Most step-through bikes, dual-suspension bikes, and small children's bikes will require a bike adapter bar.

Thule 2-Bike Rack for OEM rear-mounted spare tires

The Thule Spare Me is a great way to utilize your vehicle's spare tire to carry up to 2 bikes. The rack easily attaches to most rear-mounted spare tires with a mounting plate and hand knob, and it's built of durable materials - powder coated steel and weather-resistant, injection-molded nylon.

Versatile Rack Fits Most Spare Tires

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack mounting plate

The Spare Me bike rack installs on your spare tire mount with a plate and bracket. The mounting plate fits over the lug nuts of your spare tire, and the bracket extends from the plate through your spare tire's pilot hole to provide an attachment point for the rack. You can position this plate at 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock, depending on your spare tire's lug nut pattern.

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack long and short mounting plates

The rack comes with the short mounting bracket installed. For larger tires, you can swap out the short mounting bracket for the long mounting bracket.

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack standoff extensions

To fine-tune the fit of the bike rack on your spare tire, a long standoff extension and short standoff extension are included. Use the appropriate combination of a mounting bracket and standoff extension to ensure that there is at least a 1/2" overlap between the mounting bracket and the square post of the mounting plate. To help determine the appropriate configuration of mounting brackets and standoff extensions for your tire size, see the table below.

Tire Size

Adapter/Bracket To Use

P195 - P235Short Mounting Bracket
P235 - P275, 31", 32"Long Mounting Bracket and Short Standoff
P285, 12.5, 33"Long Mounting Bracket and Long Standoff

Adjustable for Offset Spare Tires

Thue Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack adjusted for offset spares

The Spare Me can be adjusted to center your bikes on a vehicle with an offset spare tire. If your spare is offset, remove the bolts that hold the rack to the mounting bracket. Reposition the bracket 4" to the left or 4" to the right - depending on your offset - and reattach the bracket to the rack using the existing holes on the rack.

Locking Hand Knob and Cable Lock

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack locking hand knob

The bike rack secures to the mounting plate with a hand knob and threaded bolt. The hand knob includes a One-Key System lock for securing the rack to your vehicle.

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack cable lock

A built-in cable lock secures your bikes to the rack. The cable deploys from the arm and locks to a second cable built into the upright arm of the rack on the same side. The cable lock and receptacle store inside the arms when not in use.

Thule One-Key System convenience

The One-Key System cylinders can be swapped out if you own other Thule products and want to use the same key to lock them all.

Anti-Sway Cradles

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack Stay-Put anti-sway cradles

Stay-Put cradles with anti-sway cages hold your bikes firmly in place on the rack. The cradles and straps are made of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), a stretchy, gel-like substance that absorbs road shock and minimizes vibration to reduce the stress of travel on your bike frames. The nylon anti-sway cages provide a third point of contact that prevents sway and bike-to-bike contact.

Folding Dual Arms

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack folding dual arms

The rack's dual arms provide great bike support and stability. They fold down for garage parking clearance and for storage. Simply loosen the knobs, push down on the arms until they snap into place, then tighten the knobs again. The knobs and the side plates are made from durable, weather-resistant, injection-molded nylon.

Safety Straps

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack bike stabilizing strap

The bike rack comes with a load strap for securing handlebars and bike wheels during transport.

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack oversize spare tire anchor strap

There is also a safety strap included for when you're using the rack on an oversize spare tire (P235 or above). This strap wraps around the top and bottom tubes of the rack and is tightened with a metal cam buckle.

Rubber Spacers

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack rubber spacers

Rubber spacers on the bike rack frame stabilize it against your spare tire, helping to prevent the bike rack from shifting during transport. These spacers also guard your spare against damage caused by the bike rack rubbing against the tire.

Video Transcript for Thule Spare Me Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack Review - 2009 Toyota RAV4

Today on our 2009 Toyota RAV4, we're going to do a test of the Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Carrier, part number TH963XTR. Where we can install our carrier, we've already gone ahead and removed the spare tire cover. Now let's go ahead and remove the spare tire so that we can fit our adaptor plate. Now that we have the spare tire off, we'll go ahead and fit on our adaptor plate and then reinstall the spare tire. With this spare tire reinstalled, we can now go ahead and slide on our bike carrier and tying it down with the locking knob. With the tightening knob tying down and in the locked position, our carrier is now secured to the vehicle.

