What to Know Before Installing Dual-Motor Landing Gear

There are some benefits to not having a cross shaft on your landing gear. First, each leg isn't bearing the burden of the other as it is in a single-motor system. And since each leg works on its own, you can adjust each one separately when stabilizing your rig. When you have a cross shaft, lowering both legs on uneven terrain can not only prevent your trailer from being perfectly level, but in extreme cases, bend and warp your chassis.

Second, you're creating more clearance above the motors, which makes more room for cargo, or anything else you need to carry with you on your journey. A cross shaft otherwise limits your ability to stack and store cargo around your landing gear. However, if you're comfortable with a little DIY work with the electrical wiring, you could wire both legs to work with one switch. That way, you'll get the benefit of a dual-motor setup, the simplicity of a single-motor setup, and still not have a cross shaft limiting how much cargo you can keep in your cargo hold.

A camper cargo hold is stuffed with boxes and supplies

But when you solve one problem, sometimes you create another. So, there are a few things you should keep in mind if you're considering upgrading to this set of landing gear. First, responding to emergency power failures will take a bit more time. The electric-only option is not compatible with a manual hand crank, so without the cross shaft, you won't be able to use a manual hand crank to lower both legs at the same time. Instead, you'll remove 4 screws that connect the motor to the leg, and use a large flathead screwdriver on each leg to lower each one individually.

This can turn into a real chore if your legs are in the furthest corners of your storage compartment, as shown above.

Even when the power is on, the Ultra-Fab Deluxe landing gear has a screw travel rate of 1 inch every 15 seconds. In total, that means extending the full 21 inches would take you about 5 minutes. Fortunately, the 17 inches of drop leg travel should help to reduce some of that time.

How to Determine the Support Capacity You Need in Your Landing Gear

Landing gear stabilizes about 25% of your trailer's total weight when it's loaded with cargo. For example, a 14,000-lb trailer has a pin weight of about 3,500 lbs. For these legs to work, you'd need a set of landing gear strong enough to lift no less than 3,500 lbs. And, yes, it's okay to have some legs with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's pin weight. In fact, they should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Note: Do not use landing gear to lift your trailer or RV during tire changes or service work, because doing so will exceed the capacity of the landing gear.

I bought this to replace the under powered OEM landing gear on my 2018 39' toy hauler 5th wheel. I received great service from etrailer staff. First time for me to remove and replace landing gear so after 1 or 2 youtube videos I was able to get it done with a little grinding and drilling (and cursing).
I've been using the new landing gear for a year now and here are my thoughts:
PROS:
Ability to adjust the 2 sides independently. Makes leveling much easier.
Quality hardware and stronger motors.
CONS:
The toggle switches that come with it are very stiff and a bit awkward to use.
The pin at the bottom of each leg is not attached. You have to pull it out, then line it up with the hole to replace it. All others I've seen have a spring loaded guided pin.
The legs don't go up or down any faster than the OEM. Although that was never claimed, I was hoping they would.

Overall I am happy with the product. I will say, if I had to do it again I would strongly consider going with the competitor's product for the better controls and spring loaded pins.

I have a 2013 Heartland Toyhauler, weight about 12,000 pounds, we added large solar panels on the roof thus have a large battery bank running across the front, adding an extra weight at 800 pounds. The factory 6000 pound jacks where having a difficult time lifting the trailer off the hitch, straining. These new jacks motor on each leg, no problems lifting, there rated at twice the load rating at 12,000 pounds. We removed the front cover section on the front of the 5th wheel in order to gain access to the jack locations. The Jacks fitted right in where the old ones went. I made up a small box to mount the two switches, with an long cord, that connect and sits in the side lockable basement storage. So no outside switches, added security, there no way to move the jacks, unless you unlock the side basement compartment, plus i added a master shut off switch so there's is no accidental activations. I going to be building a custom enclosed trailer this year, and i be using these jack, for sure.

