Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector in your vehicle's junction box. The box is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, just above the carpeting.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Made installation straightforward. I wouldn't recommend getting your setup complete any other way.

Never disconnected the controller after initial install, even though that is an option. Would recommend to anyone needing a do it yourself setup.

by:

Works as expected! I’ve had it for a year, towing about once a month for camping. For my application I had to add some wire to make it longer, and a wire sock to keep more covered. I wanted it on the right side of the steering column and it was only long enough for the left side. The connectors worked as should plug and play.

2000 Chevrolet Silverado

I had purchased and used the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller on my 2000 Silverado with good results. When I got a new-to-me 2104 Silverado, I thought I could just buy a new cable and I was correct. It was delivered quickly and plugged in with no issues. The new truck's lower dash panel is more vertical than the older truck and I didn't want to drill holes in it for the mount, so I purchased heavy duty Velcro tape and cut it to fit. It has worked without issues.

FAST SHIPPING!! Great products!!!,
I highly recommend purchasing from etrailer!! Easy to put together and install only takes minutes!! I'm using these products to pull a 30ft travel trailer and it does a GREAT job! Hooking up the distribution bars is so fast and easy they just slide in and your done, and the brake controller automatically sees your trailer and saves your settings, so you don't have anything else to do!!

Wonderful!, it is still taking care of the job, as if it was brand new

Products arrived on time and undamaged. I pull a trailer almost every other week. I have had no problems. I would gladly buy from this company again and recommend it to anyone needing trailer parts!

by:
2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Received the wiring harness and bracket for the brake controller quicker than thought. Though there was a lack of instructions enclosed I found explanations on line on Etrailer site that detailed installation. The only thing missing was though the wiring harness fit, it did not snap into place. Not sure if that is correct or not. Products performed without any complications though. I would recommend these pieces to others.

2014 Chevrolet Silverado

The Tekonsha P3 is an outstanding controller. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a good for a user friendly controller with nice options. It looks great in my 2014 Silverado. Buying from etrailer was awesome. I suggest getting the wiring harness made specifically for your truck as well. Thanks etrailer.

by:

I ordered the brake control and wiring harness separately, I wish someone from your shop would have stoped me from buying the control harness since it comes with one anyways..

by:

Quality, fast shipping, got exactly what I ordered. Couldn't ask for more. Also good price.

by:

Too short to mount your brake controller where you want it? The parts you needed to make it longer were right in front of you. I bought this adapter harness along with the Prodigy P3, which also came with it's own harness and attached pigtails. Cut off controller connection on the 3016, and wired up the supplied pigtail harness that came in the P3 box. Took 10 minutes and I had myself plenty of extra length. Have not installed it yet but it looks simple enough with the video tutorial that eTrailer has available.

by:

Installed the Voyager Brake Controller on my 2018 Silverado Custom Truck. Installed quickly and effortlessly with the wiring harness. Simple Plug and Play.

by:

I'm in the process of getting a larger trailer to haul my vintage tractors on and needed a brake controller. After reading the reviews I decided on the P3, can't wait to give it a try. Installation was a breeze, like other reviewers mentioned it took longer to decide where I wanted it than the actual installation.

by:

Simple plug and play for 2019 Tahoe. Instructions were adequate and took 5 mins to install. Works great so far with the prodigy brake controller.

by:

Exactly what I order and arrived very fast. This was my first order from etrailer, and it will not be my last.

Thanks etrailer!!!

by:

Easy to install. Only left is to hook up the trailer. 15 minute install. Very easy with the wiring harness.

by:
2015 Chevrolet Silverado

The products works just as marketed. Installation took only 15 minutes on my 2014 Silverado. I'm very happy with this purchase.

by:

The plug adapter worked well and made installation easy. However I tried to reach out to Robert S at etrailer.com to find out what to do about an annoying rattling noise that it makes driving down the road when the road is not perfectly smooth. Even light irregularities in the pavement causes the brake controller switch to rattle. I have not heard anything back from Robert S at etrailer.com. So I sent a "1" rating on the brake controller switch because of this annoying rattling noise. I'm about to just disconnect it and leave it in the glove box and connect it back when or if I ever need it.