Let's go ahead and load up a bike so we can see what it looks like with a bike installed on our carrier. First, I'll take my straps off the cradles and make it easier to install the bike. In just a few simple steps, you can see how our bike is loaded up and we're ready to hit the road. Now let's go ahead and show you how we can still access the rear cargo area. And there you have it for the Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Carrier, part number TH963XTR on our 2009 Toyota RAV4..

quick, easy mount and removal. not too thrilled with the fact it rusted near the ends of the rack bars. need to maintain it with rustoleum. did they not think it would be exposed to weather?? 494645

etrailer are a great company to work with, excellent customer service. I've bought a couple things from them, the latest being a Thule bike carrier. It's a Thule so it's robust and does exactly what it's meant to. Unfortunately, when it arrived the box looked a little beat up. Inside I noticed some minor damage to the frame (tiny little dent in frame) Nothing that would compromise use but thought I'd let them know. Got an immediate response apologizing for inconvenience and letting me know brand new one had been shipped. I print off a pre paid label and have UPS pick up the damaged one. Few days later replacement arrives double boxed for protection. 499293

At this point I can only provide comment on the service, as I have not yet had a chance to remove the product from its shipping container. However, I can say that the service has been great. I phoned in the order to a very knowledgable and helpful person at Etrailer. She subsequently sent me three emails to keep me aware of the status of the order. It must have been shipped within 12-24 hours of the ordering phone call and it arrived today, four days later (one of which was New Year's day). I am off to a great start with the Thule rack and with E trailer! 111866

The Thule bike rack spare time mount has been to Florida and back. No problems to report. We are about to leave for Florida again. Again two bikes but this time one is a fat tire bike Sun Crusher 7 with wide handle bars. Will have to see how they fit together. Anticipate having to remove handle bars to get both bikes on. Well see how that goes.As a follow-up to Etrailer, from whom I bought the Thule rack, they were to have gotten back to me about a refund on a part, but I never heard back. It was a small issue, so it has not changed my mind about them being a very good supplier.

Thank you very much for the follow up. I did check into your order notes and saw that a credit was issued on 1/19/14 to your account for the replacement handle that you referenced. We will be in touch with you soon regarding this credit.

I wanted to respond to you to let you know that I had a really good experience ordering from etrailer. I was informed every step of the way, from the moment I ordered it online, all the way up until it was delivered to my doorstep. I was very impressed!! The bike rack itself was easy to install on my car - I have a RAV4 so it was important to me to be able to still be able to open my trunk with the rack on. Haven't gotten to actually use it yet (I've been temporarily deployed with the military), but I can't wait to! I've attached a picture as well - it looks so spiffy, and makes me seem more athletic than I actually am. Again, great experience, and I would definitely recommend etrailer to others in a second. Have a great day! 135056

This bike rack works great. Took my bike on a cross country road trip from Tampa, Florida to Whistler, British Columbia and back with no issues. There was no slipping or excessive shaking with highway speeds up to 80ish mph. Encountered 105 degree heat, rain squalls and snow storms with no issues. No problems with the set up and the fact that the rear spare tire on my 2011 Toyota Rav4 is off center was not an issue as the rack can accommodate for this. It's a well made product from a reputable company. Make sure to read the directions as they advise against opening the rear hatch with the bike on the rack due to weight concerns. Shipping was quick as were replies to questions to customer service. Follow up correspondence from etrailer was also appreciated. Overall great experience, would highly recommend the product as well as etrailer. Thanks! 464529

Received the rack yesterday and installed on my wife's 2010 RAV4. Fits perfectly without any of the extenders or extra mounting pads. Will be easy for her to quickly use without my help. Only suggestion to THULE... The locking knob is shipped with a plastic plug in the hole where the lock is to be installed. the directions say to remove with a screwdriver. I quickly stripped the grove with a normal sized screwdriver. You would need a huge screwdriver to fit the grove. I had to wrestle it out with a pair of pliers - it is then discarded and you install the lock. Would have been a lot easier with just a hole. Once I got that out, rack mounts easily and looks good. 114551

I ran into the same problem with the plastic plug on that knob. It is still in there and ran into another problem. I screwed the knob on. It began to get tight and i kept turning it. Now the knob just turns freely and doesnt screw any further. Did I strip the knob somehow? I didnt muscle it too hard, it just popped and now just spins freely. Do I need to buy a new knob now?

