How To Determine Correct Axle Placement For Single Axle Trailer

Updated 01/22/2025 | Published 01/21/2025

Question:

To whom it may concern: Im building my first trailer and Id like to use product ASR1THDS03. When positioning these brackets for installation, where is the ideal location? Ive heard that its approximately 1 inch for every foot of trailer length behind the center location. But Id like to know what that is from the professionals. Thanks in advance. Respectfully,

Hey John, thanks for reaching out. The recommended placement of an axle on a single axle trailer will be determined by tongue weight. There are two formulas to determine axle placement. One formula is for trailers with a tongue weight (TW) greater than 10% of the gross trailer weight (GTW) and the other formula is for trailers with a TW less than 10% of the GTW. You can find each of these formulas pictured below.

Moving the axles rearward will increase the tongue weight of the trailer, and placing the axles forward will decrease the tongue weight.

I hope this helps and feel free to comment below and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Jesse. Using that information, do we use the spindle center or the center of the whole assembly for our measurements? I'm thinking its the spindle center just as it would be on a regular axle, but please advise. Much obliged.

@JohnM Yes you are correct you use the center of the spindle for that measurement.
