Can I Replace Just a Brake Magnet or do I Need to Replace the Assembly

Updated 12/06/2024 | Published 05/27/2020

Question:

My electric drum brake magnet was broken off and lying inside the hub. Do I need an entire new brake assembly or just the magnet and actuating arm?

While it is possible to replace just the magnet like part # Replacement Magnet Kit for 12" Electric Trailer Brake Assemblies part # AKBRKR-M12 I highly recommend replacing the entire assembly. It proves very cost effective and can save you labor later down the road. It seems when one component goes the others are quickly behind it. Replacing it all with a kit like the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 12" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies part # AKEBRK-6 is a great way to save headaches.

I don't have any information on your brake size but if you will provide the diameter and width of the assemblies and how many bolts hold it on I can give you exact replacement information.

I have also linked all of the replacement magnets for you to check out if you decide to go that route.

Hi, I have a 1971 17' 2-axle camper whose name is unknown (on the title: GERR, model: HLY). My mechanic reports it needs magnets replaced on the electric brakes. Instead of 6 studs on its 4 drums it has threaded ports for its 6 wheel bolts. Instead of the axle passing thru the CENTER of the brake assembly, the axle appears welded to a permanent backing plate 2" OFF CENTER inboard. Brake drum size is approximately 11.5" diameter, 2.25" width. Has etrailer a brake assembly for this, or will i have to replace the magnets & pads separately? Any idea who made this trailer? Cheer

@Paul Hello Paul. Your best bet is going to be to try to find parts that match the shoes. With the shoes being welded on there it sounds like it is a mobile home axle that was put on there. Mobile home axles are really only intended for a one time use, which is why they just weld the shoes on there. Your safest option would be to replace your axles (the answer that no one wants to hear).