Chevrolet Silverado

etrailer makes the purchase easy. I have always used Tekonsha Voyagers, and on my new truck (2015 Silverado) I also wanted the convenience of having the plug and play wiring harness. etrailer had exactly what I needed and was very easy to find on the website. Installation was flawless and clean thanks to the good hardware supplied. Very excited to put some trailers behind the truck with the stopping power confidence that comes with the Voyager.

by:

This cable made it very simple to connect to my Tahoe. I appreciate that they knew which cable I needed so I didn't have to wire it in myself. I wish all web sites made it this simple. The instructions with the pictures made it very easy to follow and it worked first time. GREAT JOB!!!

2017 Chevrolet Silverado

I just purchased a new 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.3 L V6, 8ft bed, base model truck, with no options. The truck is rated to tow a 5900 lbs trailer with a CGVW limit of 11000 lbs. I will be towing a Lance 1985 travel trailer, that weighs in around 4500 lbs wet. With excellent reviews and outstanding installation videos from etrailer.com, I ordered the Curt C14006 class IV hitch; the Tekonsha proportional Prodigy P3 brake controller; the Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter specified for my truck; Cipa custom slip-on towing mirrors; and the 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket - HM40975 specified for my truck. All new Chevy Silverado 1500's (even the base model with no options) comes from the factory pre-wired with a basic seven wire trailer towing harness already installed. Everything electric just plugged in without a single cut or splice of the wiring or any other wiring modifications. I just followed the instructions in the excellent installation videos on the etrailer.com website. The hitch installed quickly and lined up perfectly with factory bolt holes already on the truck frame, no drilling required. Finally I slipped on the Cipa custom towing mirrors and I was ready to tow after about two hours work. If I would have ordered my truck with a factory tow package, integrated brake controller, and extendable towing mirrors, the options would have run me slightly over $1450 on a new Chevy truck. Instead, I spent two hours of my own time doing the installations and paid about $550 for all the parts by ordering by from etrailer.com. Nice savings. You need to have a good set of socket and open end wrenches, including a torque wrench adjustable to a minimum of 110 ft/lbs for the hitch bolts. Spend some time and review all the installation videos for the parts that you need to order. The etrailer.com website also has downloadable installation instructions provided by the parts manufacturers.

I was in a bit of a spot and needed a trailer braking system in a hurry for my 2018 GMC Sierra pickup. After looking around at all the local automotive shops and part stores in the area... I was at my wit's end as no one that I spoke with had any information as to whether or not the unit they had would work for my truck. So I jumped online as it was getting down to crunch time and I needed the unit as I was to pick up the travel trailer and a couple of days. I went online and found etrailer.com
After very little research and a quick phone call to tech support... they knew exactly what I needed along with the adapter cord that plugs right into the fuse panel. It took me all of 10 minutes to install the unit and it works phenomenal. Also due to the amount of time I had to get the unit and get it installed they expedited the shipping and I had it the next day. These folks know exactly what they're doing and what you need and will not disappoint. I have never had an easier and more pleasurable installation of an aftermarket product. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Thank you very much again a very satisfied customer. I purchased the Primus IQ which is a proportional braking system and again it came with a harness that went right into the fuse panel in my truck. The instructions were easy to follow and a unit works very very well. As I said 10 minutes to put it in at the most. Great job guys thanks again.

  • Recommended Brake Controller And Plug-In Harness For 2021 Suburban Z71 With Tow Package
For your 2021 Chevy Suburban, I recommend going with the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # 90885. This is an easy to use controller that works very well with trailers that have electric brakes like yours. I use this exact one on my vehicle and I love it.
