Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

E-Z Lube-Compatible Assembly for Simple Lubrication

The grease cap on this hub-and-drum assembly is specially designed to work with your Dexter E-Z Lube axle to make lubricating bearings quick and easy. Just remove the plug on the grease cap, attach a grease gun to the zerk fitting on the end of the spindle, and inject the grease. It will flow easily to both inner and outer bearings. Not only does this make lubricating the bearings easy, but it also helps to prevent corrosion of the hub. This is because you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly Installation

Today we're going to be taking a look at and also showing you how to install the eTrailer "Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly." These are designed for use on 3500 pound easy move axles. They have a 10-inch diameter and a bolt pattern of 5 on 5 inches. Part number is AKHD-550-35-EZ-K. Now, with the kit we're going to get our hub, which is nice. We're going to have brand new races inside of here. We got a brand new area here where our magnet's going to ride, so we're going to have superior contact and a completely new braking surface, so we know when our brake's engaged, they're going to do the job they're intended to do. Also, we've got our inner bearing, we've got our outer bearing.

We've got our seal and then it's even going to come with new lug nuts, our new "EZ Lube" cap, and the dust cover that's going to fit in there and keep all the dirt, moisture and grime out of our bearings. Now, if you're beginning your installation from scratch, we want to take our old tire off, of course, and we want to get our old hub off. There are a couple different methods of how they keep the hubs on and keep our bearings in place. This one has what they call a "capture nut." This nut just slides over the end of our actual nut and that's going to be a keeper there. Some of them will have cotter pins that slide through. Regardless, we'll want to either take off our cotter pin or we can just pop this off the end there.

You can see this little tab lines up with the flat spot on the axle. You then want to remove the nut and then we also want to take off our washer. Now, these things, we want to save all of these. A lot of times with the cotter pin, you will break it, so it's not a bad idea to have one of those on hand. Now what I like to do is get all the old grease off of the spindle here, that way we're starting fresh. Now, with our bearings, we want to pack these with new grease.

There's a couple different things out there, we even have a bearing packer available on our website. I just do it by hand. We're going to use red grease for non-marine applications. I got a trailer that won't be backed into the water. You'll want to use a marine quality grease if you are using it on a boat trailer or something of that nature. Then, it's just a matter of pushing the grease in to the gap that exists between the inner race here and the outer keeper.

You can see this little gap right here where you see that red grease. We want to force that through so eventually it comes out of the top side. Now with that packed full, we can drop this right in to the top of our new hub or what would be the back side of our new hub. Since your hands are already covered with grease, it's probably a good idea to do that outer bearing now as well. Now it's time for us to take our seal. We're going to place it right here on the back of our hub. We're going to be using part number PTW83020. This is a universal seal and race tool. You could also use a 4 by 4 block of wood or some kind of piece of wood on the back side of it to get it in. You just want to be careful. We'll just drive it in until it's fully seated, just like that. Now I'm going to take a little bit more of our grease and I'm just going to put it inside of our hub here. You don't have to do this, you could do it through the EZ Lube, but this will save you a little bit of time pumping on a grease gun. We're ready to slide it right on our spindle. A little wiggle to get that seal to set properly. Now our outer bearing can be slid on, just like that. We'll put on our retaining washer. We'll take our nut, we want to thread that on. Now, at this point, I like to put my tire back on, use the lug nuts to get it secured. That way, we can set the tension or seat our bearings properly and make sure we've got them tightened down appropriately. The way we'll set our bearing pressure here or seat our bearings properly, we want to spin our tire and then we'll want to keep tightening down our nut. Then, at a point, you're going to feel it get a little tension on it. You'll feel a little bit of drag there. We're going to loosen up just ever so slightly and then we'll slide our keeper back on here. We can grab our dust cap here. Then, again, using either a little block of wood or, in this case, just using the dead blow hammer, get that seated into position all the way around. Now we'll use our grease gun. We're going to add in grease and we'll see it come up right inside of that cap. That way we'll know it's full in there. Now you see we've got a little pocket of grease that goes all the way around there. That means that the entire inside of our hub is full and it was forcing its way out. Now it's just time to cap it off. Any time we need to service our bearings, we just pull that cap off and that grease inaudible 00:06:11 is going to be right there. Now all we have to do is grab our torque wrench. We'll torque down each of our lug nuts to make sure that they're set properly. Once we've got everything torqued down, we'll be ready to start using our trailer again. Now with our tire torqued down, that's going to complete our installation of the eTrailer Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, part number AKHD-550-35-EZ-K.

