13503 would be an excellent option.

On my Subaru Outback Wilderness 2021, I have the OEM hitch, which I just learned is not rated for weight distribution systems. I do, however, need to install one (vehicle does squat quite a bit with our 2900 lb camper). I have purchased Part Number: FA92-00-0450 Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Trunnion - 4,500 lbs GTW, 450 lbs TW. Can you recommend a hitch I could install that allows me to use a weight distribution system? Thanks, Katja

@KatjaK The issue is that its not just the hitch that isn't rated for weight distribution systems. The problem is more to do with the vehicle not being designed for it so there isn't a hitch that can be designed that makes it possible. The best solution would be rear suspension enhancement like the SumoSprings part # CSS-1125R which will provide the rear suspension additional support to reduce the sag.
