Timbren Trailer Axles - ASR1THDS03

Highlights

  • 4" Lift Spindles: Raises deck height for max ground clearance on rough roads.
  • 2,200-lb Capacity: Handles small campers or cargo trailers with ease.
  • Independent Suspension: Each side moves separately for smoother towing.
  • AEON Rubber Springs: Absorb shock to cut bounce, sway, and rattle.
  • E-Z Lube Long Spindles: Built-in grease zerks simplify bearing upkeep.
  • No Axle Beam Design: Clears rocks and ruts by eliminating the low cross-tube.

Features to know about

More Clearance for Rough Roads: Built-In 4" Lift Spindle Raises the Deck

Rutted roads and steep driveways are easier to handle when the suspension gives you extra height. The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension uses long spindles with a built-in 4" lift to raise the trailer deck for maximum ground clearance. It eliminates the axle beam completely, so nothing hangs below the frame to drag or catch when you’re off-pavement or loading on uneven ground.

Smooth, Quiet Ride on Every Trip: Rubber Jounce and Rebound Springs Soak Up Shock

Rattling and bounce wear you out fast. This suspension uses AEON heavy-duty rubber jounce springs to absorb road shock and support the trailer’s load, while rebound springs control body roll and bottoming out. The result is a stable, quiet ride whether you’re hauling gear or running light, and it keeps your cargo from getting tossed around on rough terrain.

Independent Action for Better Handling: No Cross-Axle to Fight Your Suspension

With traditional axles, what happens on one side of the trailer affects the other. The Timbren Axle-Less design bolts directly to the frame in two separate units that work independently. Each side moves on its own, so turns feel smoother and the trailer tracks straight even over potholes or washboard surfaces.

Strong Build That Stands Up to Abuse: Heavy-Gauge Steel with Powder-Coat Finish

Off-road use demands tough parts. Each suspension arm is built from heavy-gauge steel for strength and durability, then finished in a black powder coat that resists rust and corrosion. It’s rated for a 2,200-lb capacity and built to handle the shock of rocky trails and long hauls without bending or flexing.

Easy Upkeep and Custom Fit: Grease Zerks and Universal Frame Mounting

Keeping your bearings lubed is simple with the E-Z Lube spindles and built-in grease zerks. The system fits any trailer frame width and accepts 2" x 2" steel tubing through integrated holes for crossmember support. It installs with 1/2" Grade 8 bolts torqued to 90–95 ft-lbs and gives you up to 3-3/8" of suspension travel for reliable performance mile after mile.

Labeled diagram of Timbren Axle-Less suspension parts showing jounce spring, rebound spring, control arm, and lift spindle

  • jounce spring: supports the weight of your trailer and cargo. It easily absorbs road shock and is constructed of AEON heavy-duty, hollow rubber.
  • rebound spring: delivers a smooth, stable ride - regardless of how much cargo is on the trailer. It controls the movement of the jounce spring to minimize trailer body roll, bounce, rattle, and bottoming out.
  • trailing arm with integrated hanger: attaches the suspension to the side and bottom of the trailer frame.
  • control arm: carries the spindle and the hub. It pivots on strong, long-lasting polyurethane bushings that never require lubrication.
  • E-Z Lube, 4" lift spindle: is simple to grease. If damaged, it can be removed and replaced, saving you both time and money compared to a traditional axle.
  • built-in hole: accepts 2" x 2" steel tubing (not included) to add support to your trailer's frame. The tubing sits higher than a trailer axle, providing additional ground clearance.

Note

This Axle-Less system requires crossbeam support. If your trailer frame doesn’t have a crossmember in place, you can retrofit it with one, or you can add a support by running a piece of 2" x 2" steel tubing through the square holes cut into these units. You could also add a steel reinforcement bracket to the inside of the trailer frame.

Here are some pictures of my Timbren axle installation. I used a 2000#
axle and a 3500# spindle combination. I am running a original 14" tire.
It was a moderately easy installation.

Used this on a camping trailer behind our Jeep. The suspension handled 1000 miles of washboard gravel roads and mild rocky offroading with ease. We don't drive gently and had the trailer airborne at one point. The brackets that we opted to fabricate for them were straightforward and simple to install. I especially like the ground clearance under the trailer that you gain due to the lack of a solid traditional axle. The ride quality overall was excellent, especially given where we took it. In hindsight we should have gotten the 4" travel version as it may have been able to soak up deep ruts at 40mph a bit better. Only mild complaint is that the powdercoating on the leading edges had already begun to flake off when we received the suspension. I hit it with a can of spray paint, but I would have hoped it would be more durable. Overall, I will definitely be purchasing this axle-less suspension again for my next trailer build.

