Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Hi there, I'm Michael with Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Trailer Axle with the Idler Hubs and EZ Grease Spindles. This is gonna be a great option for those of you who are needing to replace an axle for your trailer, or if you're building your own trailer and you're wanting to have more of a custom suspension system. This will also do a good job for that. But of course, there are lots of different lengths and weight capacities for axles, and you want to make sure you're getting the right one for your trailer. We do have lots of different options available here at, so make sure that you're getting the right one.

This is a 1 and 3 quarter inch diameter, round steel axle beam. It's got a max weight capacity of 2,000 pounds. So it is gonna do a great job for those trailers that have a 2,000 pound weight capacity. The next thing you're gonna need to consider is going to be the length, to make sure that it's gonna work with your trailer. So there's 2 different ways to measure the length.

We've got, the first one is from our spring seats here. So these are welded to our axle, so they're going to be a nice static reference point to measure from, so from the center of 1 spring seat to the center of the other, it's gonna be right at 48 inches. The other way to measure is gonna be from our hub face. So from the outside flat edge of one hub to the other, it's gonna be right at 60 inches. So again, make sure that that's gonna work for your trailer.

This does have a little bit of a bend right here in the middle. You can see, that's gonna be our camber. So that's going to ensure that even when our trailer is under load or as it's under load, it's going to ensure that our wheels are going to have a nice even road to tread contact across the whole width of the wheel. So you're not gonna have uneven tire wear. It's gonna be great for your straight line pulling and acceleration.

So everything is gonna be aligned properly. Our spindles are that EZ Grease Spindle. So they are going to have this built-in grease zerk here on the end, that's going to allow you to hook up your grease gun, just pump some extra grease in there, fill up that cavity to make sure everything is staying well lubricated in between your regular maintenance. The cap comes with this. We've got 2 different caps. One cap is a solid cap that will block that grease zerk. The other has this rubber plug on it that you can just use a flathead screwdriver or something like that to open up. And that will give you easy access to that grease zerk. So you don't have to pull the cap off each time, just pull out that plug and you'll be able to hook up your grease gun, put some fresh grease in there. The spindle itself is welded onto our axle using a patented welding process that actually allows the spindle to slide over the axle rather than just budding up against it. So it is gonna provide about a 40% stronger weld to help prevent any spindle failure. It's also going to ensure proper alignment with our axle. So everything is gonna be right in line. You can see this is welded with a straight axle or a straight orientation, so it's not going to have any drop to it whatsoever. So it is going to be right in line there with our axle. Our idler hub is a cast iron construction. So it is gonna be very sturdy and durable. It's got a hub bolt pattern of 5 on 4 and a half inches. So it is gonna work for your wheels that are 8 inches up to 12 inches. The idler hub is pre-greased. You get all your bearings, races, seals, and lug nuts included. And your bearings are already packed with grease. So it's gonna be very easy to get this installed. You're not gonna have to worry about packing that yourself. It's gonna save you a little bit of a mess and effort and just slide everything in place. Get some extra grease put in with that built-in grease zerk and you'll be ready to go. Our spring seats are welded to the underside of our axle. So it's going to allow us to mount our leaf springs in the underslung orientation. So that's going to ensure a nice, low ride height and make it easier for us to load and unload our trailer. And this does meet the CSA, QAI and SAE-N certified standards. So you can trust it is gonna hold up well, do exactly what you need it to do to support your trailer. Give you that suspension system with your leaf springs, and then give you that mounting point for your wheels and tires. This does also come with a limited lifetime warranty. So if you we're to ever have any problems with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at We're always happy to work with our customers to make sure you're getting good quality products and having a good experience. So we're always willing to talk to you, give you some expert advice if you're having issues, or if you have any problems, I would be happy to work with you on that as well. But as long as the weight capacity and length work for you, I think this is gonna be a great axle. I think you'll be very happy with it, getting it put on your trailer. So that's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with Thanks for watching..

Review from a similar etrailer Axle Beam w Hubs in Trailer Axles

Axle seems solid. "Pre-installed" bearings had to be put back in because they slid out easily when installing the hub on the axle. I also had to go out and purchase new cotter pins (both were installed to a point where removing them resulted in one breaking and not trusting the other) and dust caps were heavily dented. That said, axle came 2 days earlier so I got to fish more.

Customer Service will be reaching out.
