Tekonsha Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - 119178

  • 4 Flat
  • Universal Fit
  • Trailer Hitch Wiring
  • Vehicle End Connector
  • Splice-In
  • Tekonsha
  • Plug and Lead
  • Converter
  • Hidden

Adapts import and domestic vehicles with separate turn and stop lights (3-Wire System) to standard trailer tail light wiring (2-Wire System).

Features:

  • Short circuit protection safeguards itself and the tow vehicle against harmful electrical shorts and mis-wire situations
  • Circuit automatically resets once the module cools
  • Adapts a 3-wire system on the towing vehicle to work with a 2-wire system on the trailer
  • Works with most multiplex wiring systems

Specs:

  • Wire pigtail measures 18" long
  • 4-Pole trailer connector is 60" long from converter box

In a three wire system, a separate wire is used to carry each of the stop, turn, and running light functions to the tail light assembly. On most trailers, the stop and turn signal functions are sent through the same wire.

Warning: Overloading circuits can cause fires. Do not exceed:

  • Maximum stop/turn light: 2.1 amps per circuit
  • Maximum tail lights: 7.5 amps

Read vehicle's owners manual and instruction sheet for additional information.

Good product, a bugger to instVery pleased with the product. I ended up tearing my trunk apart to find all of the wires that I needed, but all's well that ends well. It will be very simple to use now.

by:

Easy install (though haven't gotten the trailer to give it a try yet). Seems to be of good quality.

by:

Excellent product, first class service as is the norm from etrailer.

Ordered and delivered in less than 24 hours with free shipping!

Thanks Etrailer.

The staff at etrailer.com had my order filled and at my doorstep in 3 days. Amazing service and one stop shopping for high quality parts. I added them to my favorites list.

by:

Great kit to add to any carI found the instruction easy to understand and I event watched the install video on the site. I am a pretty good elecrical guy so it was no problem for me, but you are going to need to know how to test probe the tailight plugs to find out what wires to connect to. I would suggest not using scotch locks to connect to the wires. Soldiering is the only way to make sure you arent damaging the wires. Good wiring option in a small package.

Got the 5 to 4 wire converter for my 2015 Goldwing aand installed it recently. Excellent product with well marked wires. Unit was well sealed from the weather and is working great! Fast shipping too!

Highly recommend etrailer.com

Still working perfectly!

Bill E. was extremely helpful answering my questions and ordering a replacement part that was no longer available from Valley after a wiring converter failed.
Have not had time to install new part but expect no problems.
Received order promptly as well.

Worked great, just what I needed. Very happy with no problems.

Easy to install and no separate power required. Some of the other taillight converters require a dedicated 12V power source, which means routing power from the battery...not this unit! The unit is easy to install, but it doesn't come with the quick splice connectors, so order those as well if you don't want to solder and heat shrink. I installed this on a 2006 WRX which required partially removing some trunk carpet and 1 piece of trim (4 carpet fasteners and 2 plastic nuts). The demo video on etrailer.com for the 2007 WRX correctly identifies the wire colours (I checked). I have a 3rd brake light on my trailer, so I ran an additional brake light wire to the 5 pole plug I installed in place of the flat 4 connector that comes with this kit. If you aren't worried about scuffing the bumper with the wire hanging out the trunk, the flat 4 will work fine. I drilled a hole in the back panel of the trunk and routed the wires through a grommet and down to a PK11502 Pollak 5 pole socket plug.

Went though multiple adapters from different manufactures for 2000 Toyota tundra in less than a year, installed this unit and it's still working, it is a little more involved but able to locate the main body where road spray won't kill it.

Still working in Minnesota.

by:

It took me a lot of time trying to figure out what I needed to adapt a 6 Pin round to a 4 Pin flat on a 2008 Winnebago View with always on daytime running lights. Brake lights wouldn't illuminate, turn signals worked fine, and DRLs were always on the towed vehicle as well as the View. Normal plug-in adapters won't work and there was no way without an expensive Dealer reprogramming to disable the DRLs.
This baby did the trick, once the brake controller wire was identified it was a simple matter of splicing.

by:

This unit worked well with my 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI. The only thing I had to do to make it work better was to run two relays, one for the running lights and one for the brake lights.

