Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

2018 Ford Edge

The install went easier than expected. 3 Hours start to finish by myself. There were a few bare edges where paint was removed during shipping, which will be the first to rust. I might try to touch it up but in past experience this doesn't help much. Adding some padding on the edges of the frame might prevent damage during shipment. To the install. I am a moderately skilled shade-tree mechanic, and anyone who can do minor car repairs should be able to tackle this install. Removing the trim was easy. Using a strap to lower the muffler was not too bad (even detaching the hangers wasn't too bad). I would definitely go this route instead of removing the bumper cover as some others have mentioned... much easier. The hardest part was getting the hitch frame in place without a helper. I ended up using some landscaping bricks and an old empty car battery to lay one end of the frame on while I attached the other. Having someone to hold one side while you attach the other would make this part MUCH easier. Still, I was able to tackle it without too much trouble. Note the frame IS heavy, so you won't be able to just hold it up while you get the bolts attached. After that, I tightened the bolts, re-hung the muffler, and put the trim back on and it looks and works great! Now I can go fishing again with my new Edge. Also of note, the backup camera and the automatic rear hatch sensor still work fine. You do have to "kick" to just one side of the hitch or the other... but it works no differently than before. Very satisfied with the product, as long as it lasts the life of the car without rusting to pieces... which time will tell on that front.

Comments
We always recommend covering any bare metal with a rust-inhibiting spray paint. If any rust has already started on the bare metal, cleaning it off before applying paint will help the paint apply better and prevent rust from spreading further. I have linked a help article on rust prevention.

A year later, Ive used the trailer all year for hauling without a hitch! Really pleased, have zero complaints. Everything is still nice and snug, even the bare metal spots I was worried about corrosion have hardly gathered any rust. I would recommend this product and will be a customer for life for any future towing needs. Zero problems.

Installed my hitch on April 28, 2020 with my son helping me. It is a Drawtite 75234 installed on a 2019 Ford Edge. Installation went exactly Iike your video for a 2018 Edge. Took about 1.5 hours. We used ramps to get under car. We reinstalled the piece we had to remove to install the hitch but it had to be trimmed. Not sure if it is sound deading or aero dynamics. Used the Swagman G10 2 bike rack. Went together easily and is very solid. I am extremely pleased with etrailer! I would highly recommend both products.

Comments
Both products are great. We have taken them to the Outer Banks in North Carolina and the Jersey Shore. No problems at all and very easy to use.

I bought the Draw-Tite for a 2018 Ford Edge Sport. I saw lots of discussion about throwing out the heat shield, which left the rear bumper flimsy. I was able to trim the heat shield, reinstall it, which firmed up the rear bumper cover. Attached are some pics showing how this was done. Basically, trim off the ends and center piece, anything that would extend back towards the hitch. I used a Dremel cut off wheel and Tin snips, worked great. Then, cut a 3 inch square next to the centerpiece opening. Do not cut the heat shield material. This allows the receiver part of the hitch to fit in the opening. Then, trim the ends by following the heat shield material. Slide the heat shield back in place starting from one end and pushing it across and back into place. Reattach all bumper cover bolts, that will firm up the bumper cover. Pull wires worked great. I used jack stands to hold the hitch in place and installed it myself. Just watch the video a couple of times, it was not that hard. I bought the Curt wiring harness as I wanted to keep the pigtail inside when not using, which will be about 95% of the time. Good product, easy install.

2016 Ford Edge

Overall I am happy with the hitch for my 2016 Ford Edge Titanium. Installation went smoothly. Without the fish wires, install would be nearly impossible. The installation video from Etrailer is such a great resource and ultimately the reason why I ordered from them. One thing the video misses is re-installing the heat shield/air dam that is removed. I put this back on in the following order: 1. Remove heat shield/air dam 2. Install trailer hitch loosely, with nuts just threaded on to end of carriage bolts 3. Do not pull the rear horizontal carriage bolt through the hitch yet. Leave it in the frame tube with the fish wire pulled through. This allows the hitch to rotate down and out of the way enough. 4. Slide the heat shield/air dam back into place and fasten. You may need a second set of hands for this part to pull the bumper up/back. 5. Finish installing hitch I gave this product 4 stars because of the exposed steel when I unpackaged the hitch in a number of locations. I hope this does not cause rust in the future. If I had to do this whole thing over again, I would but the Curt hitch.

