Question:

I’m would like to add the Manual Override Button for Curt Echo Brake Controller Item # C83HR to my curt echo. I know it says that the button has to be used in conjunction with the phone app. However, if I keep the app open in the background of the phone and switch to google maps can I still use the button for manual trailer brake engagement without having to switch back to the curt echo app on the phone first?

As long as the app for the Curt Echo # C51180 is running in the background of your phone the manual override part # C83HR is going to work. It would require you killing the app for it to stop working.

@Craig Manual override on a brake controller is used mostly as a way to curb sway when on the highway. Usually just a slight grab of it will pull the trailer straight and stop it. Other than that it's use is pretty situational. Like some use it when testing to make sure their fifth wheel hitch is connected solidly to their trailer before taking off. They will have the jacks only slightly off the ground, activate the override lever, and then try to drive off. If the trailer stays connected you are good to go but if the hitch wasn't connected you'd pull away from it.

@JamesonC my cirt controller app has to relink Everytime I open the phone. It only takes a moment but it does take time. I use Google maps with the screen dark and follow the audio cues played via Bluetooth on the trucks radio. So if I start getting trailer sway, curt intends for me to hold the truck steady, open my phone, switch from Google maps to the controller app, wait for it to relink, then press and hold the button untill the trailer settles down? Perhaps the button needs to stay linked regardless of the phone, and included in the package. So in an emergency it can be reached quickly same as the traditional controller..