Fantastic product, works very well no issues

Camper jacks are built very stout, they were easy to replace my old jacks, plenty of wire for hooking them up and made it a nice clean look. Jacks are twice as fast as my old landing gear and run smooth and quiet. I've been very pleased with the jacks as they have worked very well.

by:

These are OK, and with a fair amount of work and creativity I have got it set up perfect for what I wanted. The jacks extend very slowly. My main complaint is with the wiring: first off the 5 feet of wire provided is simply ridiculously short considering it is designed for a vehicle that is 8ft across, when I contacted fabtech to ask for extra wire they just offered to sell me a switch assembly that would come with another 5ft of wire pigtail. Also the jacks have a pigtail that needs to be soldered to the wire. This should be designed with a socket in the jack itself and the wiring harness should be 15ft long (excess can be coiled or shortened) with a plug that simply pugs into the jack & should have the battery terminals already on the cable. The switches are cheap, but better switches can be found, would be nice if it just came correct out of the box, but maybe that's just expecting too much.

We just had the landing gear installed (by Professional Trailer Repair in Tucson. Would 100% recommend them). The landing gear works well and seems very solid. I really like having the two motors to individually adjust the legs. Only downsides: (1) there isn’t an easy way to manually raise/lower if the motor blows, (2) the pin to keep the legs in place has a little ball on the end instead of a cotter pin…it seems like it could come out very easily when bouncing down the road.

The landing gear work great. No problems at all.

by:

Just got them installed and seem to work as advertised. Having two motors rather than one really makes a huge difference when lifting my 15K lb. fifth wheel off the gooseneck hitch on my truck. I also love the idea that we’ll be able to fine tune the final adjustments when setting up camp since each jack works on its own switch. My only complaint is the switches is big and bulky.

by:

This was a very good set of landing gear that replaced a defective leg on my trailer. Went in easy as the old ones were a match.

by:

Just got it yesterday, haven’t opened box yet. Box looks a little beat up, imagine why, weighs 77 lbs. if any problem I’ll be sure to let y’all know.

Still working great, no issues, no complaints

by:

The jacks were delivered on time and in damaged. The information on them was accurate and detailed. The instructions were clear and easy for me to follow. To be fair, I worked in the trailer and RV repair field for almost 3 years after about 10 years in the auto repair industry. The jacks did not fit the brackets on my 5th wheel. Unfortunately there was no way to move the brackets as the frame of my trailer was manufactured with horizontal tubing and did not have a way to move them up or down without disassembling the whole front end of the trailer and adding more structure to the unit. I went ahead and welded new stops on the jacks themselves to allow them to work with the existing brackets. Everything went according to plan and the jacks operate flawlessly. I like having individual control of each jack to help with leveling. All in all, I would recommend these jacks. We will see how they hold up, but I don’t foresee any issues and don’t see anything that looks weak or under engineered.

by:

My 5th wheel is a 1997 so finding the exact landing gear was almost impossible. These are rated for 12k and my 5th wheel is 12,600 dry and they lift it without any hesitation. Installation was not for a beginner though but that was mainly because I went with a heavier duty set and my mounting locations had to be modified. I had to cut off the old mounts and weld new mounts in the correct locations. The mounts on these are adjustable, but it just wouldn't match my 5th wheel. Even doing all that, it still only took an afternoon to install doing it by myself.

by:

So far it looks good will start installing them tomorrow. Will give you updates on installation. I'm thinking I can use all the same brackets as with the other jacks, time will tell.

by:

Wowzers, what having two motors working to lift my 5th wheel toy hauler. Lifts it with no problem. Fast, makes hooking up and unhooking a breeze. No more struggling like it would with the stock single motor setup. Wish I would have done this years ago, not when one of my legs gears stripped on the first day of a 5 day NASCAR weekend. Good thing I had a 6 ton bottle jack, several wood blocks, got it off my truck, enjoyed the weekend and ordered these first thing when I got home. Install wasn't bad, if you work on things, should be no problem. Mild modification of my trailer hangers and flooring in the storage where the legs are, but nothing major. Hooked up to my truck to take the weight off instead of using jack stands. About 6 hours total, took my time to do it right.

by:

Worked great, jacks are fine but I have replaced both the switches. Switches need to be sealed.

by:

Upgraded my 2008 Weekend Warrior LED 3505 to the Ultra-Fab and couldn't be happier! The original Venture landing gear was complete garbage and has failed 3 times now. The Ultra Fab landing gear lifts much faster and sounds better. Another positive thing is the storage space I gained over the generator from removing original erector set. Ultra-Fab landing gear is much more robust compared to the original. I'm completely pleased with etrailer.com and their awesome service. I've talked a friend of mine into upgrading his garbage gear to the Ultra-Fab from etrailer. It was a bit of work to install, but my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. Thanks, etrailer!

