Features to know about

Upgrade Worn or Failing Brakes: 12" Electric Drum Assemblies Restore Confident Stopping

If your trailer’s old brakes are dragging or losing bite, the etrailer 12" x 2" Electric Trailer Brakes (#AKEBRK-6) bring back smooth, consistent performance. They fit most standard hub-and-drum assemblies, including Dexter, Lippert (LCI), and AL-KO, and work with 5,200- to 7,000-lb axles. The pads are fully bonded to the shoes—no rivets—so they deliver solid braking torque without the screeching metal contact that happens when riveted linings wear down.

Built for Easy DIY Installation: Bolt-On Assemblies for One Axle

These left- and right-hand brake assemblies come preassembled and ready to mount on a standard 5-bolt brake flange. They’re designed for 14-1/2", 15", 16", and 16-1/2" wheels and need only an electric brake controller (sold separately). Once bolted up, just connect the two brake wires—either can be power or ground—and you’re ready to adjust. Mounting bolts and hardware (#BRKH12) are sold separately so you can match what fits your setup best.

Durable, Automotive-Grade Pads and Rust-Resistant Backing Plates

The friction material is the same SAE-N certified compound used in automotive drum brakes, giving long life and dependable braking torque. Each pad is tapered to reduce chatter and lockup while maintaining a smooth braking feel as it wears. Rust-resistant, e-coated backing plates fend off corrosion from moisture and road grit, so these assemblies hold up over time.

Simple Maintenance with Manual Adjustment Design

Periodic adjustment keeps these brakes performing like new, and it only takes a few minutes using the built-in star wheel. Adjuster plugs are included to protect internal components from dirt and debris while still allowing quick access when you need it. With proper setup, you get consistent braking power trip after trip.

Tested for Safety and Certified for Quality

Each assembly meets QAI, CSA, and SAE-N certification standards, confirming reliable performance under real-world conditions in both the U.S. and Canada. These brakes deliver dependable stopping power so you can tow with confidence knowing they’ve been thoroughly tested for safety and durability.

Arrived a day early. The brakes work great. Thanks Etrailer!

by:

In general the brake assemblies seem like good quality products. The installation went smooth and easy. Really a plug and play sort of thing. The reason for the lack of a 5 star rating has to do with the way the brakes were shipped. I ordered two sets and all 4 assemblies came in this super large box and all the assemblies fell to the bottom of the box and just piled up on each other during shipping. It was a mess getting them out of the box and back into proper shape. I highly suggest individual packaging during shipping. 4 assemblies in a single extra large size box is a pain do deal with plus it's rather heavy.

by:

Quick shipping, excellent online experience as well as phone/voice service. Very knowledgeable and spoke very good English,

by:

I received the product as ordered. The two day free shipping was much appreciated!!
The only complaint I have is the packaging of such heavy parts. My order included heavy brake drums and the boxes they were packed in were not quite strong enough. My suggestion is to place an additional thick piece of cardboard to the top and bottom of the box. Two of the four boxes of brake drums were worn completely through, exposing the product. Fortunately there was no damage to the drums but as bad as the boxes were damaged it could have been bad news.
Simple fix to avoid problems for the customer.
Thank you!!

Thanks for the feedback Ralph! Glad to hear the shipping was quick and everything arrived safely even though the packaging didn't really withstand the trip. We appreciate you taking the time to give us a heads-up about the packaging.

by:

As always Etrailer comes trough again and at a great price.

by:

Great affordable brakes. Adjusted them and tested them out and they work great. Using a trailer brake controller in the truck as well and have no complaints yet. Towed about 5k miles on this system so far. I saw a ton of those advertisements for wires that have heat shrink and are waterproof and you don't need to solder. Saying when you apply heat to them, it melts the solder. Tested them out and they actually work great and are waterproof.

I ordered these to replace the original brakes on my trailer after I started having problems with mine (see details below if interested). They are good quality and were easy to mount and assemble. They definitely made a difference in how well my trailer is braking. I definitely recommend these if they are what you need.

However, I will say that the shipping was delayed by about 4 days. This may not be etrailer's fault, but they use UPS and I've been having horrible luck with UPS's shipping service lately. Everything has been delayed. So just be aware that if you order with the standard ground with UPS these will most likely not arrive on time.

The second problem that I had was that I ordered a set of drum/hub combos to go with these on a separate order. After 2 days of seeing no progress on my order I had to email and call to find out that the order was delayed. There was no update from etrailer without me asking. I ended up having to cancel that order and purchase through a local supplier whom I will likely start using from now on.

To detail the braking problems, I purchased my 2008 Toy Hauler about two months ago. We've towed about 1,200 miles with it so far and I noticed from day one that the brakes weren't as responsive as they should be. As we were entering our neighborhood from our last trip my Tekonsha Prodigy 3 started flashing red and reading that there was a shortage and that I had a brake overload and that there were no brakes. This was fairly spiritic but eventually became constant. Based off of information I found from posts on this site, it seemed like it might be one of the magnets not making sufficient contact with the drum. It seems like this was the case. During my repair, I found that one of my grease seals had blown and grease had gotten into one of the brake assemblies and it looked like that entire hub/assembly/etc. had stopped working properly. After replacing the entire brake assembly, drum/hub, bearings and seals on all four wheels everything is working great! I probably only needed to replace the brake assemblies, but decided that for another $350 I would have peace of mind knowing that everything is at it's best!

