Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I put the new hub assembly on for my Lil' Hobo retro camper trailer. The hub assembly doesn't come with a washer and nut for the spindle, so you need to save your old ones or buy these separate if you don't have them. I put it on with new tires and wheels, upgrading from a four bolt to five bolt pattern. 617236

Ask the Experts about this etrailer Trailer Hubs and Drums

  • Trailer Hubs Based on Spindle Measurements 3,500 Pound Axles
It looks and sounds like your spindles take inner bearing # L68149 and outer bearing # L44649. These bearings indicate that the most likely size hubs you will need are for a 3,500 pound axle. For an idler hub you could use # AKIHUB-545-35-K. This one has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. If you are looking for a brake drum then you could use # AKHD-545-35-K which also has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. I have linked videos of both of these assemblies for you.

Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-545-35-K was designed to work with 13" to 17-1/2" wheels so it is not a good option for 8 inch trailer wheel # AM20028. We have a lot of hubs that fit 8 inch wheels and have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern but they use different bearings than # AKIHUB-545-35-K. If you can tell me the inner and outer bearing numbers of the hub you are replacing then I can figure out which hubs and compatible wheels will work for you. • How to Determine Correct Replacement Hub for Gator Trailer
Does your trailer use roller or sealed bearings? According to Dexter Marine, who now owns TDE, the 46201 used sealed bearings. We don't carry a hub that small that uses sealed bearings, but if you could reply and provide me with the diameter of the spindle where the bearing rides, I'd be happy to see if we offer a proper replacement. The # AKIHUB-545-35-K hub you mentioned isn't a likely fit, as it's compatible with a tapered spindle which a sealed bearing typically uses a straight spindle.

It sounds like you have inner and outer bearings # L68149 and # L44649 respectively. That's a very popular combination on a # 84 spindle but the seals are normally 1.719 inches inner diameter. I would verify that number. If this is correct there's a still a number of options that could be your correct hubs depending on whether you have drums, what bolt pattern they are, and whether you have EZ Lube spindles or not. • Difference Between EZ Lube Compatible Hubs and Regular Hubs
Some trailers are equipped with EZ Lube spindles, which have a grease fitting or zerk in the end of the spindle, and a small hole in the spindle that lets grease enter the interior of the hub and reach the bearings. This allows grease to be added to the trailer hubs, but the bearings would still need to be inspected and repacked before installation. The only difference between an EZ Lube hub and a non-EZ Lube Hub would be the grease cap. For an EZ Lube hub, the grease cap would have...