Excellent, helpful customer service sold me this product, and trust me when I say it's worth the price tag. Pulled the old axle and leaf spring off a 60's era Bantam and swapped out for this with a support bar in between. Bumped up tires to 315/75r16 BFG TA/KO's to match my rig and am amazed at how much better this trailer now pulls. Empty it wad bouncing all over the place with the old axle and leaf spring setup. Now I hardly even know it's there. Was very easy to install, took a couple hours but I am happy with how it turned out. A+++ product and customer service!

I was looking for a low profile axle system for my motorcycle trailer. The primary requirement was to be able to load my motorcycle by myself which required a low-profile trailer. With the 4" drop provided by Timbren, this setup turned out great. I originally intended on using ramps but after I swapped the leaf spring axle out with the Timbren, I found I was able to ride my motorcycle on/off without the need for the ramps.

Originally, I was going to go axle-less but I found when torquing down the assembly to my frame it started to compress the aluminum rail. To take the pressure off the frame I added the 2" bar from axle to axle. Pulls smooth and effortlessly.

I've had several people comment on the trailer height with one wanting to buy the trailer from me. This person worked at the local Honda Dealership. He thought it was a great design and I would imagine he's seen a variety of trailers come through his lot.

The other option I considered was a torsion axle but I was looking for the lowest profile I could get. Therefore, cost was not a key factor. I also like the soft ride the Timbren system provides. Not sure if the torsion design would have been as smooth over bumpy roads. Regardless, I'm pleased with how this project came out.

by:

So we had a torsion axle / frame failure and these and a new subframe was our solution! Amazing product upgrade with 12" brakes and 7000lb HD Running 16" BFG ko2 tires ! These are truly bolt on if you don't have frame problems also if your running single axles on the west coast and mountains the 12" brakes are a huge upgrade!!!

by:

Timbrens work great! They make my homebuilt camper tow smooth, straight, and no bounce. Off road they give me better control and don’t make my light camper jump around on the trail. Install was straight forward, instructions were adequate and overall went pretty well. Staff at etrailer helped me pick the right bearings and provided great customer service as usual. I would recommend these to anyone looking to improve their trailers handling and towing characteristics.

Everything came really fast, quicker than we had anticipated and in one piece. The email notifications on shipping were great and accurate as well.

The only thing I would point out, if you order AKHD-655-35-EZ-K Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 3,500-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 10" Diameter - 6 on 5-1/2 it is not a set, it just one drum assembly.

by:

I mounted these axels on my off road trailer, this trailer has 37" tires (same as my jeep) tracks perfectly on the road at 60 - 70 mph, Last summer I pulled this trailer on the Rubicon trail were while on the rocks the lean angle was so extream my trailer turned over on its side, when I winched my trailer back on its wheels all the weight of the trailer was on one axel. Timbren Axle-Less trailer axels are so well built and strong nothing bent, everything stayed intact. There is no sag in these axels as well. I could not be more pleased with the Timbren axels.

by:

I installed these on a small jeep style camping trailer that I built. I plated my frame and also used the suggested two inch square tubing to tie them together. It rides very well, looks like it should be very durable, it's a simple design, simple to install, more economical than other independent systems, has less parts to go bad than other systems, I would highly recommend to any body using a trailer on rough roads!

Incredible system. Handled our Overland trek through Colorado and Moab. These axles on our 1917 Ford bed ran multiple Jeep Badge of Honor trails. The suspension handled flawlessly. Handles off camber rocks and drop offs smoothly. We ran the 4 inch lift and off road offset to fit the factory Jeep wheels.

  • What Hubs And Parking Brake Ready BRakes Go With Timbren 2,200 lb Axle-Less Suspension?
Hello Casey, thanks for reaching out. It sounds like the 2,200 lb Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR1THDS03 will be sufficient for your build. Even if the GVWR is 1,500 lbs and your water tank is full, you would still be safely under 2,200 lbs, so the suspension would work well for that. If you want to set them up with parking brake ready electric brakes, you can use the following: - Dexter Electric Trailer Brakes - Parking Brake Ready - 10" - Left/Right Hand Assemblies - 3.5K...

I just spoke with my contact at Timbren who said that if you are towing your trailer dry right now at the 1,300 lbs then that is why it is a little rough. Since the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System # ASR1THDS03 is rated for 2,200 lbs you need to put more weight in your trailer. Once you have some more load in your trailer you will start to experience the performance of the AEON progressive-rate main springs.

  • How To Determine Correct Axle Placement For Single Axle Trailer
Hey John, thanks for reaching out. The recommended placement of an axle on a single axle trailer will be determined by tongue weight. There are two formulas to determine axle placement. One formula is for trailers with a tongue weight (TW) greater than 10% of the gross trailer weight (GTW) and the other formula is for trailers with a TW less than 10% of the GTW. You can find each of these formulas pictured below. Moving the axles rearward will increase the tongue weight of the trailer,...