Thanks etrailer for the helpful information and quality parts!

by:

They fit in my axle and adjusted easy. Time will tell on how good they perform as pre greased.

by:

Ordered complete brakes and bearings for 8 wheel 16 ton trailer. All mounted up very nicely and I am very pleased with the result. In addition to bearings and brakes I also replaced the lights and added a new 7 pin plug incl a new battery and emergency trailer brake and wirebox. I had never done any of these repairs before, but followed the tutorial videos on e-trailers site. Very happy with result and will recommend e-trailers to anyone that need trailer stuff. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

by:

Haven’t put the brakes to use yet but the quality seems to be better than manufactured quality. Easy installation.

by:

Excellent fit at installation with same performance and support afterwards...am rating this company and their products 6 Stars out of 5.

Will was the best helped me identify the best parts to convert an old 1970 axles to modern hubs and electric brake assembly’s new 6 lug wheels and tires fit perfect all bearings and parts were perfect. These folks are best ever to deal with or learn from.I was slow with this review because I was slow getting all this done It was well worth all the money and time though.

by:

The over all look of things is great but had to put an adjuster back in one after UPS evidently did some rough handling. The seals were very well packed so there was no damage to them. I have not installed them yet but if everything fits properly I will have no problem.

by:

Excellent quality and value! This is the ONLY way to replace worn out 19-year old brakes on our 40' 3-axle 5th wheel toyhauler. Everything new including drums, bearings, seals, etc.

etrailer.com shipping was free and fast. These are heavy components, but packaging was great and everything arrived undamaged. Follow up customer service is always great at etrailer as well.

Very pleased!

by:

These were exact fit, easy to replace and would definitely recommend. Definitely invest in the brake spoon tool ( bought one with my order) for adjusting these after the wheel is back on. Definitely worth it and etrailer nailed it again. In the photo, the axle on the right is the new brake assembly and the one on the left..... well that is the reason I bought four new brake assemblies!!!!! Thanks.

by:

This is my second order from Etrailer. So far, both orders arrived before the estimated delivery date and quality of products is excellent! Great communications and followup. Thank you Etrailer.

by:

Seem like quality made brake components. Hard to beat the price. The OE Lippert brakes on my trailer these replaced lasted 14 years and somewhere around 25,000 miles. If If these have a similar lifespan I will be very pleased.

by:

I would recommend your parts to anyone came fast. Brakes are still working. Great thanks for all your help.

Very good material. I did buy for my dump trailer 14 feet long, 6 to 7 tons. Easy to assemble and well mounted.

by:

Very pleased with product and timely sh ipping

by:

I just installed the brake assemblies, they look well constructed and the installation was a matter of 5 nuts and two wire crimps.

by:

Everything went back together better than expected. The brakes arrived early in the morning, and I was able to have them installed by that afternoon.

Everything is working great at this time. Just ordered two more sets to install this week.

by:

One of the brake assemblies arrived broken. I called in late on a Friday to inform you. I was told that it would not go out on Friday because it was too late, which I understand. I was also told that I would get an email to let me know that the picture I sent would be sent to the proper department and that the assembly would be shipped. I received no email and when I called Monday mid to late morning, it was apparent that nothing had been done, very disappointing. I was also told that “expedited” delivery was approved but the package still didn’t arrive until the end of the 3rd day.

by:

One of the brakes was missing the tension adjuster and spring. Fortunately I was able to use parts from the old brakes so I could finish the install as we were leaving the next day on a extended trip. I contacted etrailer and got an apology. I think a small credit on my next order would have been appropriate in this instance. Packaging was top notch.

  • How to Find Replacement Electric Drum Brakes for a Trailer
If you need to find the size of the correct replacement braking assembly for your boat trailer you will need to remove the trailer hub and measure the inside contact patch with the shoes which you can see in the attached photo. You will also want to make note of how many bolts hold the braking assembly to the axle. The most common two are the Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-35 for 3,500 lb axles with a four bolt brake mounting flange or the Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-6...

Hello Alan, thanks for reaching out. We likely will have a brake drum that will fit your trailer, but I do not have a way to accurately recommend a drum based on the info from the backing plate you provided. The numbers you provided indicate a Dexter 6,000 lb or 7,000 lb axle with a 12"x2" drum which does help to narrow it down quite a bit, but there are a few more pieces of info I will need. • What Holds A Trailer Brake Magnet In Place In A Trailer Brake Assembly
Hey Tony, The brake magnet # AKBRKR-M12 is placed on a metal arm with a spring on the back side of the magnet to push the magnet up away from anything and a clip to prevent it from popping off the arm. When the brake is energized by the brake controller the magnet will stick to the drum. As the drum spins it will pull on the magnet arm which pushes the brake shoes out to contact the drum and slow the trailer down.
