How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

The 7-way plug electric jack is a great replacement for my crank handle jack. I did not want to install and maintain a 12V battery for just a jack so this is an easy plug and play solution for me.

7 pin easy hook up for trailer jack does not work on my 2020 ford ranger. Missing 12v power to jack control? any advice in Trouble shooting. Is there a compatibilty problem with ranger to your jack 7 pin config? Will use manual hook to battery rather then ask for replacement jack if possible?. Before I cut any wires and void warranty. Is all I have to do is cut and splice the fused red wire to a positive battery terminal to do this. What abount grounding? Please advise should I modify and wire direct or return jack back for refund/replace

Thanks for reaching out! What I am going to tell you to do first is check the fuse box for your Ford and make sure that is a fuse there for the 12-volt function. From time to time some Ford trucks do not have this fuse active. Also, you can do what you mentioned by running the power to a 40-amp circuit breaker like part # 9510 to the positive terminal of the battery. The jack would be grounded through the seven way.

by:

Shipped quickly and arrived a day early. Jack has ample power and is fairly quiet operating.

If your 7 pin plug is not supplying 12v power, check the fuse box under the hood for an open 40A fuse. Placement will differ on vehicle/models but on my 2002 Silverado it is stud #1. It was pinned from the factory but never had a fuse, 12v power supplied after fuse was installed.

by:

So far so good! I really like the 7 pin pigtail, eliminates cutting into the trailer’s wiring harness. Clean and tidy in appearance.

by:

Worked perfectly, handled my trailer no issues, just remember to unplug it before you pull away from your parked trailer, don't ask me how I found that out...

by:

After only using the unit a few times, it stopped working because of the low quality power connection. We replaced it with a more durable version in order to get our toyhauler hitched back up to move.

by:

Bought it to replace the OEM-installed fancy electronic-controlled jack that either would not work, or worse yet it jacked up the trailer on its own!
This one is basic. No fancy electronics to fail! Easy to install. Works perfectly as advertised.

by:

Installed this today on a cargo/work trailer that I pull with a 19 f250, install wasn't bad, except for the trouble shooting. Just happen to notice they had one with a 7 pole wire, which I got so it'd work off my truck(since I have a cargo and no batteries), I'm pretty mechanically inclined and started troubleshooting what the issue was as soon as it didn't work. I had to change terminals for the hot wire to my parking light terminal, only way it'd work. Other than that, works amazing and regret not getting one sooner.

by:

I ordered the etrailer jack after doing some research. The installation was simple and straightforward. I have a 2018 GMC pickup and 24' ATC trailer. When the jack is installed as intended, my tailgate would hit the jack housing. So, I slightly elogated the mounting plate holes and rotated the jack 1/3 turn...problem solved! A nice surprise was that the manual cranking feature works very easily, less effort than the original hand crank that came on the trailer. Some reviews I had read complained about the slow speed of the jack. I did not find that to be a problem. While it is not fast, you won't get in trouble and it beats the heck out of manual cranking. I'm happy with the purchase and would recommend it to anyone.

Ordered on Friday at 4:00PM. Shipped on Friday and arrived on Monday afternoon. Great service and quick shipping are what you can expect from etrailer. I installed the jack on a 7x14 cargo trailer that I use to haul misc. equipment and materials with a 2018 Ford F350 DRW using a Curt 48012 pintle/ball combo hitch. Once the old jack was removed, installation was very easy. I did however have to make a modification to the jack. My tailgate would not clear the jack when mounted in its intended position. With kids and misc helpers that is a no go for me. After looking at the jack, I removed the 5 screws holding the top cover on and noticed there are 4 socket head bolts holding the gear box onto the jack body. I removed the bolts, rotated the gear box around to the back of the jack and reinstalled. This position provides me clearance for my tailgate and protects the switches from potential damage. It does put the light on the wrong side to be useful, but as the etrailer employee said in the video, “its not the brightest light” to begin with. I have only used it a few times to confirm operation but so far it works well and sure beats the old jack I had on there. etrailer has great customer service and technical support. I would recommend this product to others and will continue to shop at etrailer. Thanks!