Still going strong, so glad I upgraded so much better than the original system.

by:

Should have more of the reviews before purchase. Would not have purchased knowing it had the same poor designed control switches that my Ultra-Fab rear stabilizers have.

Wish etrailer had more options between these landing legs and the $XXXX Lippert ones.

by:

I absolutely love this gear set. We have a 40' toy-hauler and the jacks in front were, well, jacked-up! The jacks fit in really well although, due to the way the trailer was manufactured, I had to cut in an access panel on one side to get the second one in. Installation instructions were great and the hardware provided was good as well. I love that I can now control the jacks independently, which I could not in the factory set. Great product!

by:

Everything from E-Trailers handling of shipment was smooth and fast. The in-line fuses were broken and very cheap quality. I replaced them with some from O'Reiily's and all worked fine.

by:

The jacks work great. I installed them on a 2009, cyclones 3912, 40 ft toy hauler. The install was tricky. I had to modify the clip slightly to fit the standard clips or jack holders in the rig. If you’re mechanical and good with tools, you can do this if you’re not handy with tools and making things work I recommend you have someone else install. I had to modify the clip slightly to fit the standard clips or jack holders in the rig. If your mechanical and good with tools, you can do this if you’re not handy with tools and making things work I recommend you have someone else install. But once installed, these are great jacks I went from a single motor dual leg system to two legs each having a motor made a world of difference as my rig is heavy.

by:

Was a direct fit for my 2009 Montana 2955RL. Took longer to remove the weak OE jacks than install the new pair. The 6K capacity each causes them to run slow but boy howdy they lift without effort. Installed the two switches in the basement storage rearward of the left propane cabinet.

by:

I LOVE that there will no longer be a bar connecting the two jacks. It would have to be removed in order to service my generator. These new jacks are faster than what I replaced. The quality appears to be top notch. The notches on the jacks didn't line up the same as my old jacks. In fact the bottom ones got in the way of the bracket on the trailer. I made some modifications. I pounded the bottom notches back in (I shaved the edges with a grinder so it wouldn't get all mashed up). I spot welded the included new brackets in the location of the old jack notches so that the jacks would be mounted securely between the two brackets. Everything works great. I mounted the switches in the propane compartment so they are somewhat hidden. I also had to cut off a piece of the tube used for the old external manual jack lift that was in the way of the motor. In all it took longer than I thought it would but It's nice to take your time and do it right.

I bought this item and had a welder weld up brackets
Installed (wired up motors ) and one did not work .. called company they gave me phone number of manafacture and I called .. got tech on phone ... had motor in 3 days and just now wired up and is working fine ... they seem a little slow but I have a 36’ goose neck with a lot of weight up front with living quarters and etc I’m happy with them and would recommend them

Jack are working fine ... have had no problems with them ... they are a life saver at my age

by:

I am very pleased with my purchase of Ultra-Fab Deluxe Electric Landing Gear Set - 12,000 lbs rated. My 1985 Alpenlite 5th Wheel was designed and built for hand-crank front jacks, so it was a bit of a challenge to figure out how to replace them with the electric landing gear. Except for welding the mounting brackets to the trailer's frame, I did all the work myself, taking my time and checking my work as I went, following the very clear written instructions that came with the product. These jacks are built for strength and reliability and have the power to raise and lower the RV for hitching and unhitching quickly and easily, compared to the original hand-crank jacks. I like that each jack can be operated independently for ease in leveling.

Every time I use my trailer, I am so glad I got this landing gear!

by:

Arrived quick. Checked parts and NO bottom plates and no bolts for brackets.

by:

I purchased this product to replace the landing gear that had failed on my 5th wheel. I called around to a few other dealers and they were not very helpful. Ricky S. at e trailer was able to give me the product specs. that I needed and took my order that day.
My product arrived one day earlier than expected.
I installed the new landing gear myself and I must say that if you are a mechanical novice don't attempt yourself. This of course depends on your coach design. Mine is a toy hauler and the passenger side jack is right next to the generator. It was a challenge to get the old jack out and the new one end. However with that being said the new landing gear works as advertised and I am happy that I used e trailer to make these needed repairs.

by:

I received the Jack's in acceptable time, free shipping was great. 1 jack failed upon install. It was replaced and is working now. I'm glad I had the time to wait. etrailer good company and I will order from them again