Double check to make sure the lock is not in the locked position. When the lock is locked, the knob spins freely so that a thief cannot get the rack off the vehicle. When the lock core is unlocked, the knob re-engages and will free the rack.

My wife and I received our bike rack just in time to take a 900 mile roundtrip to SC to go camping with our family. I am not mechanically inclined but with a little help from my wife we figured out pretty quickly how to get the rack attached to our 2007 Toyota RAV IV. We had no problem carrying our two bikes there and back. We did need the adapter bar for the lady's bike in order to carry it along with my road bike. Now if it will just stop raining! 79525

My husband and I are looking for a new or slightly used vehicle to have for fun camping, biking, hiking trips. Is the Toyota rav 4 great for camping? It sounds like we will need a new bike rack. Thule seems to make stellar gear. BTW, where did your family camp? We are always looking for new places. We live in Cary, NC.

The RAV 4, among other small SUVs and wagons, makes a great vehicle for outdoor adventures, right now it is in the top 20 among our customers. Small SUVs are great for getting outdoors because they are versatile, without being bulky or cumbersome. I always see a few of them at one of our local mountain biking hot spots. Because they have been so popular with the outdoors crowd, many manufacturers have a lot of offerings that are compatible with the RAV 4. The most common limitation is the size. Depending on the number of people and the activity/ies, small SUVs can be too small, but that is all relative. With the RAV 4, you will have 3 bike carrying options: spare tire mount, hitch mount and roof mount. With spare tire racks, on a 2012 RAV 4 for example, you will be limited to 2 bikes. If you went with a 2 inch hitch, there are carriers that will haul up to 5 bikes available. There are some swingout models that will allow full use of the lateral swing hatch door without removing the rack. Roof racks are a great option because it keeps the rear of the vehicle free for a cargo carrier and roof rack system can be configured to haul cargo, kayaks, bikes, skis and just about anything else. As you are shopping and deciding on your vehicle, you can use our Vehicle Fitguide to see what accessories are available for a given vehicle.

2013 Jeep Wrangler

After a week of comparing, I decided that this Thule Spare Me 2 bike carrier was the perfect choice to haul my bike on my new 2013 Jeep Wrangler. My husband has a Thule Vertex Swing 4 bike carrier on his truck, which we love. I could transfer it to the hitch on my Jeep whenever I need it, but I wanted something that I could leave on my Jeep that also wouldn’t be in the way when I wasn’t using for my bike. When not in use, this Spare Me carrier folds down out of the way and it doesn’t cause me to make any changes when backing up in tight spaces unlike the hitch mounted carrier. It was easy to install. I am only 5 feet tall and not very handy with tools. I was able to take off the spare tire with the lug wrench that is in my Jeep easily, pop out the center Jeep logo from the tire, put on the mounting plate and reinstall my spare without help. I then installed the carrier, my bike, cleaned up the packing materials, and even had my husband come admire my handiwork- all in less than an hour. I can easily fold and unfold the arm and secure it in just a few seconds. It is easy to mount my bike to it and all the straps hold my bike securely and are easy to use. It is also easy to open the straps and take down my bike, so I can be off riding and not fussing over how to get my bike off. I have no problems opening the gate of my Jeep when the bike is not mounted. I don’t know if I would recommend opening the gate with the bikes on. I have already used the Spare Me for my bike and my nephew’s bike. I drove it over 50 miles at interstate speed and the bikes stayed in place securely. You do need to follow the instructions and use the straps provided to keep the bikes from moving too much. I also use some simple inexpensive hardware store hook and loop straps that keep the wheels in place during transport. From previous experience, I don’t care for bungee cords they stretch too much and don’t hold or pull too hard on my wheels and cause problems with alignment. I learned that lesson the hard way. My only complaint about the carrier is that the integrated lock for securing the bikes to the carrier is not long enough to accommodate a women’s bike. It works perfectly to go over the top bar on the frame of a man’s bike, but since a women’s bike needs to use an adapter bar for this style bike carrier, the lock only secures the adapter bar. Some women’s bike adapter bars on the market have locks, but the one I own does not. For me, this isn’t a huge problem. I have a separate cable bike lock that I will use if I need to leave my bike unattended. The lock that secures the carrier to the vehicle works as described, so no worries there. I also want to say that etrailer amazed me with the shipping. I could have order this same product from my Jeep dealer, but they said I would take them 10 business days to get it. I didn’t want to wait 2 weeks. The price was nearly the same from etrailer so I took my chances that I would get it faster. I order this Friday afternoon and UPS delivered it to me Monday afternoon. Wow! I also selected etrailer because they have the clearest videos and instructions. I was truly able to compare the products and feel like I was making informed decisions based on my skill level and needs. If I ever need something like this again I will remember etrailer. 99618