Hi Chelsea:

Order did arrive on Wed.
& in good shape.
Have only had a brief moment to look at it.

From what I see so far.....looks like it will
fit. (the jack's top housing, clearing the front
support on my generator mount).

Hope to install it this weekend.
Thanks, reconnect later.

Arrived on time, no damage, instalation under 30 minutes, works as advertised. Only issue was the 'stop here' tape near bottom of the shaft was skewed. I know from past experience not to lower the Jack all the way down but am awaiting a reply from my email asking for info on exactly what point I should not lower the Jack. Other than that, I am very satisfied with the product.

by:

After a year still works great……easy to install, and didn’t need the light because I had already installed a rear utility light to my truck to hook up trailers but for those who don’t have a back light it is much easier than a flashlight. Great product!

by:

it's finicky often leading to holding your break whether it will work. The plug can be responsible sometimes for that but if it sitting a while it gets sticky so a good bit of use and service is needed. etrailer has been fantastic customer support when needed.

by:

Very easy install. Works amazing. I love the 7 way plug that powers it. Very simple to use.

by:

Did not fit .Sanded the power coat down trying to get enough clearance Clarance haha and it still doesn’t fit so close so I guess I will sand some more. What is odd is that this is specific for my camper as per previous question as to fit.Paint remover maybe offer any suggestions
I already have over an hour in this and it still isn’t installed.
Thanks

by:

So far, the jack is performing as it should. It levels up our camper quickly and easily.

by:

Works great on my 24' car trailer!

by:

Best purchase I have ever made and I will never have go without one on my horse trailer ever again!

by:

This is a good little jack! It came from etrailer quickly, installed easily, and works great! As usual, the folks at etrailer were a pleasure to work with!

by:

Package was delivered on the day that was scheduled. Very happy with the jack. It was very easy to install. Thank you so much.

by:

It came to me with the light assembly broken due to shipping. The company forwarded me a new cover right away and I changed it out. Looks and works great

by:

Does not work when connected to my 2024 GMC Denali 3500HD, required an LED Load Adapter on the 7-way connector

by:

Seven blade plug was miss wired. I had to disassemble and contect wires to correct location. Involved locating "hot" pin and then ground. This was complicated as new vehicles have so much plastic, it was difficult to get a ground for test light. High level of frustration. Cheap shielding for wires from plug to jack. Cheap plug, but works. Unit now works. Apprehensive about reliability.

That is not good that you had to go through all of that extra work. Let me see if there is anything that we can do for you.

Great looks. Powerful Jack. I mounted a dedicated battery to it so I would not have to depend on my vehicle’s thin wiring. Questions that I had during the installation were promptly and professionally addressed by etrailer’s technical dept. amazing help and support. Thanks

  • Recommended A-Frame Electric Jack for Horse Trailer with Living Quarters
If you are looking for an a-frame electric trailer jack for a horse trailer with living quarters, you are going to want to go with a heavy-duty option because of the heavy tongue on the trailer. The heavier you go, the longer the jack will last as it does not have to work as hard and the faster it will extend and retract. The Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack part # JET-5000 is what I recommend because of the 5,000 lb weight capacity. That said, you could go with the Electric Jack...

  • Installing The etrailer Electric Trailer Jack On A Trailer Tongue With Excessive Powder Coating
The outer tube of the Electric Jack w/ Footplate and 7-Way Plug # EJ-3527-BBX is 2-1/4" in diameter, which is a standard diameter for most tongue-mounted trailer jacks. If the paint on the trailer tongue is preventing the tube from sliding through the hole then you'll unfortunately need to sand through it or use a grinder to cut through the excess until you can get the jack to pass through. Once you get the jack installed I recommend touching up the paint to help prevent any rust or corrosion...