Installed four sets of these hubs and drums, along with new electric brakes, as part of a total trailer refurb a year ago. Had some challenges early on with one wheel overheating, but solved it with the help of etrailer's excellent tech support. Since then everything is fine and I couldn't be happier. 739280

My original purchase was for a new weld on spindle with new drum/hub assembly with bearings for the other 3 wheels. I measured the wheel pattern wrong and by the time I had realized this I had installed everything. I reached out to etrailer for help and thanks to Hally C. she was able to remedy my issue with the right parts in about two days with little trouble at all. Thank you to etrailer for technical assistance and speedy delivery of new parts. Advice to anyone ordering hubs and drums remember the old saying about carpentry, measure twice and cut once, (in this case measure twice and order once) or you'll be like me and now own a hub/drum that's sitting on your shelf collecting dust because you don't own anything it fits (yet lol)! 674263

For an idler hub that will fit the spindles of the part # ASR1THDS03 and have the correct bolt pattern we have the # AKIHUB-550-35-K. This is a 3,500 lb trailer hub. For a hub drum we have the # AKHD-550-35-EZ-K. The...

  • Recommended Replacement 3,500 lb Axle for Carson Trailer with 88" Hub-Face and 74" Spring-Center
We do have a replacement 3,500 lb axle for your Carlson trailer as well as hubs that fit your description. The axles that we carry have an 89" hub-face and 74" spring-center measurements so since the hub-face dimensions are only 1" off of what you measured these will work well for your application. I'm pretty sure that your axle has the 89" hub-face measurement as that is extremely common (and measuring the hub-face is a little difficult) but even if our axle hub-face is 1" wider there...

  • How To Measure Bolt Pattern on Wheels or the Wheel Lugs on Hubs for Compatibility
The Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 5 on 5 # AKHD-550-35-EZ-K and the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly 5 on 4-1/2 # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K only vary in the bolt pattern for the wheels. I've attached an article to help you determine your bolt pattern. The 3500 lb axles are fairly standard in size, so the bearings and seals will most likely fit your axle. For proper fit, you will want to measure your 14 inch wheels and choose the hubs that are compatible. The most common bolt pattern is the...

  • Timbren Axle Less Kit Recommendation With Jeep Bolt Pattern, Lift, and Brake/Hubs
The Jeep wheel bolt pattern is 5 on 5 inch which we do have a way to accomplish what you are wanting. For a hub that has a 5 on 5 inch bolt pattern to fit the spindles of the Timbren axle less kit part # ASR2KHDS03 you would want the Trailer Hub part # AKHD-550-35-EZ-K. This hub includes the bearings that the Timbren is designed to fit. This setup has a 4 inch lift and the hubs have the 5 on 5 inch Jeep bolt pattern. Then for self-adjusting brake assemblies you'd want the part #...

  • Recommended Hubs and Brakes to Build Offroad Trailer with Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension
Generally, it is not recommended to use automotive tires on a trailer application, with the only exception being LT tires. Based on the information I was able to find, it looks like you're in luck because that's exactly what your BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM tires are so you should have no problem using those to build your off-road trailer. That being said, the 5 on 5 bolt pattern poses a problem since there are no hub/drum assemblies compatible with the spindles used on the Timbren...

  • Does the Demco Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly Come With the Drum?
I do have a solution for you but the answer to your question is no, the Demco Hydraulic Drum 3,500 lbs - 10" Brake Assembly # DMSB24429M is just the brake assembly without the drum. Keep in mind that when selecting a brake assembly and hubs that you make sure they will have the same weight capacity that your axle has. You will want to make sure that whichever brake assembly you choose that you get the Right Hand side as well, in this case it would be the Hydraulic Drum Brake part # DMSB24428M. I...

I've linked the page to those options. We also have kits for many of these hubs or can help you with the parts needed for fit. • Replacement Axle for Torsion Axle on Motorcycle Trailer
We do not carry standard style of torsion axles. The closest we have is the Timbren Axle Less axle setups like the part # ASR3500S05 which has a 3,500 lb capacity and would work well for you as long as the capacity is correct for your trailer. For a hub/drum to fit this wit a 5 on 5 inch bolt pattern you'd then want the part # AKHD-550-35-EZ-K. Then for brake assemblies you'd want the # AKEBRK-35L-SA and # AKEBRK-35R-SA.

  • Replacement Axle Spindle for Dexter P21-SLR with 76 Inch Spring Seats and 44649 and 68149 Bearings
I reached out to Dexter and they no longer make that axle. I can confirm based on the bearing sizes you gave that you have a 3,500 lb capacity. If you determine you just want to replace the hub, I recommend the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 3,500-lb Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 # 84546UC3 or # 84546UC3-EZ if you have the grease zerk integrated in the spindle. Since we can't match the spring seat to spring seat dimensions if you want to replace your axle I recommend...