etrailer service was attentive and blindingly rapid. The Thule spare me 2 installed relatively easily - the hardest part being the lock core installations, I'm not sure why that task isn't completed at the factory. The bike carrier is designed to stay installed when not in use, it is compact and folds neatly. It allows me to open my tailgate fully with a bike on the rack. The rack provides locking facilities. These are the main reasons I selected the bike rack. Another reason is more personal - I am able to load the rack in my garage with ample room to walk easily all the way around my jeep without opening the garage door. That's huge. The unit appears to be sturdy enough. I haven't had a chance to transport with it yet but I will this weekend. 504096

Great product. So glad I chose this one instead of one of the other types I'd seen around town. Didn't like the design of the ones that fit into the trailer hitches or on the roof. Found this one online and called to order. Steve (I think it was Steve) was extremely helpful and suggested the Swagman adapter which is worth its weight also. Totally satisfied with it and enjoying it every chance we get. 491144

Super fast (2 day) shipment and delivery of the Thule Spare Me (Spare Tire) bike rack for my grandson's Jeep Wrangler from etrailer.com. The instructions were very straightforward and helpful in getting the bike rack put together and placed on the Jeep. The Thule materials which comprise the rack were also first rate (light but very sturdy). I am very pleased with my experience with etrailer.com and intend to do more business with this fine seller. Because of your quick delivery of the bike rack (along with its ease of assembly on the spare tire), I will now be able to drive my grandson's jeep this week out to him in Los Angeles where he is stationed with the U.S. Coast Guard. Thank you very much for making this all possible. 486374

  • Troubleshooting Thule Spare Me Bike Rack that Won't Fit RAV4 Due to Spare Tire Flange
Sounds like you have the original version of the Thule Spare Me, part # TH963, which won't fit on your RAV4 because of the protruding flange on your spare tire mounting plate. The later versions of the Spare Me, TH963XT, TH963XTR and the current version, # TH963PRO provide a redesigned mounting plate that allow the rack to fit.. Thule redesigned that # 753-3532 mounting plate so it will fit your RAV4, so if you get the new mounting plate, it will allow you to use your rack on your 2012 RAV4.

We have one spare tire mounted bike rack that fits offset spares at the back of a vehicle like your 2002 Honda CR-V. For that we have the Thule Spare Me part # TH963PRO which would work well. I wouldn't recommend a spare mounted bike rack for a vehicle that wasn't capable of an offset on a vehicle with an offset spare.

  • Thule SpareMe Knob Doesn't Tighten Down All the Way on a 2012 Toyota RAV4 Spare Tire
The problem that you are having with the Thule spare tire mount bike rack # TH963PRO is a result of the standoff extensions. If you were not using them the bolt would be able to thread all the way in the mount that attaches to your 2012 Toyota RAV4. But if you are using one of those standoffs the bolt can only thread so far into the standoff since it isn't hollow. You likely do not have to use either standoff. But if you find that you do you can use the best combination of standoffs...

You have several options for bike carriers on your 2010 Toyota RAV4, spare-tire-mount racks like the Thule Spare Me # TH963PRO which limit you to 2-bikes (due to weight restrictions for the tire mount) or hitch mount racks which require a hitch receiver like # C13149, shown in the linked installation video. For three or more bikes you'll need to go the hitch route. Your RAV4 could have either a 1-1/4-inch or 2-inch hitch on it (please see the linked article) so you'll want to confirm...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2012 Toyota Rav4 with Covered Spare Tire
Since your spare tire is covered the best option you would have for a bike rack for your 2012 Toyota RAV4 would be a hitch mounted rack. • Best Way to Carry Bikes with a 2011 Toyota Rav4
The best option I could recommend for you to carry bikes with your 2011 Toyota RAV4 would be to first install a hitch and then use a hitch mounted bike rack. First you will need to start with a hitch, for that I would recommend the Draw Tite Hitch part # 36588. Hitches are great because not only will you be able to carry your bikes, but now you could do some light towing if needed. For a bike rack the most popular rack we carry is the Swagman XTC2 part # S64670. This is a great rack...

