Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Positive Caster Makes for a Smoother Towing and Installation Experience

Blue Ox TrackPro Positive Caster

When you turn a corner in a car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically corrects itself and returns to center. The same technology used to keep your vehicle centered on the road is what the TrackPro uses to prevent trailer sway before it even starts, no matter if it's caused by high winds or sharp turns. Pointing toward the rear of your trailer, there's a positive caster angle built into the hitch. It works in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force that keeps your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle.

This positive caster creates another benefit - an easier installation. Since the required pitch is alredy pre-set, there's no need to fine-tune it using hard-to-access washers or a difficult-to-use thumbscrew. The only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height.

Steel-on-Steel Friction Corrects Sway

Blue Ox TrackPro Steel-on-Steel Friction

If you need an option built with American-made steel that will hold your trailer in line while providing sway control, the Blue Ox TrackPro might be just what you're after. In addition to the pre-set pitch described earlier, the TrackPro creates a rigid system that holds your trailer in line behind your vehicle, helping keep your trailer from getting off track. And it uses friction to force your trailer back in line if a strong crosswind or passing truck is a bit too much for the rigid hold to handle on its own.

A close-up image shows where the spring bar grinds on the steel bracket

Because the steel-on-steel friction of the bars and L-brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear some banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway.

Fun Fact: Steel-on-steel friction is what locomotives use to keep multi-ton railcars from swaying.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Recommended WD Hitch For A 2023 Airstream Basecamp 16X
Hello Michael. So, we do not sell the Andersen WD hitch here, but it is something I am familiar with. I also just spoke with an associate of mine who has some experience using the Andersen WD hitch so I can definitely give you an honest opinion on it. What they say about it being easy to set up is true. Other than that, they really are not that great. The components seem flimsy, and it does not provide good sway control or weight distribution. I cannot say it is something I would recommend...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution with Sway Control for 2021 Intech Sol Horizon Rover
You will want to consult with your trailer's manufacturer for their guidelines on using a weight distribution hitch since you do have an all aluminum frame on your 2021 Intech Sol Horizon Rover. It looks like your Sol Horizon Rover has a GVWR of 4000-lbs, which should have a tongue weight of between 400-lbs and 600-lbs fully loaded. You'll want to choose a weight distribution that has a tongue weight rating where your coach falls somewhere in the prescribed range. I recommend using the...

  • Correct Blue Ox TrackPro for 2017 Airstream with 6,000 lb GVWR
Hey John, thanks for reaching out! If the 470 lbs of tongue weight you're talking about is with the 2017 Airstream fully loaded for travel then the 6K Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU36FR is a great solution for you as long as your tongue weight is 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight. Otherwise I recommend the 8K Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU47FR because it gives you the ability to load your Airstream to the full GVWR and still be effective.

  • Weight Distribution Hitch w/ 7 Rise For 2021 Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E15TB
Your 2021 Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E15TB has a GVWR of nearly 3,900 lbs, so a good estimate for your loaded tongue weight is going to be in the 450 lb - 500 lb range. For that tongue weight, what you will need for a weight distribution hitch that will give you the rise you need is one from Blue Ox: - Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - 7-Hole Shank # BLU36FR The TrackPro # BLU36FR has a maximum rise of 8 inch, and is for loaded tongue weights between 200 lbs and...

Thanks so much for that good information, and we can get you exactly what you are looking for - a quiet weight distribution hitch that is rated correctly for your 465 lb tongue weight and provides outstanding sway control. For that the best option is from Blue Ox: - Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution with Sway Control # BXW0550 This system, which is rated for tongue weights between 350 lbs and 550 lbs, is quiet because it is a chain-style so you won't hear the noise that comes with the...

  • Can and Should you Use a Sway Control without a Weight Distribution System
If you are perfectly happy with how your 2017 Ram 1500 is handling the weight of your trailer and you only want to address the sway, we definitely have a sway control for you. It's the Curt Friction Sway Control, part # 17200. This includes the piece to mount to your trailer frame and the piece to weld onto your ball mount along with everything needed to get this working. It can be mounted to either side of the trailer frame and uses friction to control the sway. I've linked to a video...

  • Can Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution Saely Be Used with Longer Shank to Clear Tailgate
Yes, you can use the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution # BLU36FR with an extended shank, and for that I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank # EQ90-02-4600 which measures 14" from the center of the hitch pin hole out to the adjustment holes for the ball mount section. Using a standard extended shank will be just fine and won't have any positive or negative effects on this system. The only time using an extender is an issue is if you add a standalone extender like the 18" Long...

  • Determining If Blue Ox TrackPro BLU36FR Will Work On Trailer With GVWR of 4995lbs
To confirm which weight distribution hitch will work to tow your trailer with a GVWR of 4995lbs you will need to measure its tongue weight, as the tongue weight rating is usually with the trailer unloaded and will not be accurate. The easiest way to get an accurate tongue weight measurement is with a tongue weight scale like the # e99044, but there are other methods that are outlined in the included help article. Since your trailers GVWR is 4995lbs and tongue weight is typically 10-15%...

  • What Weight Distribution Hitch w/Anti Sway do You Recommend for Using My Pop-Up Camper?

This system comes with a shank that is compatible with 2" hitch receivers and it fits trailer frames up to 6" tall. • Will Fastway e2 or Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution Help Level Trailer With 330 lb Tongue Weight
It will; what is happening is the tongue weight is creating the "V" you mentioned, so you are not towing level, and a weight distribution system is exactly what you need. This will level you out, and for your 330 lb loaded tongue weight, you do have the correct Fastway system: - Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA92-00-0450 The # FA92-00-0450 will correct the "V" and ensure your Jayco is level, and even though you mentioned you didn't have sway on your last trip,...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch For A 2016 StarCraft AR One 14RB 255 lb Hitch Weight
We can definitely set you up with a weight distribution system to use on your 2016 StarCraft AR One 14RB. This camper has a hitch weight of about 255 lbs, so both the Curt # C69JR and the Blue Ox # BLU65FR will be rated much to high to use with a camper like this. For example the # C69JR is made for campers with a hitch weight between 800-1,000 lbs. Instead I recommend the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution Hitch # BLU36FR. This is made for campers with a tongue weight between 200 and...

The Spring Bars # BLU82FR for the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution # BLU36FR is what gives you the tongue weight range of 200-600lbs. The adjustment holes for the ball mount itself are only to help you level the trailer. Your current Blue Ox TrackPro part # BLU36FR as it sits does not have the correct rating for the larger trailer you are going to but there is a pretty easy solution. You can just swap the spring bars out with the part # BLU52FR and you'd have a higher rated system that would work great. This will give you a tongue weight rating of between 800 and 1,000 lbs which would be perfect for your trailer.
