How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Tongue Jack for Various Trailer Sizes
The Electric tongue jack for a trailer is determined by the actual tongue weight of the trailer. Normally this is 10-15% of the total trailer weight when loaded, but a jack is one area where having something rating larger than needed will not cause an issue. We have jacks ranging from 1,400 lbs to 5,000 lbs rated capacity and with tongue jacks they are almost always rated far higher than the actual tongue weight because a 1400 lb tongue weight is quite a bit and 5,000 lbs would be more...

  • Recommended Powered A-Frame Trailer Jack for a T@B 320 Teardrop Camper
Yes, the vast majority of a-frame trailer jacks use the same bolt pattern which is 3" apart on center. Therefore you should have no problems whatsoever using an electric a-frame trailer jack on your T@B 320 S teardrop camper. For this, I actually recommend the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack part # JET-2500 over the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack part # JET-3755 because it weighs less, 23 lbs vs 26 lbs. The 2,500 lb weight capacity will be more than enough for your...

  • Replacement Electric A-Frame Jack for 2024 Coleman Lantern LT
I'm not 100% sure which floorplan of the 2024 Coleman Lantern LT you have, possibly the 17R. Regardless, the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack - 2,500 lbs # JET-2500 will be more than enough for your travel trailer. Even the heaviest of the models wouldn't come close to 2,500 lbs of tongue weight. It wouldn't hurt to get the # JET-3755 if you wanted it to move a little faster but it isn't necessary.

  • Replacement Foot Pad For Stromberg Carlson 2500 Electric Tongue Jack
You will need the Replacement Foot Pad # 2500-25 for your Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-2500. You can see this foot mounts on the outside of the inner tube while the Replacement Foot Pad # 2500-3755G you found fits inside the larger tube on the Jack # JET-3755. We do have the Pin # 2500-26 for this as well. If your concern is with the amount of time waiting on the jack to raise and lower we do have the Stand # A10-0900 which is 8-3/8" tall and will greatly reduce...

  • Can I Turn The Trailer A-Frame Jack To Achieve Clearance For My Lift Gate/Tailgate?
Tongue jacks like the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-2500 are capable of being turned and bolted into a different orientation. As this jack will only have 3 bolt holes the head will turn 120 degrees to either side. Also the utility light on the head of the jack will not shine on the hitch like it will currently. The Bulldog Powered Drive Trailer Jack # BD500187 has a much smaller head and may provide the clearance necessary to open and close your lift gate without...

I have provided a picture that shows the jack dimensions. These measurements were taken here by another Expert recently. The outer tube is 2 inches in diameter and the inner tube is 1-3/4 inches in diameter. The bracket to mount the jack uses a standard A-frame pattern.

  • Will the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-2500 fit a Starcraft 22 ft Trailer
Yes, nearly all trailer use the 3 inch bolt pattern for a-frame jacks so the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-2500 will install very easily as it is designed to fit the 3 inch bolt pattern you have on your trailer. I attached a review video for you to check out for this jack also.

  • Can 7-Way Operate Powered Trailer Tongue Jack if Trailer Battery is Dead
A powered trailer tongue jack like the Stromberg Carlson Camper Jack # JET-2500 is best wired to a dedicated battery on the trailer. If the battery is dead then the trailer's 7-way connector won't be able to deliver enough current to operate the jack. A 7-way 12V circuit is intended to deliver a small maintenance charge to a trailer battery that is in good shape or to pass enough juice for a camper dome light for example, but not to power a trailer jack. The vehicle's 12V feed on the 7-way...

  • How to Determine Correct Size Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack for 12,500-lb Triple Axle Trailer
The correct electric A-Frame trailer tongue jack for your 12,500-lb triple axle travel trailer will need to have the capacity that will surpass your trailer's loaded tongue weight, which is typically between 10 and 15 percent of the loaded trailer's weight. So your 12,500 pound trailer would have a tongue weight between 1250 lbs and 1875 lbs, so any trailer jack rated over 2,000 lbs would be sufficient to lift the trailer's tongue, however I recommend a higher capacity and high quality...

  • Recommended Trailer Jack For Trailer With 800 Lbs. Of Tongue Weight
In order to choose the correct jack for your trailer, you must first determine what type of jack you will need. You can choose from either an a-frame jack or side mount jack. Once the correct type of jack is selected, you can then begin to narrow your search down based upon weight restrictions. The trailer jack needs to be capable of lifting the tongue weight of a trailer, rather than the total weight of the trailer. The tongue weight of a trailer is typically 10-15% of the total trailer...

  • Recommended Trailer Jack for a Jayco Jay Flight 174BH Travel Trailer
In order to find out a jack for your Jayco, you're going to need to know what your trailer's tongue weight is and pick a jack that can support that weight rating. Since your Jayco has a GVWR of 3,950 lbs (and tongue weight is 10-15% of the GVWR), that puts your range at 395-592 lbs tongue weight roughly. If you actually know your tongue weight that would be the best case, but since we don't at the moment this'll work too. So with that said, the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue...

  • How Do I Determine Which Electric Tongue Jack To Choose For My Trailer?
No you're right on track, a tongue jack like the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-2500 that you mention is not designed to support the entire weight of your trailer, only a portion of the weight. When it comes to choosing an electric tongue jack for your camper, you're going to want to make sure that you're choosing a jack that can support 10-15% of your total tongue weight. So for instance, you mentioned that your 174K Hideout weighs about 5020 when fully loaded,...

  • Recommended Electric Tongue Jack for a 6,000 Lb Travel Trailer
A trailer jack only needs to be rated for the tongue weight of the trailer when used in this location (on the tongue). However, it is always a good idea to choose a jack that is overrated for your needs as this will create less stress on the jack which will in turn improve it's life. For your trailer with a hitch weight of 620 lbs, I recommend the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack part # JET-2500 which is rated for use on trailers with a tongue weight up to 2,500 lbs and will...

  • Comparing Operating Speed of Electric Tongue Jacks
Powered tongue jacks like the Stromberg Carlson # JET-2500 and the others shown on the linked page do not all carry jacking speed ratings. This is because there are a lot of variables that affect speed of operation. Generally speaking, there is no simple answer to your good question. Higher capacity jacks may often run slower than lower capacity jacks since their internal mechanisms are beefier/heavier to...

  • Amperage Draw of Motor and Power Wire Gauge of Stromberg Carlson # JET-2500 Electric Trailer Jack
The Stromberg Carlson JET-2500 Electric Tongue Jack uses a 12-volt motor. Under load, the motor draws 24-25 amps and the motor is fed by a 12 gauge wire. The best practice is to power the jack via a trailer mounted battery. You can use the 12-volt accessory circuit from the 7-way to maintain the battery, but it cannot charge a depleted battery. Using the accessory pin on the 7-way to directly power the jack can be problematic because of the long run from the vehicle battery. Drawing the...