  • Will The Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Carrier, # TH963PRO, Fit On A Spare Tire On A Trailer
The Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Carrier, # TH963PRO, is not designed for use on the back of trailers. The reason is that the bike rack is subjected to more jarring and rattling on the back of a trailer spare, which would put more stress on the bike rack then what it was designed for. If you have a 4 inch to 4-1/2 inch square, continuous weld bumper on your RV you could use the Swagman RV Bumper 2 Bike Rack, # S80501. It will not work on aluminum or spot welded bumpers. This bike rack is designed...

  • Best Spare Tire Bike Rack Comparison
There are two main competitors for the best spare tire mounted bike rack that would fit your 2008 Toyota Rav4. The # TH963Pro and the # Y02599. I would be happy to compare the Thule Spare Me, # TH963PRO, and the Yakima SpareRide # Y02599. First, in terms of the configuration and durability of the mounting plates and bars: these two racks are on par with one another and I cannot give an edge to either one. I have dealt with the Spare Me more than the SpareRide and I can say from...

  • How to Carry Bikes While Towing Rockwood Freedom Tent Trailer w/ Spare Tire on Rear
The Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Carrier you mentioned, part # TH963PRO is not intended nor designed for be used on the rear of the towed trailer or camper. The suspension on a camper isn't as compliant as that of a car, plus the distance between the rear axle and back bumper of a trailer is usually a bit longer that what's found on a passenger vehicle. This means that the bike rack would be subjected to much stronger bouncing and jarring forces than it would if it were installed on a passenger...

  • What is the Difference Between the Thule Spare Me XTR and PRO Spare Tire Mount Bike Carriers
What you have here are different generations of the same bike carrier, in this case the Thule Spare Me. The newest version is going to be the Pro, # TH963PRO. The previous generation was the XTR and it is no longer being made. So by all accounts the PRO is the better one since it is the newest and most up to date. For Thule part numbers start out usually just a number. Then the next generation will get an XT added on, followed by an XTR, and then a PRO as they make minor changes and...

  • Recommended Bike Rack for 2006 Toyota RAV4 With a Spare Tire on the Back
I have three different brands of bike racks that will fit your 2006 Toyota RAV4 with a spare tire on the back. The Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Rack # TH963PRO and the Yakima SquareRide 2 Bike Rack # Y02599 are both hanging racks. A nice feature on these frames is that they both come with a bike and rack lock on them. The other brand of bike rack that we have that will fit on your RAV4 that I recommend is the Saris Freedom Bike Rack # SA999TB. This bike rack has three points of contact...

  • 3-Bike Rack Recommendation for 2011 Toyota RAV4
In order to transport three bikes on your 2011 Toyota RAV4 I suggest a hitch-mount type carrier rather than a spare-tire-mount type such as the Thule # TH963PRO. that you referenced. Hitch mount racks will use the strongest part of the vehicle - its frame - to bear the weight of your carrier and loaded bikes, rather than the spare tire mount which is not really designed to carry too much more weight than that of the spare tire itself. If you still prefer a spare tire mount type I suggest...

The maximum weight capacity of this rack is 75 pounds. If the two bikes total more than 75 pounds, this rack will not be able to support them. Depending on the shape of the frame, you may also need bike frame adapters like part # TH982XT to carry the bikes level. If they bikes are too heavy, write back and we can explore some other options.

  • Will Thule Spare Me Bike Rack Fit a 2010 Toyota RAV4 with 235/55-18 Tires
The Thule Spare Me # TH963PRO is listed as a fit for the 2010 Toyota RAV4. This is assuming a stock spare tire size. The rack will fit tire widths up to 10 inches, your 235s should be around 9-1/4 inches wide. And it will fit tire diameters up to 32 inches and your 235s should be approximately 28-3/16 inches. So all signs point to yes! I have linked a video showing the rack on a 2009 RAV4. If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across...

