Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - AKHD-655-6-K Review

Today we're going to take a look at the 12-inch trailer hub and drum assembly for 6,000 pound axle with the 6 on 5 and a half bolt pattern. Now this trailer hub and drum assembly will include the bearing races and they're pre-installed: the outer race right there and the inner race right in there. Also comes with the both inner and outer bearings themselves, comes with the grease seal, comes with the grease cap, and the lug nuts. Now this drum assembly will work with both electric and hydraulic brakes as you can see in the back here. The application, it's for 6,000 pound axles, has the bolt pattern of a 6 on 5 and a half inch bolt pattern, and these are designed for 12-inch brake assemblies. That's why we call it a 12-inch hub and drum assembly, and the 12-inch is the measurement is basically inside the inside. So if we take a ruler and we put it all the way across you can see right at 12 inches for the diameter. Now the inner bearing, which is the larger of the two bearings, it's part number 2558O, has an inside diameter of 1.75 inches.

That goes right into the inner bearing race right there, fits right in there. Now I'm just showing you where they go, basically when you install these of course you will grease these up. Your bearing will go right in there. Now the grease seal, which has an overall diameter of 3.376 inches. That would be tapped in there to hold all that into place.

Then on the outer bearing, which is the smaller of the two. The outer bearing is part number 15123, and they are stamped on the bearing themselves. It has an inside diameter of 1.25 inches. That would go right into the outer bearing race, right just right there. Then the grease cap, which would have a flange diameter of 2.446 inches, that would tap in right in there to cover that up.

Hold that all in place. And then the last, they include 8 lug nuts and they are the half inch by 20 size. And the lug nuts would be used as once this is all installed on your brake assembly, on your axle, you go to put your wheel and tire up on the studs there, take your lug nuts to hold your wheel into place. And just go ahead and tighten those down to the correct torque specs for your application. But that should do it. For the review on the 12-inch trailer hub and drum assembly for 6,000 pound axle with the 6 on 5 and a half inch bolt pattern..

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Dexter Axle Hub Conversion for 14.5 Inch or 15 Inch Wheels on Equipment Trailer
  • Thanks for the information on your trailer. For your axle with brakes I recommend the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 5,200-lb and 6,000-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 12" - 6 on 5-1/2 # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K if you have the spindles with the integrated grease zerk. • The picture you sent is off a brake assembly. It looks to be a 12 inch assembly, probably a 12 x 2 inch. Hub # AKHD-655-6-K does accept 12 x 2 inch brakes. But to determine if the hub fits the spindle I would need to know the inner and outer bearing numbers stamped into the sides of the bearings. Or I would need to know the spindle measurements, see picture explaining the measurements. These measurements have to be as accurate as possible so I recommend using calipers such as # PTW80157. • How To Determine Replacement Hubs And Brakes For Boat Trailer
  • Unfortunately, just the outer bearing is not quite enough to figure out what you need for replacement hubs and bearings. For a trailer with that much weight it sounds like you have a tandem trailer. I recommend replacing the bearings and seals on all of the wheels at the same time, even if you are only replacing the brakes on one axle. If you remove the inner and outer bearing and can find the numbers, that will really help. Or you can use digital calipers like part # PTW80157 and take...

  • Replacement Hub Assembly for Dexter Hub Labeled 8-201 on Dexter P-29 Axle
  • Thanks for the information on your hub. The Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 5,200-lb Axles - 12" Diameter - 6 on 5-1/2 # 8-201-5UC3 is the direct replacement from that manufacturer. The Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 5,200-lb and 6,000-lb Axles - 12" Diameter - 6 on 5-1/2 # AKHD-655-6-K will have the same bearings but will use a slightly different grease seal. The outer diameter of the seal is the same so the hubs match but you will want to replace the seal that comes in...

  • Replacement 6k Trailer Hub/Drums and Brake Assemblies
  • We certainly have all the parts you need and I can help you pick out exactly what you need but you might try some simple troubleshooting before you replace everything. I would hate to have you spend a bunch of money only to have the same problem. Have you tried jumping the power wire of the brake assemblies to a known 12 volt power source like a car battery and then also tried jumping the ground to a known ground? The fact that both assemblies aren't wanting to work makes me think it's...

  • After Replacing Trailer Brakes the Brakes are Still Weak
  • When you installed the new brakes did you adjust them? Drum brakes require an initial adjustment and then periodic adjustment (for manual adjust brakes) to keep them at optimum braking performance. Basically you will know the brakes are adjusted properly when you hear a slight but constant drag of the brakes on the drum when the wheel is turned. To see how to manually adjust trailer brake assemblies check out the video I attached, fast-forward to the 4:35 mark of the video. I recommend...
