Updated 09/11/2025 | Published 09/08/2025

Question:

2025 Tacoma, 4th gen, need electric trailer brakes. No connector for brake controller. Truck came with 4 and 7 pin connectors. Toyota dealer says no help at all. Will there be a wiring kit for trailer brake controller?

There is a wiring kit for a brake controller Preston but it's not going to be a plug and play one. The 2025 Toyota Tacoma does not have a plug in brake controller port. Toyota stopped putting them in after the 2023 model.

For your Tacoma, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Universal Wiring Harness item # RED52VR. This is a proportional brake controller that activates your trailer's brakes when your Tacoma decelerates.

The reason the Tow-Pro Liberty is the best option is because of its unique installation method where the only visible portion is the control knob that's about the size of a nickel. The main unit is hidden away inside your dash to be completely out of the way and out of sight. This kit includes a universal harness to get the brake controller installed.

Additionally, we do have a custom mounting method for the control knob since you're installing it in a Toyota. You can use the Mounting Panel for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controller Control Knob item # 331-TPSI-002, in one of your empty knockout panels.

What kind of trailer do you have?

Can't say it looks straight forward. Looks like short wires. I pull a 2.5 ton rated utility trailer with compact tractor. Flat land and try to avoid heavy traffic. Not impressed with what I see on the web page, and don't like the wireless Curt. At 65 years old, not excited about taking a new truck apart to wire.

@PrestonL Yeah that's just the angle of the picture. The wires for the harness measure 20" long from the end of the connector to the end of the wiring. The most difficult part of the install is going to be finding the wire connected to the cold side of the brake switch. This wire will be around your brake pedal and will only have power going through it when you press the pedal and activate the brakes. You'll need a circuit tester like item # PTW2993.