Other than that issue, It's an easy to install and easy to wire type of deal.
Still functioning perfectly a whole year later!

by:

I installed this a year ago on a semi for electric brakes on a trailer. It was easy to install from the directions given by you guys and has worked great. Thanks!

by:

the Tekonsha trailer light module solved the problem of no stop light power to the trailer I was working on. Amy was very helpful and pleasant to work with. I tell everyone if you need anything for trailers just call E Trailer. Joe

by:

Product was just fine but etrailer takes service and training to the next level. Great how-to videos, schematics and diagrams make it very clear on how to install. Thanks!

by:

I installed this on a 2008 Honda Goldwing. It was an easy install and works as advertised. Great service from e-trailer.

by:

Good product, best price, prompt shippi ng.

by:

This converter was exactly what I needed for my Honda trike and I received it in just 2 or 3 days very pleased

by:

Just what was needed. Excellent quality. Did not expect the electronics to be sealed as well.

by:

Thank you so much for your promptness and complete answer to my initial inquiry and providing a product that worked. The one my mechanic had installed did not work.

by:

The product worked exactly as described for my
2003 Dodge 2500. No complaints

by:

Everything worked as expected. 1 year in and no issues. Great product.

by:

Works as it is supposed to and stores out of the elements.

  • Towing a Trailer with Electric Brakes with a Semi Tractor with Air Brakes
To tow your trailer that uses an RV style 7-way blade style connector with your semi that has a 7-pin connector, you need to construct an adapter that will also combine the brake signal into the right and left directional signal pins. This can be done by using a female 7-pin socket # PK11720 to accept the plug from the semi, a tail light converter # 119178 and a female 7-way RV blade-style socket # PK12-707E. The converter would be wired in between both sockets to combine the brake light...

  • Wiring a U.S.A. Boat Trailer to a 9 Wire European Trailer Plug
The 5-Way connector on your boat will be wired as follows. Green is right turn/brake, yellow is left turn/brake, brown is running lights (both sides), white is the ground or earth connection, and the blue wire is the reverse lockout or reverse lights. I searched for a connector on the internet that matches your 9-wire connector and came up with nothing. I would recommend using a circuit tester, item # PTW2993, and wire by function only. Have a helper activate all of the various functions...

  • Connecting Tractor With 7-Pole Round to Trailer With Electric Brakes
Hi Sergey; it sounds like you have a 7-pole round on your tractor and then either a 6-pole round or 7-way blade on the trailer. The # 119178 you ordered will combine your brake light and turn signals so that is a good start. Since there are no adapters available as is you will have to make one just like in the other question you looked at. You will need the # PK11700, # DW04914-1, and then # PK11893 (if the trailer has a 7-way blade) or # PK11609 (if the trailer has a 6-pole round). You...

  • Installing Brake Controller On 2000 Volvo Semi For Horse Trailer With Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
Unfortunately the Tekonsha RF, part # TK94FR is not compatible with electric over hydraulic brake systems. The installation of a brake controller will be pretty involved but possible. First you will need a brake controller that will work with EOH brakes like part # 90195. When installing this on a typical vehicle you tie the brake wire into the cold side of the brake switch. Since the Volvo will have air brakes you need to find the wire that shows power only when the brake pedal is pressed....

Installation for a 2000 and a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero should be about the same. Part # HM48925 will work, but part # 119178 is circuit protected and will protect your vehicle electrical system. You could also use part # 119178KIT which will have all the connectors needed to splice into wires and a circuit tester to make sure you have the right wires. Now to connect to the wiring on your trailer you will first need to make an adapter. There are two good ways to accomplish this. You can convert the motorcycle trailer and the motorcycle to a combined system that uses the same light for the brake light and turn signals. • Adapting 5-Way Round to 4-Way Flat for a Motorcycle
The 5-Way on your Harley might actually have separate circuits each for brake lights, left turn signal, and right turn signal. A 4-Way will have the brake lights and turn signals on the same circuits. To tow a trailer that has combined wiring with a motorcycle that has separate wiring I recommend converting the Harley connector to match the other bike and the trailer. Right now, the separate brake light circuit has no where to go on the trailer. It would be easiest to convert the connector on the bike using converter # 119178.