Thanks again to e-trailer for making my life a little easier with my new trailer hitch. It was once again easy to install and it looks great. The instructions and being able to watch the video makes it easy to install and in no time ready to use. This is the second hitch I have bought and I will definitely recommend this product. Thanks again George. Now I can take my power chair and get more shopping done. The hitch is almost invisible.

Things are still going great with my trailer hitch. I will definitely recommend etrailer to anyone in need of a great reliable trailer hitch. Thanks again George.

The only problem I had was installing the heat shield that sits on the Rear bumper There’s no explanation on how to install so had to remove one half of the Hitch so I could pried open a little and cut some pieces in the end of both ends on the heat shield so it could fit other than that no other issues but it could Also be because I have the sport trim I see a lot of the se,sel and Titanium Trim On video but no sport Trim so my tip would be to install the rear Bumper heat shield before tightening all the bolts on the hitch Thanks Dan

Trailer hitch is mounted and it looks great. However, here are some pointers you need to pass on to your other customers: 1) People need to know to not pull the wire pulls off of the bolts. Unscrew them so you can reuse them if a bolt falls out of the hole. 2) The video said the exhaust doesn't need to come off. That is incorrect. Unless you have a lift, the exhaust has to come off. You'll never get it place without removing it. 3) The hitch itself was about a 1/16" too narrow and I couldn't put it up alone. I needed help from a floor jack to push it into place. Lastly, you're instructions say 45 minutes to install. It took me about three hours. Luckily, I'm mechanically inclined and love a challenge when it comes to stuff like this. I rate 5 stars because it looks great on my car and all hardware was included.

Great product. Four stars rather than five because I wish they made a version where the receiver is several inches higher. All you would have to do is trim the rear bumper pan a little bit and it would be much higher off the ground (i.e. near factory receiver height). You already have to trim a stud under there to make it fit so who cares about some minor plastic panel trimming? You will need to reinforce the rear body panel a little bit due to the trim piece that is removed to make room for the hitch. I cut four pieces of plumbing pipe strap. I pulled four of the factory nut clips off of the removed panel and stuck one to each of the plumbing straps. I was then able to run the straps from the factory holes in the bottom of the trim panel diagonally up to the studs above the muffler. The rear trim panel is now way more rigid than it was from the factory. I screwed a seven-pin electrical receptacle to the side of the hitch. The rear of the receptacle is a bit close to the muffler so I ran the wiring through a spark plug boot insulator and zip-tied it as far away from the muffler as possible. Make sure you run all trailer wiring through split conduit or similar to make sure the wires don't cut from vibration against the vehicle undercarriage! Do not skip the conduit - it is cheap and easy and will protect your wiring. Overall, installation is easy and the hitch feels really solid. I'm very happy with it.

This was our second time installing a hitch on a car, and the experience was pretty much as expected. Good advice in other reviews and videos advising what to bolt to for our model and how remove the things that were in our way. We had a length of piano wire that we bent a couple spiral loops into at one end. When pulling bolts into the frame - secure the bolt threads with the spiral and run the long end thru the frame and out the hole you are using, The bolt follows along and drops into place where you need it. Detach and work on the next bolt back. We also put rolling floor jack under the hitch to hold the weight while were getting it bolted in - we're in our late 60's and I'm not that strong any more - it was good insurance,

Good product.. As an FYI from the installation video, a 5.5mm socket is the same as a 7/32" socket. As far as how I did my hitch installation: 1) I put anti-seize on the threads of the 8 mounting bolts, just in case I needed to remove the hitch later. 2) When I was reinstalling those plastic covers behind each wheel, I installed a couple thick fender washers on each of the forward mounting studs so that the plastic cover would not be bent or in a bind. With the hitch installed, the rearward stud passes thru the hitch bracket but the forward stud does not. 3) That rearward heat shield/plastic piece is removed and cannot be reused with this hitch. I noticed that in addition to being a heat shield, that plastic piece also functions to help stabilize the rear bumper cover. With it removed, that whole rear portion of the bumper cover moved easily and I became concerned about it moving excessively at highway speeds. To address the issue, I fabricated a couple of brackets from some light-gauge steel flat stock. I installed one bracket to each side of the hitch using the existing holes in the bumper cover. I used 1/4" push-pin fasteners to attach the bracket to the bumper cover, which allows it to have just a little movement, much like it had with the heat shield in place. I attached the other end of the bracket to a stud used for the heat shield directly above the muffler.

