What Wiring do I Need to get My 2022 Toyota Highlander Ready for Redarc Tow-Pro Brake Controller?

Question:

Can I use a Tow Pro Liberty brake controller on a 2022 Toyota Highlander if I take the brake signal from the trailer lights as Redarc recommends and put in Redarc’s EPDK-001 Protection Device? I already bought the Liberty from you for another car in 2023, would just need some wire and other supplies. Thank you!

Hello Dan,

We can most definitely get you set up to use your Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty brake controller in your 2022 Toyota Highlander.

Since you were looking at the # ETBC7, I’m assuming your Highlander does not have the factory tow package. To equip your vehicle for a brake controller, you’ll first need the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # TK99FR. This is fairly simple to install, with the most challenging part being the removal of some paneling to access the connectors. I’ve attached an installation video where Ryan does a great job walking through the process.

The # ETBC7 is going to be a little bit more of a challenge as you have to run a power wire from the battery to the back, a brake wire from the front to the rear of the vehicle, and some amps along the way. Lucky for you Trevor did an install here on a 2022 Highlander, so he will also be able to walk you through the install.

Then after you get that installed you will be able to install your Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Universal Wiring Harness - Dash Knob - Proportional # RED52VR, don't forget to grab a Mounting Panel for Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller Control Knob # RED48FR to fit in one of those empty spots in your Highlander, and the Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode for Tow-Pro Brake Controllers # RED34FR if you don't have it already.

What are you looking to tow with the Highlander?

Thanks for the reply. I will be pulling my 17 ft Casita travel trailer with a WDH setup I’ve been using. The new car does already have a 4-pin trailer harness that I’ve used to connect to the ETBC-7 7-way connector from my old Highlander, and I’m reusing the breakers and most of the wiring from the old kit as well. I have been watching your video on the ‘22 HL installation for tips. Based on my homework, the parts I need are a mount for the Controller remote, enough wire to connect the red signal from the Liberty controller to tap into the brake light wire in the vehicle tow harness, where the Redarc diode is used. That order is on the way :-). And some shrink wrap connectors plus a ratchet terminal crimper so I can have a nice, tidy installation.

@DanR Hey Dan, I really like the Casita travel trailers. I love the look of them and I think they are the perfect size. I'd give you an A+ on your homework, installation should be a breeze! If you don't mind me asking, what kind of weight distribution system do you use? What do you like about it, or not like about it?

@KateF Hi there- The Casita 17 is a classy little gem with just enough room for two of us and our dog. The hardest part of installation so far was finding a way through the wire harness grommet in the firewall, which is hidden behind an unreal mass of wiring and electronics. Persistence and an old coat hanger did the trick without puncturing the grommet. My hitch is a Fastway e2 6000 lb round bar WDH with a lighter 4000 lb rated shank that I customized so the whole rig only weighs about 53lbs. Fastway makes a 4000 lb version that would also work with a smaller safety margin, but what I have could handle a bit bigger trailer if we go that route. I like the solid equalizer bar system without chains that provides simple sway control as well as WD. So far there is no downside, just a well engineered system.

@DanR I feel like the coat hanger is the most under rated tool out there! Sounds like you have a lot of patience too, always important when getting those pesky jobs done especially the ones that have a lot of wires everywhere. Thanks for the feedback on the Fastway. The Fastway and the Equal-i-zer are usually the ones I recommend due to the reason that they do not have chains, they might be a little noisier but that is because they are getting the job done. You mentioned a dog so now I have to ask what breed and the name?