  • 2016 Jeep Wrangler Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack Recommendation Thule SpareMe or Yakima Spareride
There are two main competitors for the best spare tire mounted bike rack. They are the Thule Spare Me part # TH963PRO and the Yakima SpareRide # Y02599. Either one is an excellent choice that your daughter would love. I would prefer the Thule over the Yakima as it has the ability to offset slightly for vehicles that have spares that aren't centered at the rear of the vehicle and because the straps for the frame cradles would be much easier to keep track of since the Yakimas have to come...

  • Can Thule Spare Me Bike Carrier Be Mounted On Spare Tire At Rear Of Popup Camper
The spare-mount bike racks we offer are not designed to be used on any towed trailer but I do have a solution for you. This attaches to the ball mount in your trailer hitch and allows you to be able to carry up to 4 bikes between the rear of your vehicle and the camper. A longer ball mount is needed for this bike rack. You can check out part # 2736 or part...

  • R Pod 179 Bike Rack Recommendation to Fit Around Spare
The Thule SpareMe part # TH963PRO cannot be used at the rear of camper so this would not work for your Rpod. Instead you'd want a bike rack like the Swagman Around the Spare part # S80501 which would work well for you. It attaches to the camper bumper and fits around the spare.

  • Troubleshooting Spare Tire Bike Rack Not Fitting Over Jeep Wrangler Spare Tire
The Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Rack # TH963PRO that you have can be adjusted further out from behind the spare tire using different size brackets that are included, and it can be adjusted horizontally to account for off-center spare tires, but unfortunately there's not much you can do to adjust it vertically so the arms of the carrier fit over the tire on your Jeep. It sounds like the spare on your Jeep Wrangler is just a tad too large for this particular bike rack. The Spare Me 2 is compatible...

  • Thule Bike Rack Cradles are Sliding While Driving
It sounds like the cradles have worn down enough to slide on the arms. What you can try is to spray some hair spray where you want the cradles to stay then slide them into place. The hairspray will initially act as a lubricant but once it dries it will become tacky and hold the cradles in place better. If that doesn't work and you don't want to replace the cradles, see link, you can try to fatten up the arms by wrapping some electrical tape around the bars so they are thicker.

  • Will the Thule Spare Me Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack Fit a 2008 Toyota RAV4
The Thule Spare Me, # TH963PRO, is a fit for your 2008 Toyota RAV4. It is very easy to install. I have included a link to a video review on a 2009 RAV4 showing how it installs. You will not want to open the rear door with bikes loaded on the rack because that can put too much stress on the hinges of the door. Having just the rack on and no bikes would not be an issue. You can fold the arms down on the rack when it is not in use so it will not stick out as far or cause clearance problems...

If the backup camera is mounted anywhere on the spare tire or spare tire carrier of your 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser the Thule Spare Me, # TH963PRO, will not fit. Otherwise it is listed as a fit. If your FJ Cruiser does have a back up camera that is mounted right in the center of the spare then I recommend using Hollywood Racks spare tire mount bike rack # HRSR1 instead. But you will have to remove the plastic cover from the spare tire for it to fit. I have linked video reviews of both racks...

  • Comparing the Thule Spare Me 963, 963XT, 963XTR, and 963PRO Spare Tire Bike Carriers
I haven't seen a TSPRO963 but I can tell you that # TH963PRO is the newest version of the Spare Me bike carrier. The 963XTR was the previous generation. The Thule Spare Me Bike Rack, # TH963PRO, went through 4 generations. The 963 was first. This original design excluded some vehicles because of the size of the spare tire or how it was mounted to the car. The issue was resolved with the new mounting plate, # 753-3532, in the 963XT. So from that point on, all the racks would get the...

The spare tire bike rack that I would recommend for your 2009 Toyota Rav4 is the Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Carrier - Spare Tire Mount, item # TH963PRO. This rack is designed to fit your vehicle as long as the original spare tire is in place or, if a larger spare has been added, the measurement from the back of the wheel, where it sets against the spare tire mount, is 5-1/4 inches or less. The later versions of the Spare Me, TH963XT, TH963XTR and the current version, # TH963PRO provide a redesigned mounting plate that allow the rack to fit..