The installation was relatively easy. Hint for 2015-2016 Ford Edge Sport models, you have to remove the exhaust trim from the rear bumper to help with removing the exhaust system. Took an hour and a half to install this hitch.

This hitch is excellent! It arrived in record time (when so many shipments are being delayed) and is very unobtrusive on our Nautilus. Easy installation as well, with all the needed parts included and the on-line videos were very helpful. Some folks worry about the automatic lift gate working, but ours works perfectly--just swing your foot next to the hitch rather than under it.

I like this hitch. It tucks up underneath nicely. It is installed on a 2015 ford edge sport. Only thing i wish this kit had some sort of replacement brace for the lower valance. You have to remove the muffler heat shield as a result of installation. I feel it would crack over time in the wind. Had to file the hole to fit the rectangular pieces thru when feeding bolts thru frame which i felt was pretty minor. The vehicle specific wire harness is awesome also! Easy to follow instructions too!

This is my 2nd trailer hitch that I've installed - both bought from eTrailer. I installed the class III hitch on my 2016 Ford Edge Titanium. It took me a little over 2 hours to install. I jacked my car up in the garage. I'm sure it would be a lot easier on a lift. Overall - I'm very happy with the product. It's exactly what I expected. The box that it was shipped in was a little beat up. They need to use more packing material in the boxes. I used a Sawzall to cut off the stud because I don't have a dremel. Once you lower the exhaust down you'll have enough room to get the sawzall in there.

Great quality receiver. It came well packaged with tons of protection around the receiver itself. The box was beat up as always, but the hitch was totally fine. Pretty easy install with all the magical fish wires. I had my wife get the wires in the right holes while I held the hitch up, and then thanks the to side bolts once those are pulled through it's not going anywhere so no mad scramble to get a nut or two started. Also, with this hitch being hidden it gives a great path to zip tie the wire harness to the passenger side taillight to. Nice product!

  • Which Hitch for 2019 Ford Edge Does Not Require Heat Shield Removal
I can understand your concern; thankfully, I can offer a couple solutions. The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75234 states that only the Sport model of the Edge requires the heat shield to be removed permanently. However, when we installed it on a 2018 Ford Edge Titanium (non Sport), we found that it also required the heat shield to be removed and it cannot be modified or re-installed. The reason this is the case for the # 75234 is because it's designed to fit more snugly against...

Either the Draw-Tite Hitch Receiver # 75234 or the Curt Hitch Receiver # C78KR would be a great addition for you 2018 Lincoln MKX. I recommend the Curt Hitch Receiver # C78KR as it offers the same maximum Tongue Weight (TW) rating at 675lbs, and Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) rating of 4500lbs. In my experience the powder coat finish the Curt uses is more durable and less likely to chip or scratch, and the Curt Hitch Receiver # C78KR is also made in the USA. Make sure to review your owners...

  • No Drill Class III Trailer Hitch Fit for 2019 Ford Edge SEL
According to Draw-Tite, the # 75234 Class III hitch is a fit for all models of the 2019 Ford Edge with the exception of the Titanium model. This is a no-drill installation, but one small stud on the underside of the vehicle above the muffler will need to be cut off using a Dremel tool or die grinder. I've linked you to the installation instructions and an installation video showing the hitch being installed on a 2018 Edge. If you'll be towing with the hitch, you'll need a trailer wiring...

  • Will a Trailer Hitch for a 2019 Lincoln Nautilus Block the Hands Free Lift Gate Feature
The installation of a trailer hitch on your 2019 Lincoln Nautilus will not have any effect on the ability to use your lift gate. If you are referring to the hands free lift gate feature then what typically happens with this is that you just simply need to place your foot on either side of the receiver tube in order to activate the sensor but it will still work nonetheless. This is the case for pretty much any vehicle with a hands free lift gate feature. I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame...

  • Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with a 2017 Ford Edge Without Tow Package
The only thing I was able to find out is that you need the Class II tow package installed on your 2017 Ford Edge 2.0L Ecoboost to achieve the 3,500 lb towing capacity. I tried researching what this tow package includes but it seems like Ford just wants to hide the contents. We do have equipment that you can use for towing with your Ford Edge but I unfortunately can't guarantee that it will safely increase the towing capacity of your vehicle. I recommend using the Draw-Tite Max-Frame...

  • Will Draw Tite Trailer Hitch part # 75234 Fit a 2016 Ford Edge Sport
For your 2016 Ford Edge the Draw Tite hitch part # 75234 is a confirmed fit that would work well for you. Draw Tite test this hitch on your exact vehicle and determined it to be a fit. This is a 2 inch hitch as well. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 118377. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch...

  • Installing Trailer Hitch on 2017 Ford Edge
When installing the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75234 on your 2017 Ford Edge, the center plastic panel with heat shields will need to be removed. This will not affect the integrity of the bumper and the hitch itself will actually act as a heat shield so there will no loss when removing this panel. You will not need to make special brackets to support the bumper after the hitch is installed. I have attached an installation video on your 2017 Ford Edge so you can see...

  • Trailer Hitch For 2019 Lincoln Nautilus With Hands Free Lift Gate Sensors
On vehicle's that have rear lift gate sensors like the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus the installation of a trailer hitch blocks one or more of the sensors. This is be the same with any brand hitch you install. You will still be able to use the lift gate feature by kicking the sides of the bumper where the other sensors are located. The Draw-Tite hitch option part # 75234 is a concealed cross tube design so the only portion of the hitch that will be visible after install is the receiver. I have...

  • Most Hidden Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2020 Lincoln Nautilus
The Draw Tite hitch part # 75234 is the most hidden trailer hitch for your 2020 Lincoln Nautilus. Only the hitch opening hangs below the rear bumper which will give you a mostly hidden look and will also help with ground clearance. I attached a picture that shows what it looks like installed as well. The picture is of a Ford Edge which is the same platform as your Nautilus. I also attached an install video link too. For trailer wiring the best option is the Tekonsha kit part # 118803...

  • Removing Heat Shield To Install Trailer Hitch on 2018 Ford Edge
Actually, removal of the heat shield doesn't present a problem because when the # 75234 Draw-Tite Class III hitch is installed on your 2018 Ford Edge, it will sit between the muffler and the bumper, actually acting as a heat shield. The hitch will do a better job of keeping the heat away from the bumper than the shield did. To view an installation video, please click the provided link.

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver Options for a 2017 Lincoln MKX
The only trailer hitch receivers we have for your 2017 Lincoln MKX hang down below the bumper like the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75234 and the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C78KR. While we do not offer a hitch that exits through the bumper like you requested, the main cross tubes will be completely hidden behind the bumper, and will measure approximately 12 inches from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube, which isn't all that bad. That...

  • Does Draw Tite Hitch 75234 Fit 2017 Ford Edge Sport
I attached a couple pictures that show the Draw Tite Hitch part # 75234 installed on a Ford Edge Sport just like yours that has the different lower rear fascia. We did have one customer with a Sport model add that what helped them install the hitch was that they removed the exhaust trim from the rear bumper and it was easier to install. To get the bolts into the vehicle frame you have to "fish wire" them which is a process that is hard to describe but it involves feeding the bolts through...

  • How to Determine Ball Mount Rise or Drop for 2018 Ford Edge
Thanks for the order of the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75234 and when we test fit it on a 2018 Ford Edge, you are correct that the distance from the top of the receiver to the ground was 12-1/2". In regards to the height of the Draw-Tite # 36501, when we test fit it on a 2009 Ford Escape the top of its receiver to the ground was 16-3/4", though that's not a height you will want to use to determine the ball mount you'll need. In order to choose the correct ball mount, there are a couple...
